Thoughts:

Whew, what a month. Most of August was a grind with training. I had hoped to run under 1:30 at America’s Finest Half Marathon so running a 1:33 was fairly disappointing. But not every race can be good, and that race wasn’t anywhere as smooth as I would like. It was extremely humid, and I didn’t feel great, to begin with. I’m hoping to be closer or under that at the San Francisco half marathon this month. We will see.

As far as workouts go, many of my workouts went extremely well last month. I hit a lot of paces I haven’t seen in a while. They felt good, and on the last day of the month, I went back to the track. I personally like the track and the consistency of it.

I’ve also made a swimming friend who is much better than me. Sher recently swam a 24 second 50 free, and we’ve started swimming together. I didn’t even swim that fast in my peak collegiate prime, although I was also a distance swimmer. A combination of swimming in an outdoor pool and having friends to swim with has made it much more enjoyable for me to get back in. I foresee myself swimming more in September, (famous last words) because it’s also a good social experience.

My husband and I got a rowing machine because he really wanted that, so I’ve started rowing more. I “can only” do 10 minutes at a time, but I’ve been trying to do it a few times a week. It’s HARD!

I have caught myself feeling “bad” that I can’t get more rowing in, but there is only so much working out you can or should do at the end of the day. I would rather run followed by swimming, and I don’t need to try and balance 10 minutes or rowing into there too.

I’m hoping to do a few more races in California this month, depending, and I’m hopeful we will continue to start having more. After racing a few times, I’ve forgotten how much I do miss racing!

Goals for September:

My goals each month are always to get faster (LOL), but over the last 18 months, the lack of races has made it harder for me personally. I thrive on racing and running fast. I’m hoping to do that this fall with has smaller races. Since I have no plans to do any major marathons (or any marathons), I hope we will have smaller races come back. Sometimes it’s hard to look back and remember when a 1:30 half marathon was “easy,” but I try not to compare myself to that.

I’m also going to continue to swim more. I’ve realized how much I enjoy swimming with others, so that has been fun.
