The Nike Alphafly 4 is here, and somehow we have reached the era of the $280 running shoe. Nike announced the Alphafly 4 on September 17, 2026. I knew a new Alphafly was coming eventually, but I wasn’t expecting Nike to change quite as much as it did. The Alphafly 4 is lighter than the Alphafly 3, gets a new ZoomX LT foam, redesigned Air Zoom units, a wider carbon-fiber Flyplate, more forefoot cushioning, and a new Atomknit upper. Nike also says the Alphafly 4 returns 10% more energy than the Alphafly 3.
Before anyone starts calculating a 10% faster marathon, that is a measurement from Nike about the shoe. It does not mean you’ll suddenly become 10% more efficient or run 10% faster. Anyway, the Nike Alphafly 4 is a pretty big update.

What Changed in the Nike Alphafly 4?
A lot, actually. Nike says the Alphafly 4 is 5% lighter than the Alphafly 3 while returning 10% more energy. There is a new foam called ZoomX LT, redesigned Air Zoom units, a wider Flyplate, extra cushioning under the forefoot, and an updated Atomknit upper. I’m most curious about the wider Flyplate.
We know by now, the Alphafly has a massive amount going on underneath your foot. Between the tall stack, Air Zoom units, soft foam, and carbon plate, it has never been a particularly simple shoe. A wider plate could help make all of that feel more stable, especially later in a marathon when form starts falling apart.
The Nike Alphafly 4 Weighs About 6.6 Ounces
Nike lists the Alphafly 4 at approximately 188 grams, or 6.6 ounces, in a men’s size 8.5/women’s size 10. Previous versions of the Alphafly always felt bulky to me and it was a reason I preferred the Vaporfly over the Alphafly.
I find the weight change more compelling here because the Alphafly isn’t a stripped-down racing flat. There are two giant Air Zoom units sitting under the forefoot, a carbon plate, a huge midsole, and enough shoe underneath you that nobody is going to confuse an Alphafly with an old-school racing flat…so getting it down to around 6.6 ounces is impressive.
What Is Nike ZoomX LT?
The Nike Alphafly 4 introduces the new foam: ZoomX LT. Nike describes ZoomX LT as its lightest version of ZoomX cushioning. Instead of building the Alphafly 4 around one ZoomX formulation, Nike combines traditional ZoomX with ZoomX LT. According to Nike, the updated construction contributes to the lower weight and higher energy return.
I’ve written before about why carbon-plated running shoes don’t work the same for everyone…Fancy foam and carbon plate can only do so much if you hate running in the shoe.
Nike Changed the Air Zoom Units Too
The Air Zoom pods are one of the defining parts of the Alphafly, and Nike redesigned them for the Alphafly 4. Nike says the new Air Zoom units are softer and return more energy than the previous version. It is the first major redesign of the Alphafly’s Air Zoom units since the shoe debuted. The Air Zoom units are part of what makes the Alphafly feel like an Alphafly rather than a taller Vaporfly so this is kind of an interesting update.
Nike Alphafly 4 vs. Alphafly 3
I reviewed the Nike Alphafly 3 and liked it more than the earlier versions but it’s not my first choice in shoes…I’m a Puma Fast-R Elite 3 girl myself.
But anyway, between version 3 and 4, Nike took weight out of the shoe, widened the Flyplate, changed the foam, redesigned the Air Zoom units, added forefoot cushioning, and changed the upper.
Will that make me like it more? I have no idea. It could also make people who loved the Alphafly 3 like it less. We assume newer means better, and then six months later everyone is buying the previous version on clearance because they liked it more.
The Nike Alphafly 4 Costs $280
I remember when $250 for a super shoe seemed outrageous. Now we’ve crossed that line enough times that $280 doesn’t even look particularly unusual next to other premium racing shoes. I’ve reviewed plenty of expensive running shoes, including the $320 Diadora Gara Carbon 3, and I still have a hard time casually recommending a shoe approaching $300.
Runners spend an absurd amount of money chasing relatively small improvements. Race entries aren’t getting cheaper either but $280 is also a lot of money to spend because Instagram told you that you need carbon plates to run a PR.
Is the Nike Alphafly 4 Faster Than the Alphafly 3?
Nike says the Alphafly 4 returns 10% more energy than the Alphafly 3 and weighs 5% less. Running economy varies between runners, and shoe response varies too. Even among carbon-plated super shoes, the shoe that is fastest for one person may be uncomfortable for someone else. There is no best running shoe.
When Does the Nike Alphafly 4 Come Out?
Nike officially announced the Alphafly 4 on September 17, 2026. The initial release is limited, with wider availability expected at the end of October. The U.S. Nike Alphafly 4 product page is already live, and Nike is allowing runners to sign up for release notifications. The timing also puts the shoe directly into fall marathon season because of course!
Is the Nike Alphafly 4 Worth $280?
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably made up your mind if you’re buying it or not and my answer isn’t going to change your mind. I’m not answering that until I run in it. I’m especially curious about the wider plate and lower weight because those address two things I’ve struggled with in previous Alphaflys. I’ve never loved how bulky some versions felt, and I’ve never had the magical experience with the Alphafly that plenty of other runners describe.
