I was excited to try the Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL. I spend a lot of time running, but I have gotten much better about doing things besides running. Between Pilates, mobility, stretching, and the occasional yoga class, having a good mat is important.
The Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL caught my attention because it is massive. At 78 inches long and 34 inches wide, it gives you considerably more room than a standard yoga mat, which is nice if you are taller or move around a lot during workouts.
It also combines a microfiber top with a natural rubber base, creating a yoga mat that can handle sweat without needing a separate towel over the top. That makes the Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL especially geared toward hot yoga and sweatier workouts.
Let’s get into the Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL review.

Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL Size
A standard yoga mat is typically much narrower, and even a few extra inches can change how cramped a floor workout feels. The Combo Yoga Mat XL measures 78 by 34 inches, giving you a lot more room for wide poses, stretching, strength work, Pilates, or whatever floor workout you decided you were going to do instead of running another five miles.
At 5’8″, I do not need an extra-long mat simply to fit my body, but I like having more space. I am rarely doing a workout where my arms and legs remain perfectly lined up on a standard mat.
That larger footprint comes with an obvious downside. The Combo Yoga Mat XL weighs 8.4 pounds. It would be a challenge to bring this into a yoga or pilates studio, but for home workouts, the larger dimensions are one of the best parts.
Microfiber Surface and Natural Rubber Base
The Combo Yoga Mat XL uses a recycled microfiber top bonded to a natural rubber base. Hugger Mugger says the design is printed with water-based inks. The microfiber surface is quite different from the tackier texture found on many traditional yoga mats. It has more of a soft, fabric-like finish.
The surface is designed to gain traction as moisture increases. If you do hot yoga or sweat heavily during workouts, that is where this construction performs best. Hugger Mugger markets the Combo line specifically toward sweaty practices and says the microfiber surface gains traction with moisture. It also means you do not need to put a separate yoga towel over your mat. A larger mat is especially nice for runners because mobility, stretching, and Pilates often take you farther outside the narrow footprint of a traditional yoga mat.
Cushioning and Thickness
At 3.5 mm thick, the Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL sits in a middle range rather than feeling like a heavily padded exercise mat. There is enough material underneath you for yoga, Pilates, mobility, and general floor exercises. Very thick mats can feel comfortable while kneeling but less stable when you are standing on one leg. Very thin mats can make your knees question every life choice that brought you there. The Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL sits kind of in the middle and I’ve been really happy with both the cushioning and thickness.
But what about the weight? The natural rubber base also adds density. Combined with the larger dimensions, it helps explain why the mat weighs 8.4 pounds.
Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL for Hot Yoga
Traditional mats can become slippery when sweat starts accumulating. The Combo design puts the microfiber towel layer directly on the mat. Hugger Mugger says the microfiber surface becomes more secure as it gets damp, making it designed specifically for sweaty practices.
That also makes the mat a good option for workouts beyond yoga. Pilates, stretching, strength, and mobility all benefit from having more room, particularly if your workout moves beyond traditional yoga poses.
For a very dry restorative session, someone who prefers a tacky rubber texture may prefer another type of mat. For hot yoga and sweaty workouts, the microfiber surface has a more specific purpose.
Cleaning the Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL
Sweaty yoga mats can get gross fairly fast, especially when the surface is designed to absorb moisture. Hugger Mugger recommends hand washing the Combo Yoga Mat XL with mild soap to extend its lifespan. It can also go into a washing machine on a gentle cycle as long as the machine does not have a center agitator.
After washing, the mat should hang dry away from direct sunlight. Hugger Mugger also recommends rolling it with the patterned side facing outward. The company’s yoga mat care guide recommends regular cleaning, complete air drying before storage, and avoiding harsh chemicals that can damage the materials.
Being able to machine wash the Combo XL is convenient, although fitting a 78-by-34-inch rubber-backed mat into a smaller washing machine could become a workout of its own.

Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL Conclusion
The Hugger Mugger Combo Yoga Mat XL is made for someone who wants more room than a standard yoga mat provides and does not need their mat to be especially portable.
The 78-by-34-inch dimensions give you plenty of space for yoga, Pilates, stretching, mobility, and strength sessions without constantly repositioning yourself. The recycled microfiber surface is particularly suited to hot yoga and sweaty workouts, while the natural rubber base adds cushioning without turning the mat into a thick exercise pad.
At $138, it costs considerably more than a basic yoga mat. The larger dimensions, natural rubber construction, recycled microfiber surface, and combined mat-and-towel design account for much of that price.
