November Training: Injured then not injured

Lever Running Device

November was supposed to be my highest mileage month before the California International Marathon. But it wasn’t, and I’m not running the marathon. As hard as it was coming to terms with that, I have, and I’m okay with it. I am looking forward to starting training for the Los Angeles marathon. Are you looking for a Los Angeles discount code? Anyway, onto training:

Miles run: 212
Range of Paces: 6:59-13:30-untimed
Shortest run: 2 miles
Longest run: 12 miles
Races:
Antelope Valley Turkey Trot 5k
Swimming: 29.8 miles

Thoughts:

A lot of the miles were using the Lever, which reduces body weight. Would I have been able to run that many miles without the Lever? No, absolutely not. Coming back from injury, my miles have been a lot slower than previous coming-back-from-injury stories. The majority of my miles have been well over a 10-minute pace and I’ve taken a lot of walk breaks. It’s just what feels right to me, and there is no need to reinjure myself for no reason.

I had no goals for the Antelope Valley Turkey Trot, so I was surprised when I averaged under a 7:10 pace for a 5k, especially since most of my miles recently have been between 10-12 minute miles. Since then, I’ve added a couple of speed workouts but nothing crazy. I am trying to focus on shorter and faster workouts for the next month while I gain some sort of speed. Then start long runs for the Los Angeles Marathon.

Other than that, injury recovery has gone well. I don’t have any pain in the hip anymore. Although, I haven’t pushed it to long distances or too hard workouts so TBD how it responds there.

I never really got an official diagnosis of the hip either. They assumed I had a bunch of muscles locked up and with PT and a few massages, it got better. Since it was in the heart of marathon training, I missed 3 long runs and it wouldn’t have been smart to run CIM. Plus, even running now I would have likely reinjured myself or injured myself with something else.

As far as swimming, since I was injured with running, I swam more. It didn’t hurt and it felt good to get in the pool, especially when I could swim outdoors.

TLDR; it was a month of running very easy and just coming out of the injury hole.
