Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 Shoe Review

Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 Shoe Review

The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 is Mizuno’s latest entry into the fast-trainer category…a shoe designed for workouts, tempos, intervals, and even the occasional race. Mizuno built this model to bridge the gap between a plated racer and a traditional daily trainer, making it versatile enough to cover a wide range of miles. But does it really hit that sweet spot? I’m not sure, and to be honest, I’ve been a big fan of what Mizuno has been doing lately.

Before trying the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3, I had a few questions:

Is the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 good for long runs?
I think it can be. It’s fairly easy to pick up the pace, but some may find the heel cutout uncomfortable.

Does the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 fit true to size?
Yes, the shoe fits true to size with a medium width. The upper is breathable and secure. I think it’s one of the better-fitting running shoes out there.

Is the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 worth $180?
It depends on your priorities. If you want a fast, plated trainer for intervals and speed sessions, it delivers. If you want comfort and versatility at this price point, there are stronger choices.

Who is the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 best for?
The shoe is best for forefoot and midfoot strikers who want a snappy, responsive trainer for workouts. It’s also a good pick for Mizuno loyalists who like a more aggressive geometry.

Now, let’s get into an honest Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 Shoe Review.

Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 Upper

The upper of the Wave Rebellion Flash 3 is engineered mesh with an internal midfoot strap that’s supposed to provide extra lockdown. The material itself feels light and breathable, which is exactly what you want for a shoe in this category. Sizing is true to size with a medium width, and the forefoot has enough room without feeling sloppy. Throughout the years, Mizuno has been known to fit long and lean, but in the last year, they’ve widened up their shoes to accommodate more foot types.

The heel counter is kind of weird to me, although maybe that should go into the ride piece. The first couple of runs I did, I felt like I was sliding all over the place. It was like my foot could not find the ground.

The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet and, for the most part, I haven’t had any issues with hot spots or blisters. I do like this upper better than a lot of other ones from Mizuno because I’m not cramming my foot into a very stretchy upper…it just fits well.

As far as fit, I wear between a women’s size 10–11 wide and have found the size 11 to fit the best. I think this is one of the better-fitting Mizuno running shoes.

Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 Ride

This midsole is where the magic happens, and this is where Mizuno the packed in the tech. The midsole is a three-layer system:

  • MIZUNO ENERZY XP (top layer): a lightweight, springy supercritical foam that gives bounce and softness.

  • Glass fiber-infused nylon Wave Plate (middle layer): adds propulsion and helps you move forward.

  • MIZUNO ENERZY NXT (base layer): a stable EVA blend that keeps the ride controlled.

On paper, it sounds like the perfect recipe. And when you’re running fast, it mostly works. The ENERZY XP foam and Wave Plate combination creates a lively toe-off that makes intervals and tempo runs feel quick. The shoe is best when you’re locked into faster paces and leaning forward.

But here’s the catch: transitions aren’t smooth. As mentioned, Mizuno cut a big wedge out of the rear midsole, which forces you forward whether you like it or not. I am generally a forefoot striker, so on paper this should not be a problem for me. But I still felt like I was going to trip at any given time. Heel strikers will feel clunky landings, almost like the shoe is bullying you onto your forefoot. If you’re already a midfoot or forefoot striker, you’ll notice it less, but it still feels more aggressive than natural. Over time, that forced geometry can feel fatiguing. I’m not sure about it. Maybe in the next version they’ll keep the heel and it will be a bit more comfortable to run in.

Where does the Wave Rebellion Flash 3 fit into my rotation? I don’t think the Wave Rebellion Flash 3 is a bad shoe, and there are some glimmers of fun when running in it. I do believe it needs a bit of work though. As far as where it fits into my rotation, it’s been a good daily trainer. You can take it out for a daily run and pick up the pace. I wouldn’t do a track workout in it, but for easy and longer (slower) tempo workouts, it’s been good. I do think the Wave Rebellion Flash 3’s uses are as intended for faster runs, I just can’t say I love it with the heel cutout.

Outsole

The outsole is classic Mizuno…durable rubber with plenty of grip. I had no issues with traction on wet pavement or light debris, and it seems built to last longer than some other plated tempo shoes. Even on lighter desert trails, I haven’t had any issues. Hooray.

As far as durability, I would expect it to last around 400 miles. Mizuno is one of the more durable brands out there, and I’ve already put about 100 miles on the Wave Rebellion Flash 3 with no signs of them slowing down.

Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 Conclusion

The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3 is a mixed bag. It’s fast, durable, and breathable, with plenty of snap for intervals and tempo days. But it also comes with a quirk in the form of the heel cutout. I’ve still been using it and I don’t hate it, it just takes time to get used too especially if you are a heal striker.

Who Should Buy the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3

  • Mizuno fans looking for a plated option that still feels durable and stable.

Who Should Not Buy the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Flash 3

  • Heel strikers…the transitions may feel awkward.

  • Those looking for a true racing shoe.
