Whitman Diner

Tim and I met one of our mutual friends at the Whitman Diner in Turnersville, NJ. It was one of those days that everything seemed to go wrong. Before arriving to the diner, we had fallen asleep, it began pouring rain and the traffic in South Jersey was awful.  I ended up being awoken by a text saying…seeing you in 15 minutes (my drive there would be much longer).  After recently moving from the actual garden part of the state (to the stereotype Jersey) I have had to get used to new traffic patterns in NJ. This diner was only 9 miles from my house yet took 29 minutes to get too.

Atmosphere: A
The atmosphere is very retro diner. It screams retro diner. The old school red booths and silver linings allow it to scream classic diner.  I tried to take a good photo but none were as good as their facebook photos.

Coffee: A
They were easily able to add whipped cream. She refilled it multiple times and it was deliscious. Nothing unusual or special about the coffee but it was good!  If there are multiple refills and the whipped cream is good…I’m pretty easy to please.

Food: B
The menu is pretty big. They have all of the diner staples but it was a little less variety than you would expect. It wasn’t a big deal but I was surprised they had a limited choice of milkshakes.  I had been craving a milkshake but they only had chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.  I was craving a cookies and cream.

The one thing that annoyed me (about the food and menu) was how littered the menu was ads. It was one page of meals, one page of ads. I completely understand it as a means of bringing in revenue but seeing women in bikinis doesn’t entice me to order anything.  It was the first time I had seen this.

We (by we I mean me) first ordered the pita and hummus appetizer. It was really good pita bread. I don’t have much knowledge of hummus but it was good.  The pita bread was perfectly buttered and the hummus was just good.

I ordered their house specialty salad “the Rocketman”. It came with arugula, corn, avocado and ahi tuna. The salad was really good but I do wish it was bigger. I hadn’t had tuna in so long but I could tell this was some of the best tuna I’ve ever had. It could be the contender for the absolute best  I’ve had at a restaurant.  Although I was left relatively hungry afterwords, it did allow me to have room for dessert.

Dessert: A
I will be honest one of the main reasons I had interest in this diner was the advertisement of red velvet cake. I had been most concerned with that aspect of the meal! This diner was on my to do list and listed in the “dessert” category.  I got red velvet cake and vanilla ice cream. The cake was delicious and lived up to my hopes. The cream cheese frosting was one of my favorites to date. The ice cream was also very good…The red velvet cake lived up to it’s expectations for sure!

Would I come back?
I really enjoyed this diner and I will be back at some point. The only thing that weirded me out was the women in bikini ads on the menu. It seemed like they were doing a really good business and that was unnecessary. What do I know though?  So yes, I will be back.  I would recommend going if you are ever in South Jersey or Turnersville.

The Whitman Diner is in my top 5 Diners of South Jersey so far.

Questions for you:
Do you like tuna?
I ate a lot (read at least 3-4 nights) of grilled tuna one semester. It was easy and quick. I grew tired of it and never touched it again. Honestly, this makes me want to get back into eating tuna again occasionally.
Are there any restaurants near you that you want to try?

Food Day Monday and Real Girl Streaks

Okay yes.  True life:  I promised I would do a food blog soon and what better way than Monday.  Wow is it already another Monday?  And not just any Monday!  It’s the mom’s birthday.

So yes.  My weekend went Matt’s graduation, fathers day and now the moms birthday.  Tomorrow is also epic as my pool opens but it isn’t quite a um…celebration.

This is when my azz actually sat in a guard stand. Now I just deal with the problem people.

Without further ado: nom noms of the day

This is now my working week of summer time hours when I wake up errday at 6am.  I go to the gym to either lift, swim or run outdoors from 6:30-7:30.  It depends on my mood and how I slept the night before.  I do not run on tired legs.  It’s not my jive.  EVER.

I come home, make breakfast and am out the door by 8:15 since I need to be there at 8:30. Except Mondays because that’s my day off since the pool isn’t open on Mondays.  I thought I would at least get into the routine today.

Breakfast today was…just for the occasion of food blogging and changing it up.  Two egg sandwiches.

I had a ton of homework for my online classes so I caught up on that all morning.  Then I was already starving by say 11:30 so I decided to make myself more tuna fish sandwiches.  Sandwiches must have been my jive today.

Tuna Melt+chedder cheese is the

Then I got my aerobic action on, as I do every Monday.  So I guess I don’t really have the day off, but I don’t consider aerobics to be much work.  The ladies are hilarious and the time always flies right on by.  Today I integrated superbass and finally found a good remix of party rock anthem.  I swear the ladies wish they had my booty beats aerobics CD when they were off on their own outside of class.  They always ask for all the songs bahaha.  I’m a terrible influence.

