The adidas Ultraboost 5X represents a major step forward in the Ultraboost line. I was really excited to try it! I remember when the Ultraboost first came out. It was a highly cushioned trainer. Then, for a while, it migrated to a lifestyle shoe, but now it’s back as a serious training shoe. If you’re looking men’s running shoes or womens running shoes, adidas has both!
Before trying the adidas Ultraboost 5X, I had a few questions:
- What is the purpose of the adidas Ultraboost 5X? It’s a daily training shoe. This year, it can handle faster paces better.
- Does the adidas Ultraboost 5X fit true to size? Yes! I’ve had no issues with sizing. Especially now adidas has removed the midfoot cage!

adidas Ultraboost 5X Upper and Fit
The Ultraboost 5X features a full-length mono Primeknit upper, offering a snug, sock-like fit. The upper is stretchy and flexible, adapting to your foot without feeling restrictive. The lack of a midfoot cage makes the fit more adaptable, especially for runners with wider feet. I’m really happy the cage has been removed because it makes the shoe more comfortable for wider feet. No more restriction in the midfoot, hoorah!
The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet, and I’ve found the adidas Ultraboost 5X to do just that. I’m a big fan of adidas removing the cage and letting our feet be free (probably because I have a wider foot). I haven’t had any hot spots or blisters either.
Typically, I wear between a women’s size 10–11 wide in running shoes, and the adidas Ultraboost 5X fits true to size. I wear a size 11, which seems to be my usual size in adidas.
adidas Ultraboost 5X Ride
The standout feature of the Ultraboost 5X is the LightBoost 2.0 midsole. I mean the midsole is usually where the magic happens in running shoes! This foam is firmer than previous versions, delivering a snappy and responsive ride. This feels completely different in a good way compared to older models. The Ultraboost 5X now offers real responsiveness. You don’t feel like you’re sinking into the abyss and can get some speed.
The 10 mm drop feels even higher due to the shoe’s posterior heel flare. However, the midsole performs well at faster paces, making it ideal for uptempo efforts and fartlek training.
Where does the adidas Ultraboost 5X fit into my rotation? Previous versions of the Ultraboost were more suited for easy runs, but I’ve found the Ultraboost 5X great for running at uptempo paces. It’s definitely not a speedwork shoe, but it’s nice if you want to pick up the pace during a daily run. I often pack it for days when I’m not sure what kind of run I’ll do and want a shoe that can handle anything.
Outsole
Durability is a major strength of the adidas Ultraboost 5X. With full-length rubber coverage, this shoe grips well on most smooth surfaces, whether on the road or light trails. I’ve always had a great experience with the durability of adidas shoes, and the Ultraboost 5X is no different.
I’ve used the Ultraboost 5X in inclement weather as well as on light local trails with no issues. The full-length rubber provides great grip when the conditions aren’t always ideal.
adidas Ultraboost 5x Conclusion
I’m really excited about what adidas has done with the Ultraboost 5X. Its lightweight, snappy midsole and adaptable Primeknit upper make it an excellent choice for runners seeking a stylish, comfortable shoe for faster runs. Over the last few weeks, I’ve definitely become a big fan of running in it.
