NOKA Superfood Review

NOKA Superfood Review

I first tried NOKA Superfood Smoothies in 2023 because they looked like the type of snack I would use. I like food that can sit in a work bag, hiking pack, or car without turning into a mess, and I was curious whether a shelf-stable smoothie pouch would be filling enough to bother bringing along. Your girl is hungry!

My original testing included the Superfood Smoothies, the higher-fiber smoothie line, and NOKA’s older Superfood Nut Butter pouches. The product line has changed quite a bit since then. The standalone Superfood Nut Butter line has been discontinued, while NOKA now sells smoothie pouches in four main groups: Prebiotic Fiber, Immune Support, Brain Support, and Smoothie + Nut Butter. (NOKA FAQ)

I have not tried every newer 2026 flavor, and I am not going to pretend I have. This updated NOKA Superfood review keeps my original experience while updating the products, nutrition, price, and information that has changed since 2023.

NOKA Superfood FAQ

Does NOKA need refrigeration?

No. NOKA says unopened smoothie pouches do not need refrigeration. Once opened, consume the pouch within 24 hours.

Is NOKA vegan and gluten-free?

Yes. NOKA says its smoothies are organic, non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, and kosher.

How much protein is in a NOKA smoothie?

Most of the fruit-based smoothies currently have around 5 grams of plant protein. The two current nut butter smoothies have 6 or 7 grams, depending on flavor.

Does NOKA have added sugar?

The current NOKA products I reviewed for this update list 0 grams of added sugar.

What happened to NOKA Superfood Nut Butter?

NOKA discontinued its standalone Superfood Nut Butter line. Its current +Nut Butter collection combines smoothie ingredients with almond or peanut butter.

What is my favorite NOKA flavor?

From my original 2023 testing, Cocoa Hazelnut was my favorite, although NOKA has discontinued that product. Sweet Potato Goji was the surprise flavor that I liked more than expected.

NOKA Superfood Review

What Is NOKA?

NOKA was started by friends Ryan and Adam after a mountain bike ride when they wanted something more refreshing than the energy bars they had packed. That eventually became a line of portable organic smoothie pouches made with fruit, plant protein, flax, and other ingredients depending on the product. (NOKA About Us)

NOKA says its smoothies are organic, non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, and kosher. The company also uses upcycled fruits and vegetables in some of its products.

The biggest practical detail for me is that the pouches are shelf stable. They do not need refrigeration before opening. Once opened, NOKA recommends finishing the pouch within 24 hours.

That is a large reason I liked them in the first place. I originally used NOKA at work, on hikes, and during long car drives. I did not have to think about an ice pack or whether I had somewhere to keep it cold.

What Changed With NOKA in 2026?

NOKA has expanded quite a bit since my original 2023 review. The current smoothie lineup is divided by what has been added to the base fruit-and-protein pouch.

NOKA + Prebiotic Fiber

The current Prebiotic Fiber flavors include:

  • Blackberry Vanilla
  • Blueberry Beet
  • Cherry Acai
  • Mango Coconut
  • Strawberry Pineapple
  • Sweet Potato Goji

These use soluble tapioca fiber along with fruit, brown rice protein, and flax. Sweet Potato Goji, for example, currently has 120 calories, 5 grams of protein, 6 grams of prebiotic fiber, and no added sugar.

Sweet Potato Goji was the most unusual flavor in my original testing, and I liked it more than I expected. You don’t really find a lot of sweet potato flavors in the endurance world. Why? Potatoes are one of the best carb sources! The flavor was subtle and did not taste like someone blended a side dish.

NOKA + Immune Support

The current Immune Support line includes:

  • Super Berry
  • Strawberry Banana
  • Super Tropical

These include added nutrients such as vitamins C, D, and B12, plus zinc. Super Berry and Super Tropical also contain elderberry.

I look at these as snack foods first…Nothing is a miracle worker and I am not buying a smoothie pouch because I expect it to keep me from getting sick. I care much more about whether I like the ingredients, taste, portability, and nutrition. The “immunity” is a bonus.

NOKA + Brain Support

Brain Support is one of the newer parts of the NOKA lineup.

Current flavors are:

  • Blueberry Acai
  • Strawberry Mango

Both currently have 5 grams of plant protein, 850 mg of omega-3s from flax and flax oil, and added vitamins. The labels list 110 calories and no added sugar.

I look at these as food too. “Brain Support” is NOKA’s product category. I would choose one because I liked the flavor and nutrition rather than expecting a smoothie pouch to fix my inability to remember where I put something five minutes ago.

NOKA Smoothie + Nut Butter

This is one of the bigger changes from my 2023 NOKA review.

NOKA discontinued the standalone Superfood Nut Butter line. The current smoothie + nut butter collection has two flavors:

  • Apple Cinnamon Almond Butter
  • Strawberry Peanut Butter

The Apple Cinnamon Almond Butter pouch currently has 150 calories, 6 grams of protein, 7 grams of fat, and 4 grams of fiber. Strawberry Peanut Butter has 7 grams of plant protein.

