Exploring Newell Open Space Preserve (American Canyon)
Newell Open Space Preserve in American Canyon is beautiful and I wish I had made it out sooner. I’ve wanted to get out here since moving to Napa but just hadn’t. When I finally made it, I’m glad I did. Seriously I was missing out. Although of any run I’ve ever done, Newell Open Space Preserve has more cows. There were a few times I did stop and make sure they knew my intentions.
About Newell Open Space Preserve:
Newell Open Space Preserve is a 642-acre park in the hills of American Canyon. It remains relatively unknown, which is surprising. It was actually hard to find a lot of information when planning a run.
The space wasn’t open to hikers, runners, and bikers until 2014, so it remains relatively unknown. It’s unfortunate because it’s a great area to run. There is a single main trail that runs through Newell Open Space Preserve. Because it remains unknown to many (even those living in American Canyon), you might find yourself alone most of the time. In my 12 miles run through the park, I saw 1 biker and 1 party of hikers.
At the Newell Open Space Preserve trailhead, you’ll see the single trail. (You can see the full trail map here). You’ll pass a decaying barn, and then about half a mile in; you’ll reach a gait and a fork. It doesn’t matter which direction you take at the fork because it’s a giant loop. The entire roughly 5-mile loop is just over 800 feet of elevation. While the trail is about 5 miles long, it borders Lynch Canyon and you’re able to make it longer. When I come back, I might do that.
Throughout the run, I was never really alone because there are so many cows roaming free. Believe me; cows are much bigger than you think! Even the babies! Of course, I was safe, and didn’t approach them, stopped when needed, so I didn’t threaten them. Just keep that in mind you might get closer to cows than you anticipate. There are plenty of signs that say don’t feed or interact with them.
The trail at Newell Open Space Preserve is relatively wide. There are some uneven sections that it’s good to be careful about. At the top, you can see much of Napa, as well as the Bay Area. The Newell Open Space Preserve has some of the most beautiful trails in the local area, and I am glad I made it out there. It’s definitely a nice spot to run if you’re looking for a scenic run and hills. Do bring water, because there is almost no shade.
