Route 66 Classic Grill (Canyon Country, CA)

While heading down to Los Angeles Airport, I stopped at the Route 66 Classic Grill in Canyon Country, CA. It’s been one of the top diners I’ve wanted to go to since moving to the desert. Since it’s over an hour away without traffic, there hasn’t been a great time to go.

It’s about halfway from my house to the airport; it made sense to stop. I got there around 4:30 pm, and there were a few other parties inside, but it was not crowded.

Route 66 Classic Grill Atmosphere: A

If you picture a stereotypical diner, the Route 66 Classic Grill is it. While it’s not a chrome building, the inside is one of the most retro diners I’ve been to.

The exterior is a fairly modern, stand-alone building. There is plenty of outdoor seating on the side. Inside, a jukebox, parked Volkswagen, a small bar section, and everything is bright and shiny. The booths are a fun license plate pattern. I haven’t seen anything like that, but I loved the vibes as soon as I arrived.

They even have bike night every Wednesday that you can ride your motorcycle in! They also have Classic Car Shows on the second Saturday of each month. Plus special events for Corvette and 4×4 enthusiasts. How fun is that?

Coffee: X

I didn’t get coffee this time around since I didn’t want to get stuck in traffic.

Route 66 Classic Grill Food: A

The Route 66 Classic Grill menu has everything you want or need in a diner. They have all-day breakfast, quesadillas, plus of course, lunch and dinner. I was impressed by their nearly full page of salad options. If you are looking for a healthy diner option, they have that too. You can see the full Route 66 Classic Grill menu here.

Route 66 Classic Grill (Canyon Country, CA) quesadilla

I had no idea what I wanted. I didn’t want anything too heavy to put me to sleep, but I was also hungry. I settled on the vegetarian quesadilla with broccoli, cauliflower, olives, and much more. Plus cheddar cheese. The quesadilla was stacked with cheese; in fact, 90% was cheese. But I didn’t mind since the cheese is probably the best part. It was a good choice.

Route 66 Classic Grill Service: C

I was super disappointed with how long the food took. It wasn’t busy. I placed the order about 20 minutes before I arrived, and it took another 20 minutes to come out. In all, it took 40 minutes to come out. The staff was friendly, but I didn’t plan to wait for a total of 40 minutes for food. I should have placed the order when we lived an hour prior.

Cost: $$

For my quesadilla, it was $15. The Route 66 Classic Grill is one of the more expensive diners I’ve been to, and there were plenty of meals that cost upward of $20.

Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back?

I liked the Route 66 Classic Grill; I wish the service were a little faster. There are plenty of options that I want to try in the future. Plus, they have nights where you can bring and display your old vintage cars. I would love to come back during one of those nights. It’s fun to see a diner that has classic car shows as well!
