Located in the heart of downtown Napa, I decided to take a trip to Jax Diner. Unlike many diners, Jax Diner is located in high traffic, walkable area, next to a couple of other restaurants. It’s rare to find a diner on the main street so that is always fun.
The Jax Diner is also called the “Jax White Mule Diner.” It took me a few weeks to realize it is the same diner.
Atmosphere: A
Napa is one of the few California counties open for some indoor seating, but when I arrived, it looked like they were favoring outdoor seating. There is plenty of space, and the tables are spaced evenly. Inside there is a full bar. No one was seated inside at the time.
Inside it looks more like tavern or cocktail bar. No part of it reminded of a “diner”
Coffee: B
The coffee at Jax Diner was brewed hot and fresh. There was nothing unique or unusual about it, but it was good.

Food: B
The Jax Diner menu has several options, including omelets, scrambles, and lunch options, including steakhouse burger and grilled cheese. It is, however, missing a lot of traditional diner items like a plethora of pancake options.
The Jax Diner menu is more upscale, so if you’re looking for an upscale brunch spot, Jax White Mule Diner is more like that. You can see their full menu here.
I decided to order the chicken and waffles. The waffles were good, slightly soft, and the fried chicken tasted good. I think the waffle could have been cooked slightly longer, but other than that, I have no complaints, and I was happy with my decision.
Service: A
The host at Jax White Mule Diner was friendly, and my food was ready quickly. I felt safe and comfortable at Jax Diner. The staff was wearing and enforcing masks, and the tables were spread out.
Cost: $$
Wow, Jax might be one of the most expensive diners I’ve been too. For my chicken and waffles, and the coffee, it was $24. I thought the chicken and waffles were good, but not $24 good.
Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back?
I liked Jax, but it’s extremely expensive. I hesitate to really call it “a diner,” and it more reminds me of a tavern or brunch spot. While the food is good, the price is high.
If you are looking for a good brunch spot, consider Jax but don’t come here thinking it’s a retro greasy spoon diner.
