The first World Athletics Ultimate Championship is happening September 11-13, 2026 in Budapest, Hungary, bringing Olympic champions, world champions, Diamond League winners, and many of the fastest runners in the world together for three nights of racing.

This is a brand-new track and field championship with a much shorter format, massive prize money, and 28 events packed into three evenings.
There is also $10 million in World Athletics Ultimate Championship prize money, the largest prize purse ever offered at a single track and field competition.

What Is the World Athletics Ultimate Championship?
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship Budapest 2026 is a new biennial championship designed to finish the outdoor track and field season.
According to World Athletics, 381 athletes representing 65 federations are competing across 28 disciplines.
Qualification brings together Olympic champions, world champions, Diamond League winners, highly ranked athletes, and selected invitees.
The racing format moves quickly. The 1500 meters and 5000 meters are straight finals, while events including the 100, 200, 400, and 800 meters use semifinals followed by finals. Field events have fewer attempts than athletes receive at a traditional championship.
As someone who races plenty of 5Ks, including the Twilight 5000 track race, I like seeing the 5000 meters placed directly into a final rather than adding qualifying rounds.
How Much Is the World Athletics Ultimate Championship Prize Money?

Individual event champions earn $150,000, second place receives $75,000, and third receives $40,000. That $150,000 winner’s check is enormous by track and field standards and is one reason the new meet has received a lot of attention. One race can come with a six-figure payout.
World Athletics calls it the richest single competition in track and field history.
World Athletics Ultimate Championship Results
The first night already delivered one of the weekend’s biggest distance races.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men’s 5000 meters in 12:59.24, using a late kick to beat American Cole Hocker, who finished second in 13:00.05. Parker Wolfe finished third in 13:00.13.It was a major return for Ingebrigtsen following Achilles surgery and earned him the $150,000 first-place prize.
Mondo Duplantis won the men’s pole vault after clearing 6.20 meters, while Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the women’s high jump. Ja’Kobe Tharp won the men’s 110-meter hurdles in 12.94.

Watching an elite 5000 is slightly different from running my own Carlsbad 5000 or Bolder Boulder 10K, although I will happily take some notes from a 12:59 athlete LOL.

Saturday’s events include the women’s 1500-meter final, women’s 800-meter final, men’s and women’s 100-meter finals, and men’s and women’s 400-meter finals.
Sunday includes the women’s 5000-meter final, men’s 800-meter final, men’s 1500-meter final, men’s and women’s 200-meter finals, and both 400-meter hurdles finals.
The compact schedule means nearly every section of the broadcast has a championship race.
