I was excited to try the Mizuno Neo Zen. I’m always looking for cushioned daily trainers to log the boring miles. The Mizuno Neo Zen is Mizuno’s latest addition to their running shoe lineup, designed to bring a new level of comfort and performance to runners seeking a plush, responsive ride.
Over the last couple of years, Mizuno has been pushing the boundaries with their new running shoes. They still have staples like the Wave Rider and Wave Inspire, but they’ve started adding new and more modern versions to cater to the ever-changing landscape of running shoes.
Before trying the Mizuno Neo Zen, I had a couple of questions.
- Does the Mizuno Neo Zen fit true to size? Unlike many of the newer Mizuno running shoes, the Mizuno Neo Zen does indeed fit true to size.
- What kind of shoe is the Mizuno Neo Zen? It’s a modern daily trainer with plenty of cushions.

Mizuno Neo Zen Fit
Ok this is not necessary, but the shoe box for the Neo Zen is super fun. A metallic shoe box? Neat. The Mizuno Neo Zen features an engineered mesh upper that focuses on breathability and flexibility. The mesh material allows for ample airflow, which is great for keeping your feet cool during longer runs or on hot days. Mizuno strategically places reinforced overlays to provide structure without adding unnecessary weight or creating hot spots.
The fit of the Neo Zen is true to size, with a slightly roomy toe box that accommodates natural toe splay. This makes it a great option for runners who need a little more space in the forefoot. The padded tongue and collar add to the overall comfort, locking the foot in place without feeling overly snug. Warning: when you first try and put the Mizuno Neo Zen on your foot, you are going to wonder if you have the right size. Maybe I just have a big heel. After sliding it on the first time, it was much easier to get on thankfully.
Mizuno’s use of their Dynamotion Fit technology ensures that the upper moves naturally with the foot, reducing the risk of blisters and irritation. This adaptability is a great feature for runners who prioritize comfort over a tight, performance-oriented fit.
The best running shoes disappear off your feet, and the Mizuno Neo Zen does just that. I haven’t had any issues with hot spots or blisters. As far as sizing, I usually wear between a size 10–11 in running shoes, and the size 11 for Mizuno fits the best.
Mizuno Neo Zen Ride
The heart of the Mizuno Neo Zen lies in its midsole. As I always say, the midsole is where the magic happens. Mizuno uses their innovative Enerzy Foam, which offers a balance of soft cushioning and responsive rebound. This dual-function foam provides enough shock absorption for long distances while maintaining enough bounce to keep turnover quick and efficient.
The 8mm heel-to-toe drop gives the shoe a natural, smooth transition through the gait cycle. Runners who prefer a slightly lower drop but still want ample cushioning will appreciate this balance. I’ve now put about 100 miles on the Mizuno Neo Zen and found the midsole foam is durable and holds up well over time, maintaining its responsiveness even after high mileage.
Mizuno has also included a sculpted heel design to enhance stability. This subtle flare at the rear of the shoe keeps the foot centered during landings, reducing the risk of rolling or instability, especially for runners who strike at the heel.
Where does the Mizuno Neo Zen fit in my rotation? I thought it would be a daily trainer/easy run shoe, and that’s exactly what it is. It fits and feels good for those daily runs where you don’t have a pace in mind. It can definitely handle faster easy run paces, but there are better shoes to do a workout in. If you’re looking for a daily run option, the Neo Zen is a good one!
Outsole
The outsole of the Mizuno Neo Zen is built with X10 carbon rubber, Mizuno’s high-durability rubber that extends the life of the shoe while providing excellent traction. I’ve used mine on roads and in inclement weather with no issues. The tread pattern is designed for road running but performs well on light trails or gravel paths. Flex grooves are strategically placed to promote natural foot movement and improve flexibility during toe-off.
Despite its durability, the outsole remains lightweight, complementing the overall construction of the shoe. The combination of durability and performance makes the Neo Zen a solid choice for runners who want a shoe that lasts without sacrificing speed or comfort. Even with 100 miles, the Mizuno Neo Zen feels great, and I think it will last around 400 miles or the average daily trainer length. I’ve never tried a Mizuno shoe that wasn’t extremely durable, so I’m happy to report this one is too.
Mizuno Neo Zen Conclusion
The Mizuno Neo Zen stands out as a great running shoe and strong start to 2025. Its combination of Enerzy Foam cushioning, breathable upper, and durable outsole makes it an excellent option for daily training.
