ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris Review

ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris Review

The ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris has received a HUGE update this year. For the past couple of years, the Metaspeed Sky has been the frontrunner of ASICS carbon-plated footwear. This year, the Metaspeed Sky and Edge Paris are now one of the lightest super shoes available. they’ve both become fast, and I mean fast fast. I need to fully try the Metaspeed Sky Paris before finishing up a shoe review there. Before trying the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris, I had a few questions:

  • Has the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris been updated? Yes, it’s going to fit and feel completely different.
  • Will the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris rip my feet apart? In the original Edge, I couldn’t run up and down hills because the upper would rip the skin off my feet. But it’s better than ever.
  • Is the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris good? I think so, and it’s definitely the best version of this shoe ASICS has put out.

I will say, it annoys me ASICS has given the shoes update names like “Paris.” Yes, the Paris Olympics, but I am one who enjoys the standard numbering system. It makes it easy to remember: have I tried 1, 2, or 3. Separately, a few ASICS athletes, including Sara Hall, have said this updated version of the Edge is their favorite yet. She ended up racing the Olympic Trials in it.

ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris Fit:

The Metaspeed Edge Paris upper now features “Motionwrap 2.0.” I’m happy to report it’s not like the previous uppers that would rip your feet apart. I think the combination of the upper, plus the shoe being generally narrow, would make it very unenjoyable for courses with hills.

The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet, and I’ve found the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris to mostly do that. I haven’t had any major issues, and that’s because ASICS has finally adjusted their Metaspeed series to be more true to size.

Other details include the adjustable ribbed laces and thin and the non-gusseted tongue. I don’t really prefer a non-gusseted tongue because I would rather it not move, but you can run with it sockless if you prefer.

In running shoes, I generally wear between a size 10-11 wide. I found the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris to fit well. I can’t really say that about previous versions. I would have needed a size 12, but that was too long and yet still too narrow. So there is a lot to take away from this review considering updates, but consider it finally fits more true to size.

ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris Ride:

The Metaspeed Edge Paris’s midsole features an FF Turbo+ PEBA midsole, coupled with a rocker geometry and plate that work in tandem to deliver a bouncy, rockered ride. This innovation propels the shoe to the forefront of super shoe technology, offering an incredibly fast and responsive experience. The updated midsole and adjusted stack height change the ride and feel of the shoe…a lot. If you are looking for a super shoe that feels almost like a racing flat from 2016, this is a good option.

The ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris is designed for speed, and that is exactly what I use it for. There is no need to use it for easy runs because it would first feel harsh, and second, wear out fast. Compared to other carbon-plated footwear, the Metaspeed Edge Paris is much flatter. You don’t feel that huge spring that many other carbon-plated shoes have, but it’s less aggressive on the hamstrings, so you run more naturally. If you’re someone who runs on their toes or midfoot, you may really appreciate the Metaspeed Edge Paris. The moment I started running in the ASICS Metaspeed Edge, I could feel the forefoot spring and that is something I’ve rarely felt in other racing shoes (mostly the heel). There is a noticeable bounce in the forefoot and I have really enjoyed running in it.

As far as racing, I think you can definitely run a marathon in it (Sara Hall did), but it’s probably good to work into them because they are more harsh and aggressive than other carbon-plated shoes. For me, I am thinking it will fall into a half marathon and below racer, although never say never. I mean just 5 years ago, we were out here racing marathons in 6 ounce shoes. (Why does that feel like a lifetime ago?)

Outsole:

ASICS is well-known for providing excellent traction, and the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris is no different. The ASICS Grip outsole of the Metaspeed Edge Paris excels in providing reliable traction on both dry and wet roads, but it’s not a great shoe for trails (obviously no road carbon plated shoe is made for the trails). I’ve used them in almost all types of weather and haven’t had any issues sliding around. If I was wanting a carbon-plated shoe in torrential rain, this would be a great choice.

As far as durability, I think the Metaspeed Edge Paris will last about the same as other carbon-plated models, around 100-150 miles.

ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris Conclusion:

The Metaspeed Edge Paris is definitely the best version yet. With its lightweight, innovative midsole, and updated design, it’s very different from previous versions. I am excited ASICS has added such a significant update to this shoe.

Who should buy the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris? If you are looking for a fast carbon-plated shoe and favor your midfoot or forefoot, or have a high cadence, it’s a great option.

Who should not buy the ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris? If you favor your heel or have a longer stride, the Metaspeed Sky is going to be a better option for your stride.
