Skratch Sport Hydration Review

As I continued my quest to try new hydration products, I stumbled upon Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix. I was looking forward to trying something with a less sweet flavor that sits in your stomach better than many hydration products. Plus, I’ve already tried several things from Skratch Labs, including:

Skratch has made hydration products for a while, but they’ve recently updated their formula. The Skratch Sport Hydration now has 10% more sodium.

About Skratch Labs:

According to the website: “Skratch labs makes sports nutrition designed to help you perform better without offending your gut or your taste buds because they use real food, starting from scratch.”

Skratch Labs began in professional cycling. While working as a sports scientist and coach, Dr. Allen Lim started to make his training food and sports drinks from scratch. He was tired of the artificial ingredients that made many cyclists sick to their stomachs.

His first creation was the “secret drink mix.” He also began diluting sports drinks to lower the sugar concentration while adding extra salt and electrolytes. His “secret drink mix” used a recipe with less sugar, more sodium, and no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors. It even used real fruit!

As word got out about the “secret drink mix,” it was clear that there was a demand for it. To meet the demand, Dr. Allen Lim put together a team and created the company Skratch Labs.

About the Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix:

The Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix replaced electrolytes and provided energy without creating stomach issues. It was originally designed for elite athletes when many overly sweet drinks made them sick. The result is a sports drink with only 4g of sugar per 100 ml and a glucose and fructose ratio optimized for faster absorption. It also has an electrolyte profile that matches what is lost in sweat. One serving of Skratch Sport Hydration Mix contains 80 calories, 20g carbohydrate, and 380mg sodium.

Did you know most people lose 800 mg sodium, 80 mg potassium, 100 mg calcium, and 80 mg of magnesium per liter of sweat?

My Experience with Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix:

I decided to first try Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix on a short hike. I wanted to make sure it handled well in my stomach before trying it on more rigorous activities. When I mixed it into a cup, it was an opaque color. One thing I’ve learned about hydration lately is you never know what color that water will turn when you mix it. Some drinks have been bright orange or purple; others are opaque. It’s a fun surprise everytime. Anyway, using it for the hike, I felt fine and had more energy towards the end. It can’t be understated how diluted the flavors taste. If you are looking for a “super sweet” drink mix, this isn’t for you.

Since it sat well in nonstrenuous workouts, I decided to try it while running. I definitely noticed a difference, and my stomach appreciated the flavor. It can definitely be used for pretty much any workout, and I’ve enjoyed using it for running, swimming, and hiking.  As someone who thrives on a hydration product with calories, I appreciate Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix.

Taste:

Lemon Lime: I’ve said before, but lemon-lime anything can be risky. I’ve found some brands too much lemon, and it becomes stuck in your throat. I like the Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix lemon-lime because it’s a very subtle but sweet flavor. It’s easy to consume.

Fruit Punch: The Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix fruit punch is my favorite flavor, but truthfully, fruit punch is almost always my favorite flavor. It tastes like a diluted and less sweet fruit punch.

Strawberry Lemonade: This was a fun flavor. Like the lemon-lime, you don’t feel as though the lemonade sits in your throat.

Orange: I actually expected the orange to be my least favorite Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix, but I found it to be one of my favorites. It tastes slightly more sweet to me than the rest.

I do enjoy all of the Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix flavors, and there aren’t any that I wouldn’t consume again. The muted flavors allow most people to drink on an empty stomach without having issues.

Cost: $1.95 for one, 20 for $19.95 or 60 for $49.95

Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix is actually one of the cheaper hydration products out there. For that, and the fact that it works, it’s become one of my more favorite hydration products.

Difference Between the Skratch Labs Hyper Hydration and Sport Hydration:

The Hyper Hydration is designed for those seriously rigorous events like racing or long hikes. The hyper hydration also has more salt. The Sport Hydration is appropriate for intense but not “all activities,” where the Hyper Hydration is designed for intense efforts that there is no other way to get your electrolytes. (I use the hyper for racing and running in the summer in the Mojave desert).

Difference Between the Skratch Labs Wellness Hydration and Sport Hydration:

The Wellness Hydration is designed to hydrate for the same activities as the Sport Hydration. The Wellness Hydration does use ORS, which means you’ll get fuel faster. I don’t notice “a lot of difference” between the two, but I appreciate that Sport Hydration comes in more flavors.

Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix Conclusion:

If you are looking for a less sweet hydration product, the Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix is a great option. While it has flavor, it’s not overly sweet, which makes it good for those who have sensitive stomachs. Plus, as far as hydration products go, it’s one of the cheaper options!
