The amount of excitement I had to try the ASICS Superblast 2 was nearly unmatched. The original Superblast was my favorite shoe, and I went through six pairs (I truly cannot remember the last time I liked a shoe enough to go through six pairs!). I was nervous but excited to try the new Superblast 2.
The ASICS Superblast 2 is the latest version of ASICS’ popular max-cushioned trainer, known for its versatility. With updates to the upper and outsole, it continues to be a top choice for long-distance runners seeking comfort and performance. The new version has gained a little weight, but the ride remains largely the same, making it a reliable pick for daily training. Just what I wanted!
Before trying the ASICS Superblast 2, I had a few questions:
- Is the ASICS Superblast 2 similar to the first version?
Yes. It has seen some updates and minor changes, but the ride is largely the same. - Does the ASICS Superblast 2 fit true to size?
YES! Many find ASICS as a brand to run long and narrow, but the Superblast 2 fits fairly true to size. - Why are Superblasts sold out?
The original version is discontinued, and the new version was highly anticipated. It was hard to get your hands on it initially, but as of September 2024, there are now plenty of the new version available. - Can you use the ASICS Superblast 2 for a marathon?
Yes, but keep in mind the massive stack height and heel cushion technically make it illegal for elite competition. If you’re planning to win a race, consider something else to avoid disqualification. However, the huge cushioning helps with recovery after long runs!

ASICS Superblast 2 Upper and Fit
The ASICS Superblast 2 features an improved upper that enhances breathability and comfort. The new mesh material allows for better airflow, especially around the toe box, keeping your feet cool on long runs. Thank goodness! While the Mojave Desert summer is winding down, I’m happy for uppers that breathe well. No one has time for sweaty feet!
The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet, and that’s exactly how the ASICS Superblast 2 feels. I don’t experience any hot spots or issues. Some might find the heel counter a bit high, but I haven’t had any issues with rubbing.
The upper fits true to size, with a snug fit that caters to narrow, low-volume feet. The semi-gusseted tongue stays in place during runs, providing excellent lockdown. I typically wear between a women’s size 10-11 wide in running shoes and found size 11 to fit perfectly. I can’t recall a time I’ve worn anything other than a size 11 in ASICS running shoes.
ASICS Superblast 2 Ride
The midsole is where the magic happens, right? The Superblast 2 midsole maintains the highly cushioned feel of the original, thanks to a combination of FF Turbo+ foam and FF Blast+ Eco foam. This creates a stable, responsive ride that’s ideal for long runs and recovery days. The shoe’s high stack height gives it a super-cushioned feel without the need for a carbon plate, which is rare for shoes with this much midsole foam.
The ride is medium-firm, providing just the right balance for various paces. While the cushioning is generous, it might not give you the energy return you’d expect at faster paces. If you’ve never run in the Superblast, you’ll find it to be one of the most high cushioned but responsive super trainers. If you’re already a Superblast fan, you’ll find the second version to be similar to the first. I can’t really notice a difference when I am running.
Outsole
One of the most significant updates in the ASICS Superblast 2 is its improved outsole. ASICS added ridges to the rubber lugs, increasing traction and grip on both wet and dry surfaces. The outsole is also designed to prevent stones from getting stuck—something many runners faced with the first version. I was in that category, and nothing is more annoying than hearing a rock go clink clink clink in your running shoe! I’ve used the Superblast 2 on easy sandy trails and in inclement weather, and it handles beautifully every time.
Durability is another strength of the outsole, showing minimal wear even after heavy mileage. I’ve already logged about 100 miles in my ASICS Superblast 2, and I can tell they’ll easily last the full 400 miles. I’ll likely buy another pair when these are done.
ASICS Superblast 2 Conclusion
The ASICS Superblast 2 is a versatile, max-cushioned trainer that performs well across a range of paces. It’s especially suited for long-distance running, thanks to its stable and cushioned ride. While the updates in version 2 aren’t groundbreaking, they improve comfort and traction. I didn’t mind, because I already loved the original version!
