The FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX is…a very long name LOL. I don’t review a ton of crossover “trail meets lifestyle” shoes, mostly because a lot of them don’t really do either thing well. They look good on Instagram, but once you actually try to use them on a trail or walk more than a few miles, they fall apart quickly.
That’s why I was curious about the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX. Merrell knows how to build trail shoes, and the Chameleon line has been around long enough that it’s not just some random fashion collab. At the same time, FP Movement clearly pushed this into more of an everyday, wearable direction. This is the first thing I’ve ever owned from Free People so that’s fun.
Before trying the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX, I had a few questions:
Is the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX waterproof?
Yes, the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX uses a GORE-TEX waterproof membrane. That makes it a better option for wet sidewalks, damp trails, rainy travel days, and light hiking when you do not want your feet soaked immediately. Like most waterproof shoes, it will feel warmer than a fully breathable mesh sneaker.
Is the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm good for hiking?
The FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX is good for easier hikes, wet trails, dirt paths, and casual outdoor use. It has a rubber outsole, TPU heel counter, FloatMax foam, and a protective upper, so it is more trail-ready than a regular fashion sneaker. I would not use it as my first choice for technical mountain hiking or long, rocky days.
Can you wear the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm every day?
Yes, and that is where this shoe makes the most sense. It has enough outdoor function to handle weather and uneven ground, but it does not look like a full hiking shoe. For travel, errands, casual walks, and wet-weather days, it feels more useful than a sneaker you are scared to get dirty.
Is the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm worth $180?
It depends on how much you value waterproofing and the FP Movement styling. At $180, it costs more than many casual sneakers, but it also has GORE-TEX, FloatMax foam, a rubber outsole, and Merrell trail heritage. If you want one shoe for wet days, casual hiking, and everyday wear, the price makes more sense.
Is the FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm a running shoe?
No, I would not treat this as a running shoe. It is a waterproof outdoor sneaker with trail influence. It works for walking, hiking, and lifestyle use, but it is not built like a road running shoe or trail running shoe.
Now, let’s get into an honest FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX shoe review.
Quick Facts
- Weight: 14.28 oz (405g) per shoe
- Price: $180
- Category: Trail / Lifestyle hybrid
FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX Upper and Fit
The upper is a mix of textile and TPU with a GORE-TEX membrane underneath. It feels more structured than a typical casual sneaker, especially through the heel with the molded TPU counter. That added structure helps keep things stable when you’re not just walking on flat pavement.
The toggle lace system is something you either like or don’t. It makes getting the shoe on and off easy, and for casual wear it’s convenient. On uneven terrain, I noticed it doesn’t give quite the same locked-in feel as traditional laces. I do appreciate that it’s not tight though and it holds well enough for walking and light trails.
Fit-wise, it leans more toward a standard width. Not overly roomy, not super narrow. If you’re between sizes, I’d pay attention there because the upper doesn’t have a ton of stretch. I wear between a womens size 10-11 wide athletic shoe and the size 11 fits the best. The toggle lace system does mean it doesn’t fit super tight so if your feet are narrow you may struggling with the fitting.
The GORE-TEX layer keeps water out, but it also holds heat in. That tradeoff is noticeable if you’re somewhere warm (like me). Some GORE-TEX layers are very unbreathable but that isn’t the case here…it’s still less breathable than a regular upper but not crazy. GORE-TEX is always nice to keep the water out. If you go swimming in the shoe your feet will get wet, but if you are out in the rain these are good option.
FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX Midsole
Merrell uses their FloatMax foam, which is softer than older Merrell models that felt almost rigid underfoot. This has more give, and for walking or being on your feet for a while. It’s not a high-stack, super soft ride like a modern running shoe. It sits closer to the ground and feels more controlled. That works in its favor on dirt paths and uneven surfaces, where too much softness can feel unstable.
For everyday use, the midsole hits a middle ground. It’s comfortable enough for longer walks or travel days, but still firm enough that it doesn’t feel mushy. I’ve used it on a few walks and shorter hikes and I’ve found that it is one of the more firm shoes that exist right now.
Outsole
The outsole is rubber with enough grip for dirt, gravel, and wet pavement. It’s not aggressive like a dedicated trail shoe, but it doesn’t feel like a flat sneaker either. This is a good option if you are looking for something cute but has great traction.
On dry trails and basic terrain, it feels secure. On anything steep, loose, or rocky, I would still want something more hiking or trail running built. This sits firmly in the “light trail” category. Now make no mistake, this is much better than using a road shoe or shoe with no traction.
Where Does The FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX Fits in My Rotation
It fits more into that in-between space where you want something fashionable but aren’t going on a fitness forward hike/run.
Travel days, walking around new places, short hikes, or days where the weather isn’t great and you don’t want to deal with wet shoes.
It’s also one of the few shoes in that category that doesn’t look overly bulky or technical, which makes it easier to wear outside of a trail setting.

FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX Conclusion
The FP Movement x Merrell Cham Storm GORE-TEX is a fun and fashion forward shoe…and really how many of those exist?
It’s a waterproof, trail-capable sneaker that works best when your day includes a mix of surfaces and conditions. At $180, it’s not something I’d buy for occasional use. But if you want one pair that can handle wet weather, light trails, and everyday wear, this is a practical option. Is it one of my cutest athletic shoes? You know it.
