Four Sigmatic Protein Powder Review

Recently Four Sigmatic came out with Four Sigmatic Protein Powder. Mushroom protein power?! Can you taste the mushrooms? Does it taste good?

First, What Does Four Sigmatic Mean?

Four Sigmatic foods are some of the most studied and nutrient-dense foods out there. There are only 100 foods that are qualified, including coffee, green tea, cocoa, and coconut. I had no idea until learning more about the company Four Sigmatic.

Four Sigmatic’s actual meaning is four sigmas (which means four standard deviations) above average food.

What about the Brand Four Sigmatic?

Four Sigmatic originally began in Finland but moved to Los Angeles. It is one of the leading companies in the mushroom supplement space. Four Sigmatic’s main products include Four Sigmatic Adaptogens, Four Sigmatic 10 Mushroom Blend, Four Sigmatic Ground Mushroom Coffee, Four Sigmatic Protein Powder, or even Mushroom Cacao Mix.  If you want to add the benefits of mushrooms into your diet but hate the taste, Four Sigmatic is a great option.

What are Functional Mushrooms?

What is the difference between “regular mushrooms” and functional mushrooms?

Most mushrooms you eat will have nutritional value, but functional mushrooms also provide benefits outside of their nutritional value like mood benefits, skin support, immunity, and even cognitive benefits.

New Types of Functional Mushrooms: Lion’s Mane, Shiitake, Tremella, and Turkey Tail. Four Sigmatic Protein Powder contains almost all.

Can you taste the mushrooms?

In all of the Four Sigmatic products, you don’t know there are mushrooms in the products until you are told. LOL, so to answer the first question, no, you can’t taste the mushrooms. I’ve reviewed several products, including the Four Sigmatic Coffee as well as Four Sigmatic Adaptogens. I have yet to try a Four Sigmatic product that you know there are mushrooms in it.

What makes the Four Sigmatic Protein Powder different?

It contains 18 grams of a blend of 5 organic vegan proteins with a balanced amino acid profile and a high dose of 7 mushrooms and adaptogens. It does not contain grains, gums, or other fillers. Instead of artificial flavors or sweeteners, Four Sigmatic Protein Powder uses real unrefined cacao, which lends to the natural flavor.

In short, Four Sigmatic Protein Powder is:

  • organic
  • gluten-free
  • vegan
  • third party tested
  • 2 grams of added sugar

Ingredients in Four Sigmatic Protein Powder:

One thing that I appreciate is that Four Sigmatic lists all of their ingredients on their website. You know exactly what is going into your body.

  • Plant-based protein(18 g per serving)
  • Chaga Mushroom(200 mg per serving)
  • Reishi Mushroom(200 mg per serving)
  • Cordyceps Mushroom(200 mg per serving)
  • Lion’s Mane Mushroom(200 mg per serving)
  • Turkey Tail Mushroom(200 mg per serving)
  • Ashwagandha(250 mg per serving)
  • Eleuthero(250 mg per serving)
  • Other ingredients: Cacao Powder, Coconut Milk Powder, Coconut Palm Sugar, Pink Himalayan Salt, and Monk Fruit.

Four Sigmatic Protein Powder Cost:

For a can of the Four Sigmatic Protein Powder (with $15 servings), it costs $40. For pure protein powder, that is about average. You can obviously get cheaper protein powders with fillers, but for pure and minimal ingredient protein powders, that is about average.

My Experience with Four Sigmatic Protein Powder:

As always, the most important part. Companies can talk about how “good their product is,” but if it tastes gross to eat or drink, I’m not having it.

I tried the peanut butter flavor. Right off the bat, the texture of Four Sigmatic Protein Powder is smooth and easy to mix. It actually tastes natural and with no weird aftertaste like some protein powders do. Plus, it genuinely tastes like peanut butter.  It’s one of the few protein powders I have tasted that tastes like what the name is and doesn’t have any weird aftertaste.

I mixed my Four Sigmatic Protein Powder to make a smoothie (listed below). It tastes good, and it’s easy to drink. I cannot emphasize enough that you “don’t taste the mushrooms.” So if that is a fear for you, you don’t need to worry.

Four Sigmatic Protein Powder Recovery Smoothie (like a chunky monkey peanut butter smoothie):

  • 1 Serving Four Sigmatic Protein Powder
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup milk (I used almond milk)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter

Mix together in a blender and consume. I’ve been working hard to consume something within 30 minutes of activity, and I drink this after most of my runs.

Conclusion:

As a protein powder, Four Sigmatic is one of the better options I’ve tried. It isn’t gritty and tastes good and natural. It can be tough to find a protein powder without an aftertaste. I’ll definitely keep using it. I haven’t found any negatives about it other than it’s a little more expensive than some protein powders. It makes up for that with quality ingredients. Finally, you would never guess the primary ingredient is mushrooms.
