Nike Vomero 17 Review

The Nike Vomero 17 has received a fairly significant update. It has been a while since I’ve run consistently in the Vomero, which is unfortunate because it used to be one of my favorite shoes. But things change, life changes, and it just hasn’t been a shoe I’ve gravitated towards lately. This year, the Vomero abandons the traditional Zoom Airbag for a more plush and energetic ride. What sets the Vomero apart from many high-cushioned trainers is a higher heel drop while still staying relatively light. Before trying it, I had a few questions about the Nike Vomero 17:

  • What is the Nike Vomero 17 for? These days, it’s an easy run shoe with a ton of cushion. It’s not a maximum cushioned shoe, but it has more than the Pegasus.
  • Is the Nike Vomero 17 a stability shoe? No, if you’re looking for a stable shoe, consider the Nike Structure.
  • Is the Nike Vomero good for running? Yes, it’s one of the classic running shoes and is one of the few Nike shoes that are good for running.
  • Are Nike Vomero 17s true to size? This year, they are! Nike is known for being narrow, but their running shoes are usually not as narrow as people think.

Nike Vomero 17 Fit and Upper:

The new engineered mesh upper is more breathable and lighter. That’s good because the last few versions weren’t breathable at all. While this isn’t perfect, it’s definitely a step up from previous versions. The Vomero 17’s last has also been updated to be a little bit longer. Previously, there were complaints about it running short, but it now runs much more true to size.

The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet, and for the most part, the Vomero 17 does that. I do find that the thicker upper is not as breathable as I would like, which is unfortunate coming into the Mojave Desert summer. The thicker heel counter also comes up high, so I found it rubs a bit on the back of my foot. Nothing that causes blisters, but I do notice it’s there.

In running shoes, I wear between a women’s size 10-11 wide. I found the size 11 (regular width) to fit the best, and I do think Nike finally got the fit of the Vomero right.

Nike Vomero 17 Ride:

The new Vomero has some significant updates to the midsole. Nike removed the forefoot Zoom Air for a softer, more responsive ride. To be honest, I wish they hadn’t. As a forefoot runner, I appreciated and liked the extra cushion in the front. This version is fine too, but I do appreciate more cushion in the front. Nike also added its racing foam, ZoomX, and Cushlon 3.0 to make for good sink-in comfort. This also makes the midsole much more durable.

Where does the Nike Vomero 17 fit into my rotation? It’s an easy run shoe with plenty of cushions. It’s great for days when I don’t want to run particularly fast but want something that is still responsive. It can pick up the pace fairly easily, so it also makes a good multipurpose training shoe. It’s like the Nike Pegasus but just more cushioned and slightly heavier.

Outsole:

The Nike Vomero 17 outsole features thick, high-abrasion rubber with a tailored waffle pattern. This helps enhance grip on various surfaces, making it a reliable companion for runners tackling different terrains. I wouldn’t say this is a “trail running shoe,” and really, Nike has plenty of those. But it can handle inclement weather and some light trails. I’ve run on sandy desert trails as well as in rainy weather with no issues.

As far as durability, I expect the Nike Vomero 17 will likely last around 400 miles. It’s a high-cushioned, durable trainer.

Nike Vomero 17 Conclusion:

The Vomero 17 has definitely been updated with a more plush and energetic ride. It fits and feels a lot different than previous Vomeros, so if you’re looking for a high-cushioned and durable trainer, it’s a great option.

Who should buy the Nike Vomero 17? If you’re looking for a high-cushioned and durable trainer, it’s a great option.

Who should not buy the Nike Vomero 17? Those who are looking for a lighter and faster feel might find the Vomero to be “too bulky.” If you’re running in hot conditions (à la Mojave Desert in the summer), you might find the upper doesn’t breathe as well as you would prefer.
