Running Bondi Beach to Coogee Walk

Running Bondi Beach to Coogee Walk

The Bondi Beach to Coogee walk is one of those Sydney things everyone tells you to do. Usually, they say walk. Naturally, I heard that and decided to run it because apparently I cannot go anywhere scenic without turning it into a run. I didn’t actually know: “is the Bondi Beach to Coogee Coast Walk runnable”? The answer is yes but you’ll go slower than if you stayed on the Bondi Beach running path…but that’s ok. I ended up liking it so much, I did it twice!

The Bondi Beach to Coogee Coastal Walk is about 6 kilometers one way, depending on where you start, where you stop, and how much your watch panics near cliffs, stairs, tourists, and beachside buildings. If you run it out and back, you’re looking at roughly 12 to 13 kilometers. I kept going and quite frankly, it was hard to turnaround because it is so scenic.

I started at Bondi Beach and ran toward Coogee. You can do it in either direction, but starting at Bondi gives you the classic beach start, Bondi Icebergs, Tamarama, Bronte, Waverley Cemetery, Clovelly, Gordons Bay, and then Coogee. It is a highlight reel of Sydney beaches with a side of stairs. So many stairs.

Bondi Beach to Coogee Running FAQ

How long is the Bondi Beach to Coogee walk?

The Bondi Beach to Coogee Coastal Walk is about 6 kilometers one way. If you run it out and back, expect roughly 12 to 13 kilometers depending on your exact start and finish.

Is the Bondi Beach to Coogee run hard?

It is not hard in a race-course way, but it is not flat or smooth. The stairs and short climbs add up, especially if you are running both directions. I got about 1000 feet of elevation.

What is the best direction to run Bondi Beach to Coogee?

I liked running from Bondi Beach to Coogee because it starts with the classic Bondi view and ends at another beach with bathrooms, showers, and food nearby. Running Coogee to Bondi also works, especially if you want to finish at Bondi.

Is the Bondi Beach to Coogee Coastal Walk good for marathon training?

It can be a good easy run during marathon training or half marathon training, especially if you want time on feet and rolling terrain. I would not use it for tempos, intervals, or anything pace-based.

Are there bathrooms along the Bondi Beach to Coogee walk?

Yes, there are bathrooms and facilities at several beaches along the route, including Coogee. Still, plan ahead because crowds and beach traffic can make everything take longer.

What shoes should I wear to run Bondi Beach to Coogee?

Regular road running shoes are best. The route is mostly paved, but there are stairs, turns, and damp areas, so I would choose a daily trainer with decent traction.

Is the Bondi Beach to Coogee Walk Good for Running?

Yes, but it depends on what kind of run you want.

If you want a scenic run in Sydney, the Bondi Beach to Coogee run is excellent. If you want a fast workout, tempo, or clean splits, absolutely not. This is not the place to prove anything to Strava. There are stairs, narrow sections, walkers, dogs, people taking photos, wet patches, turns, railings, and the occasional group moving four-wide. The wet patches and rocks are what made me most nervous and I did walk some so I didn’t fall off a cliff.

I treated it as an easy run and that was the right call. There are runnable sections, especially near the beaches and along some of the wider paved areas.

The Bondi Beach to Coogee walk is best as an easy run, shakeout, scenic recovery run, or part of a longer Sydney running route. I call these types of runs: derping runs. They are classic zone 2…who cares about pace in this very scenic area.

Before Running the Bondi Beach to Coogee Coastal Walk

I would recommend going early. I know, I know, no one wants another blog telling them to wake up early, but this route gets busy. Bondi is popular, Coogee is popular, and every beach between them is popular for a reason. The views are good and people enjoy nice things. Rude of them. The first time I ran around 7, it was busy but not bad. However, the second time I ran around 9:30 am, it was pretty crowded.

Morning is best for running because the path is less crowded, the light is better. Weekdays are easier than weekends, but even on a weekday, this is Sydney. There will be people.

