Brooks Ghost Max 2 Shoe Review

Brooks Ghost Max 2 Shoe Review

I was excited to try the Brooks Ghost Max 2. The original Ghost Max was “fine,” but I never felt as though Brooks put their best effort into it. It felt similar to the Ghost, albeit more clunky. Personally, I preferred the Glycerin over it. This year feels even more drastic to me and I find the Ghost Max 2 to be more clunky for running. It’s not terrible, but I would prefer running in the Bondi.

Brooks has made running shoes with runners of course, but also people in professions requiring long hours on their feet, like healthcare workers, teachers, and warehouse workers. The Ghost Max 2 continues this tradition, offering a cushioned and orthotic-friendly option.

This year, the Ghost Max is a lot heavier and stiffer. I personally think Brooks missed their mark on using the Ghost Max for running especially now with the debut of the Glycerin Max. That’s fine if they want to transition it to something else, but there shouldn’t be confusion of who it is marketed too.

Before trying the Brooks Ghost Max 2, I had a few questions:

  • What is the difference between the Brooks Ghost Max 2 and Ghost Max 1? Brooks changed the foam to nitrogen-infused DNA Loft v3 foam. I’ll get into more details below.
  • Does the Brooks Ghost Max 2 have a wide toebox? The Ghost series is known for its wider toebox, and the Brooks Ghost Max 2 is no different, although the length of the Max 2 is on the shorter side.
  • Is the Brooks Ghost Max 2 good for walking? YES! I think they are one of the better walking shoes out there.
  • Does the Brooks Ghost Max 2 run true to size? I think it actually runs on the shorter side, which is rare for Brooks, but it is what it is.

Now, let’s get to an honest review of the Brooks Ghost Max 2.

Edit to add: This feels like a super long shoe review. I guess I had a lot to say.

Brooks Ghost Max 2 Quick Facts

  • Price: $149.95
  • Weight: 10.9 oz men’s, 9.6 oz women’s
  • Stack Height: 39 mm (heel) / 33 mm (forefoot)
  • Drop: 6 mm

Brooks Ghost Max 2 Fit

The upper of the Ghost Max 2 is made from breathable engineered mesh, which offers decent ventilation even on warmer days. While it’s not perfect for intense heat, like a workout in the Mojave Desert, for easy runs, it’s “fine.”

The fit of the shoe runs slightly short, so most people will want to consider going up half a size, especially if planning to use an orthotic. The toe box does have plenty of room, accommodating various foot shapes. Those with wider feet will appreciate this extra room, although many will not appreciate that runs on the shorter side.

The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet and once you find the right size, the Ghost Max 2 does that. The midfoot offers a secure fit with a slightly padded tongue that stays in place, even without gussets. After all of these shoe reviews, I’ve realized the running shoe tongue matters. The heel collar is plush and cushioned, adding comfort for long periods of standing or walking. However, some may experience heel slippage due to the wider heel, so consider locking the heel to the last eyelet.

Overall, the upper is a good fit minus running short. This is rare for Brooks, but it does run shorter. In running shoes, I wear between a women’s size 10–11 wide, and like many, I found it a bit short. Size 11 fits best for me. If you’re using the Ghost Max 2 with orthotics, you may need to go up a full size from what you are used to.

Brooks Ghost Max 2 Ride

The Ghost Max 2 features a full-length DNA Loft v3 midsole, which provides a firmer ride than the previous version. The stack height delivers cushioning, but you’ll notice the firmer underfoot feel, especially during longer walks or slower-paced runs. The stiffness in the midfoot and forefoot offers stability, which is great for those with lower arches or those needing extra support. However, the firm midsole reduces the shoe’s responsiveness, making it less ideal for faster running.

Where does the Brooks Ghost Max 2 fit into my running rotation?
It’s definitely an easy-run shoe. I prefer running easy in it, as I find it harder to pick up the pace. I’ll also use it occasionally for walking and standing because the Ghost Max 2 excels most in walking and standing. My recommendation is an easy run shoe or walking around, standing around, and working shoe.

Outsole

Brooks has always made quality and durable shoes, and the Ghost Max 2 is no different. The outsole offers excellent durability, with a rubber design that can handle long miles on roads or smooth trails. I’ve taken it on easy trails and even on inclement weather days, and the shoe shows no signs of slowing down.

In terms of durability, I think you’ll likely get about 300 miles on the Ghost Max 2. If you’re using it primarily for standing or walking, that number may be a bit lower, but the shoe will last a long time.

Brooks Ghost Max 2 vs. Brooks Ghost Max 1

Compared to the Brooks Ghost Max 1, the second iteration brings more stiffness and weight. While the Ghost Max 1 provided a smoother, more flexible ride, the Ghost Max 2 feels clunkier, particularly in the heel area. The DNA Loft v3 foam in the Max 2 is firmer, creating a less cushioned feel than the first version. It’s becoming clear that I was a bigger fan of the Brooks Ghost Max 1.

Brooks Ghost Max 2 vs. Brooks Ghost 16

When compared to the Brooks Ghost 16, the Ghost Max 2 is noticeably heavier and clunkier. While the Ghost 16 is lighter and more responsive for running, the Ghost Max 2 targets those who need more structure for walking and slower paces. The Ghost 16 features a more flexible ride, ideal for those who want to incorporate faster paces. My own personal opinion is that the Ghost 16 is better for running period.

Brooks Ghost Max 2 Conclusion

The Brooks Ghost Max 2 is a solid choice for those needing a shoe for standing, walking, or easy running, especially with orthotics. Its firmer midsole and orthotic-friendly design make it great for those who need more support and structure. That said, I prefer the original Ghost Max for running.
