I was curious about the On Cloudsurfer 3 because the Cloudsurfer line has changed a lot in just a few versions. The original modern On Cloudsurfer was one of the first On shoes where I remember thinking: okay, On is making running shoes that feel completely different from the firm CloudTec shoes I remembered years ago.
Then came the On Cloudsurfer 2, which went firmer. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t the soft daily trainer I expected from a shoe called the Cloudsurfer. I ended up liking it more for shorter daily runs where I might pick up the pace.
Now we have the On Cloudsurfer 3, and On has changed the foam again. The big update is SURREAL, On’s new superfoam, paired with CloudTec Phase. On says the combination creates more impact absorption than SURREAL foam by itself and gives the Cloudsurfer 3 a softer, smoother ride. It is the first shoe getting the new foam, and On has already said SURREAL will move into more of its performance line. On announced the technology here.
Let’s get into an honest Cloudsurfer 3 Review.

On Cloudsurfer 3 Upper and Fit
The upper is engineered mesh with reinforcement through areas where you want a little more structure. On has also updated the heel counter with a 3D-printed design. The Cloudsurfer 2 already fit me better than several older On shoes. In running shoes, I tend to wear between a women’s size 10 and 11 wide, and I wore an 11 in the Cloudsurfer 2. I would begin with your normal On size. I haven’t had any issues with fit.
The Cloudsurfer uses Evolved Warp Knit in their upper which is comfortable and breathable. Despite it being September at the time of writing, it’s still hot in the Mojave Desert and I need shoes that breathe well…the Cloudsurfer 3 upper does just that.
One thing I appreciate about the newer generation of On is that the shoes don’t all fit super narrow anymore. The On Cloudmonster 3 is another example. Neither is what I would call an exceptionally wide shoe, although they are much less restrictive than some of the Ons I remember from years ago.
In all, the upper and fit of the Cloudsurfer 3 fits well and I don’t think about…what more do you need or want in a running shoe? Really nothing.
On Cloudsurfer 3 Ride
SURREAL replaces the Helion setup used in the Cloudsurfer 2. The brand debuted SURREAL with the Cloudsurfer 3 and has called it a core technology that will eventually sit alongside Helion and Helion HF across the running line.
The CloudTec Phase cavities remain underneath. Instead of the old individual Cloud pods that could feel clunky, CloudTec Phase compresses progressively as you move through your stride. On uses computer modeling to shape the cavities and control how they collapse. If you ran in the Cloudsurfer 2 and wished it had more softness, version 3 is heading back in that direction. What has surprised me is that the Cloudsurfer 3 has more cushioning underfoot and yet somehow still very responsive. I’ve found it fairly easy to pick up the pace.
It is still a daily trainer. I wouldn’t buy it specifically for intervals or a hard tempo run, especially with the faster options On has now. For normal daily mileage, easy runs, and days when I don’t want a huge shoe underneath me, the Cloudsurfer 3 fits much better into what I originally expected from this line.
On Cloudsurfer 3 Outsole
On uses rubber across the higher-contact sections of the outsole while leaving plenty of exposed CloudTec Phase geometry. My forever complaint with On is rocks getting stuck underneath. If you have run in enough On shoes, you know exactly what I mean. You hear the clink, clink clink for miles…but the newer Cloudsurfers have gotten better about that compared with much older On models.
I would still keep the Cloudsurfer 3 mainly on roads. Dirt roads and smooth desert paths are fine, although there are better choices if a large portion of your running is on trails. The rubber coverage is aimed at pavement, and the CloudTec cavities are still capable of grabbing the occasional rock.
I’ve never had an On shoe that wasn’t durable and I expect the On Cloudsurfer 3 to last over 400 miles. I currently have about 100 miles on the Cloudsurfer 3 with no signs of slowing down.
Where Does the On Cloudsurfer 3 Fit in My Rotation?
The Cloudsurfer 3 is the normal daily-run shoe in On’s lineup. It is a shoe that can take the bulk of your boring, easy miles. If I want more cushioning for easy or longer miles, I would choose the On Cloudmonster 3. If I want a faster shoe, I would move into one of On’s performance options.
Running shoes have become unbelievably specialized in 2026, which I talked about in my Best Running Shoes in 2026 guide. Sometimes I just want a daily trainer and the Cloudsurfer 3 fills that job. Social media rarely hypes the daily run shoe because often they are boring, workhorses. The On Cloudsurfer 3 is a fun daily run shoe.
On Cloudsurfer 3 vs On Cloudsurfer 2
The On Cloudsurfer 3 is a big update and the biggest difference is easy: SURREAL versus Helion.
The Cloudsurfer 2 got firmer, and I know some runners liked that because it gave the shoe more versatility at quicker paces. I didn’t think it matched what many people were expecting when they bought a Cloudsurfer.
The Cloudsurfer 3 moves the shoe back toward cushioning. It keeps CloudTec Phase, changes the foam, updates the upper, and current launch specifications lower the drop from the Cloudsurfer 2’s 9 mm to around 8 mm.
Who Should Buy the On Cloudsurfer 3?
- You want a softer neutral daily trainer
Who Should Not Buy the On Cloudsurfer 3?
- Skip it if you want a dedicated workout shoe, prefer firm daily trainers, or want a max-cushion shoe for nearly every run.
On Cloudsurfer 3 Conclusion
I liked parts of version 2, especially when I wanted to run a little faster, but I never thought its firmer ride fit the Cloudsurfer name particularly well. SURREAL changes that and gives On another foam to play with beyond Helion. At $170, it is expensive for a daily trainer, although that is where a lot of premium trainers are heading now.
If you liked the original modern Cloudsurfer and weren’t as excited about the firmer second version, the Cloudsurfer 3 is the version I would look at.