I wore regular road running shoes and that was perfect. The route is mostly paved, with stairs and some uneven sections, but it is not a trail run.  A daily trainer with decent traction is the move. You definitely need good shoes though.

Running from Bondi Beach to Tamarama

Starting at Bondi Beach is fun because it feels like Sydney immediately. You pass Bondi Icebergs early, and yes, it looks exactly as cool as every photo makes it look. I really wanted to swim there and was super nervous about the cold water. Spoiler: I ended up swimming when we went back and I got the perfect wavey day for the full experience.

Hey…that’s me!

The run out of Bondi toward Tamarama is where you figure out that the Bondi Beach to Coogee Coastal Walk is not a flat beach path. There are stairs, ramps, turns, and sections where you need to stay aware of walkers. It is gorgeous.

This section felt like the most classic “I am running in Sydney” moment. Ocean to one side, cliffs, beach views, and enough climbing to remind me this was not going to be a casual boardwalk jog.

The slick boardwalk made me nervous!

Tamarama to Bronte

Tamarama is smaller than Bondi, and the path through here is one of my favorite parts of the Bondi Beach to Coogee run. It feels a little less hectic. There are stairs and rolling sections, but you can get into a rhythm for a bit.Bronte is a good place to stop if you need water, a bathroom, or a reset. If you are walking, this would be an easy coffee stop. I liked this section because it felt more runnable than I expected.

Bronte to Clovelly

From Bronte, the route heads toward Waverley Cemetery and then toward Clovelly. This is one of the most scenic sections of the Bondi Beach to Coogee Coastal Walk, and it is also one of the sections where runners need to be smart. There are stairs, turns, and narrow areas where you cannot just barrel through.

The cemetery along the coast is beautiful. This section reminded me that the Bondi Beach to Coogee run is more of a “run adventure” than a straightforward training route.

Clovelly, Gordons Bay, and Coogee

Clovelly is a good marker because once you get there, you’re getting closer to Coogee. The final stretch into Coogee is a great finish. Coogee Beach has bathrooms, showers, and food. It is busy!

Coogee also makes a good finish if you are meeting someone after, grabbing breakfast, or taking public transport back. The best part about running the Bondi Beach to Coogee walk is that you can turn it into whatever you want: a short one-way run, an out-and-back, a walk-run with photos, or a run with a swim afterward. I actually added another mile out because I was really enjoying the scenery. I wanted to keep going, but I also didn’t want to do 20 miles.

Tips for Running the Bondi Beach to Coogee Walk

Start early if you want fewer people. The route is popular, and it should be because it is beautiful, but runners will have a much better time before the day gets busy.

Do not plan a workout here. The Bondi Beach to Coogee run is great for an easy run or scenic miles, but the stairs, crowds, and turns make it a bad choice for anything structured.

Bring water or plan your stops. There are fountains and bathrooms along the route, but I would still plan ahead, especially if you are running in warmer weather or adding extra miles.

Wear normal road shoes. You don’t need trail shoes, but you do want something that handles stairs and damp pavement. I would save super shoes for a different day.

Be polite. You are running on a shared path, not a race course. There are walkers, families, dogs, photoshoots, and people who are there to enjoy Sydney at their own pace. You will see a lot of dogs. Give space, slow down when needed, and do not be the runner everyone complains about later.

Would I Run the Bondi Beach to Coogee Coastal Walk Again?

Yes. The Bondi Beach to Coogee run is one of the best ways to see Sydney as a runner. I’ve run thousands of miles and this was easily in my top 5 favorite running routes. It is scenic, easy to follow, and gives you beaches, cliffs, stairs, ocean pools, and enough chaos to keep it interesting.

It is not a fast route. It is not the route I would pick if I cared about pace.

I would run it again early in the morning, keep it easy, finish at Coogee, and maybe add a swim or breakfast after.

  1. I love the walk from Bondi to Coogee. So fun that you were able to run it. I’d love to swim at Bondi Icebergs. I didn’t get a chance when I was in Australia. Such a beautiful place.