My favorite product from my original NOKA testing was Cocoa Hazelnut. Unfortunately, that belonged to the discontinued Superfood Nut Butter collection.

If you found my old NOKA review while searching for Cocoa Hazelnut, it is no longer part of the current lineup. Please bring it back NOKA 🙁

What Do NOKA Superfood Smoothies Taste Like?

The texture of the NOKA Superfood Smoothies falls somewhere between a fruit puree pouch and a thin smoothie. It is thicker than juice but easy to eat directly from the pouch. Plus, I liked that the flavors were fairly subtle. You aren’t going to get something super sweet here.

As mentioned, the Sweet Potato Goji sounded like the flavor most likely to be weird and ended up being one of the more memorable options. My favorite product overall was the old Cocoa Hazelnut Nut Butter pouch, although you cannot buy that one anymore.

The fruit-based smoothies are easier for me to picture during a hike or as a work snack. The nut butter products are more filling, which I would choose when I wanted something closer to an actual snack rather than a quick fruit pouch. Refrigeration is not required, but I think they taste better chilled. On a hot hike, I will take the cold one.

NOKA Superfood Review

Does NOKA Need to Be Refrigerated?

No.

This is one of the better reasons to buy NOKA instead of packing a homemade smoothie.

According to the company’s current FAQ, unopened NOKA smoothies do not need refrigeration. Once you open one, NOKA recommends consuming it within 24 hours. (NOKA refrigeration FAQ)

That makes NOKA easy for work, road trips, flights, hiking, or keeping a few around when you do not know exactly when you will eat them.

I would still avoid leaving food in a Mojave Desert car all afternoon. Shelf stable does not mean I need to find out what happens when the inside of my car turns into an oven.

Is NOKA Good for Running?

I separate running snack from race fuel.

NOKA markets its smoothies for workouts and outdoor activities. The company specifically lists running, hiking, biking, and other sports among its uses.

For me, NOKA fits better before or after an easy run, during a hike, or during a lower-intensity outdoor day.

I would not use a standard NOKA pouch as a direct replacement for the higher-carbohydrate race fuel I use during hard long runs and races.

Take Sweet Potato Goji. The current pouch has 120 calories, 5 grams of protein, and 6 grams of prebiotic fiber. That is a different nutrition profile from the endurance gels I choose when I am targeting a specific carbohydrate intake during a race.

If I am racing or doing a long workout, I use fuel I have practiced with for that purpose. I have a separate guide to the best energy gels for sensitive stomachs if you are researching race fuel.

NOKA makes more sense to me as a hiking snack, travel snack, pre-run snack, or something to have afterward.

Is NOKA Good for Hiking?

This is where I liked NOKA most.

The pouches are small, do not require refrigeration, and do not leave crumbs all over a hiking pack. They also give me something different after several hours of bars, chews, and dry snacks.

I originally brought them hiking because the packaging was genuinely useful for that.

I would put NOKA closer to portable hiking snack than high-output endurance fuel.

If you like running routes and hikes, I have more trail running and hiking posts on FueledbyLOLZ, including my Bondi Beach to Coogee run.

Is NOKA Filling?

It depends on which pouch you buy.

The fruit-based Prebiotic Fiber smoothies generally have around 5 grams of protein plus fiber. The nut butter options add more fat and protein. I would not expect one 4.2-ounce pouch to replace lunch, nor is that healthy. For a midmorning work snack, hiking snack, or something between meals, the portion fits better.

Is NOKA Worth It?

A current six-pack costs $14.99 directly from NOKA, which comes out to about $2.50 per pouch. The subscription price is $13.49 for six. You can also easily buy them on Amazon.

I would buy NOKA for situations where those features are useful. Hiking and travel are the easiest examples. I am less interested in paying $2.50 for one while sitting at home next to a refrigerator full of food.

That is close to how I felt about NOKA when I originally reviewed it in 2023.

What I Like About NOKA

  • No refrigeration required before opening
  • Easy to pack for work, hiking, and travel
  • More interesting flavors than a standard fruit pouch
  • Organic and plant-based
  • Protein and fiber in the current fruit smoothies
  • No added sugar in the current products I checked
  • Several options depending on whether you want more fiber, nut butter, or added vitamins

What I Don’t Love

  • $14.99 for six adds up
  • The 4.2-ounce pouch is fairly small
  • The functional product categories can make a fruit smoothie sound more complicated than it needs to
  • My old favorite, Cocoa Hazelnut, has been discontinued
  • I would choose dedicated endurance fuel for hard racing and long workouts

NOKA Superfood Review Conclusion

My opinion from the original 2023 NOKA review has not changed much. I like the portability and the flavors, especially for hiking, travel, work, or times when I want something I can throw into a bag.

The product line has changed enough that the old review needed an update. NOKA is now centered around smoothie pouches with Prebiotic Fiber, Immune Support, Brain Support, and Nut Butter options. The standalone Superfood Nut Butter line I originally tested is gone. I miss those. 🙁
