Peggy Sue’s Diner Review (Yermo, Ca)

Peggy Sue's Diner Review

It’s only taken me four years to get to Peggy Sue’s Diner in Yermo, California. If you’ve ever driven I-15 between Southern California and Las Vegas, you already know Peggy Sue’s. Even if you’ve never stopped, you’ve seen the signs and had the same conversation everyone has at least once.

Do we stop?
Is it worth it?

Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner is in Yermo, about 10 miles north of Barstow, right off the freeway. It exists almost entirely for road trips. You stop because you’re tired of driving, tired of snacks, and want to sit down and eat something that feels like an actual meal before getting back in the car.

Are diner reviews back? Maybe. It’s been about two years since I posted my last one. Diners are harder to find in California than you’d expect, which is probably why I haven’t written about one in a while.

Peggy Sue’s Diner Atmosphere

This is where Peggy Sue’s shines.

It fully commits to being a roadside diner. Booths. Counter seating. Retro decor. A smaller menu. Nothing feels overthought, and that’s exactly why it works.

I don’t come here expecting to be blown away. I come here expecting the basics to be done right. Something hot and filling. Especially when you’re halfway through a desert drive and it feels like you’ve been staring at the same rock for the last hour.

Peggy Sue’s feels like it’s been doing the same thing for years and never felt the need to mess with it. You’re not rushed. You sit, you eat, relax from the drive, and then you keep going. If you’ve ever driven this corridor during peak rush hour, you know how miserable it is and stops are welcome.

The thing everyone talks about: the dinosaurs

Yes, there are dinosaurs. A lot of them.

Out back is Diner-saur Park, which is a free outdoor area with giant metal dinosaurs, a massive King Kong statue, and ponds with turtles and fish. It’s weird but awesome, because you know you take a short walk break.

I didn’t get a chance to walk around this time because it was late and completely dark, but even knowing it’s there adds something to the stop.

The diner-saur park is what turns Peggy Sue’s into more than just a place to eat. You can grab food and then walk around. Or walk around while you’re waiting for your table. If you’re traveling with kids, this is huge. If you’re traveling with adults, it’s still nice to get out, stretch, and take a photo that only makes sense because you’re in the middle of the desert.

One more thing you should know before you go: in the women’s bathroom, there is a male mannequin standing at the urinal. Did it absolutely scare me and make me think I walked into the wrong restroom? Yes. So now you’re warned.

Seriously, I ran out the first time

Peggy Sue’s Diner Food

The Peggy Sue Diner menu is exactly what you expect from a diner. Burgers. Fries. Sandwiches. Comfort food. Breakfast all day. Milkshakes. Desserts. Nothing complicated. Nothing trendy. A far cry from some of the built up New York-New Jersey diners that are fancier than necessary.

They manage to offer a lot without the menu feeling overwhelming. To be honest, going through a 20 page diner menu can be exhausting. I went with the pork chops and mashed potatoes, and they were genuinely good. The plate came with a soup or salad, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I was not expecting pineapple on top of the pork chops, but it was great. Overall, I was happy with the choice.

Dessert is part of the appeal here. Peggy Sue’s is known for its old-school diner desserts, especially pie. I went with a milkshake this time and had zero regrets. Next time, I’m ordering pie.

Diner pork chops. Yummy!

Service

Service was exactly what you want on a road trip stop. The food came out quickly, our waitress was friendly, and we were in and out in about 35 minutes. That’s kind of the ideal scenario when you still have miles to go.

Cost

I’ve clearly been spending too much time eating in Los Angeles, because I was shocked by how inexpensive this stop was. Dinner for two came out to around $35.

Peggy Sue’s Diner Conclusion

Would I come back to Peggy Sue’s Diner?

Yes. It was fun, easy, and exactly what I wanted at that point in the drive. If you’re looking for a low-stress stop between Los Angeles or San Diego and Las Vegas (or the other way around), this is a good one.

I’m not coming here expecting anything fancy, and I don’t need to. It’s a straightforward diner that gives you a real break from the drive. The only thing that would make it better would be an electric car charger HAHA.

Sometimes that’s all you need.