Dinner was the mom’s favorite (similar to my favorite I suppose).  Ham, sweet potatoes and corn.  Does anyone else have a strange addiction to ham?  I find it incredibly tasty.

Oh and I’m a 4 day real girl streak.  I know you probably are as shocked as I am.

Question for you:

What is your summertime routine?

Don’t Leave Me Home Alone

I think my father secretly likes being referred to as the daddykins on the blog.  It makes him feel so famous.  I think he also gets tired of me rambling off about my blog in true life but I’m wearing real girl clothing so there is only so much I can do.

Hmm, Thursday was a big day for me.  I became-Hollie-ultra domesticated female.  I did some baking (peanut butter cookies), cleaning, and even laundry.

I really do believe if I wasn’t so sassy, I could just go major in professional housewife blogging, running, swimming woman.  I feel that is a pretty standard degree at most colleges.

I’m glad you guys enjoy the new header.  I actually hated the other one but never got around to changing it.  It is my summery and joyous, kinda ,like me.  Now I suppose I can look at my own blog once in a while (like déjà voo?).

Today was not too exciting of a day sadly.  I made a waffle before heading off to the pool which is where I spent the majority of my day.

I'm not sure why my blueberry jam looks redish. Either way it was still nomtastic.

I hate eating on the run but when I do 99% of the time, it is a tuna fish sandwich.  It’s kinda like my staple lunch at the moment.  Between helping new guards and eating, I managed to get a tempo run of 8 miles in there somewhere.  VA weather was glorious today as it wasn’t too humid or hot.

I do feel the need to share with you the most delicious dinner that I made last night.  I got it of all places off the back of the cheese package.  I’m kinda in love with cheese with mozzarella, cheddar and feta and parmesan being my favorites.  Oh wait-crumbly bleu cheese.  No and goat cheese.

Okay yes-cheese is good.

Anywho without further ado (and you know all my recipes take cerca de 15 minutes or less to prepare…).

2 cups cooked pasta

½ pound Italian sausage

1 package spinach leaves

1 can diced tomatoes

1 cup mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons parmesan cheese

Mass amounts of garlic

  1. Crumble sausage into large deep skillet and cook on medium heat for 10-12 minutes.  Stir occasionally.
  2. Drain sausage then add spinach and tomatoes and cook until spinach has wilted.
  3. Add in the cook pasta followed by cheese and garlic.
  4. Then eat (99% of it like I did…actually my brothers were home, I can’t take all the credit)

Questions for you:

  1. 1.       Staple lunch?
  2. 2.       What are your plans this weekend? (Are you racing?)

Blerg-I’m doing a triathlon.  I”m more nervous then god knows what but we can chit chat about that tomorrow.  Oh and aDuBs is doing a 5k so go wish her luck.

Same Ole Jazzy Jazz

Since I’m clearly a regularly scheduled program-I can finally say and now back to your regularly scheduled program.  Except I’m at home now…I haven’t really done any normal shenanigan filled blogs in a week or so.  But now that I home, things might be oh so much different.

I’ll still be running and swimming and eating pancakes (do you even need to ask?)

But I’ll be teaching some jazzy weight lifting aerobics starting next Monday.

I typed aerobics into my photos and found this picture of how I was shocked my ladiez actually loved my class. hm.

And I’ll be cycling (ah!!) sometime in the future.  I got a sweet old Schwann Bike to attempt this triathlon in a couple weeks.

Oh and I’m taking human anatomy lab at 7:45-9:45 at night.  Um…grandma Hollie does not approve.

But other than that same ole same ole.

Please guess what kind of waffle that I made today.  I’ll give you some clues, clearly it is some sort of chocolate but it also has some sort of other hint of flavor (which makes it my favorite!).

Any guesses?

For lunch I had a tuna fish sandwich on flat bread (because we had no normal bread left)  and asparagus.  I saved the other half for after my swim.  I don’t like mayonnaise at all and it disgusts me, so I add lots of mozzarella cheese into too tuna fish and melt it and it is the

Dinner tonight was a new recipe!  You guys would be so proud.

Chicken parmagiana as found here.

It was quite delicious and I’m a big fan of chicken parmasean as is my family.  As you guys know-anything on this blog is for the easy simpletons like myself so if I can do it…so can you.  😉  I paired it with pasta which is rather boring so I opted not to photograph it.

Since I wasn’t ready to run just yet, I decided to do a nice long and slow swim at the pool.  It ended up being 2000 meters of swimming and 2000 meters of pulling.  It actually really stretched me out thank goodness.

Well-I’m off to my human anatomy and physiology lab which is from 7:45-9:45pm.  You know…the time I’m normally laying in bed, god help my lab partners.

Questions for you:

1.       Favorite flavor of chocolate?

I prefer dark chocolate with orange or coconut (nomtastic).  I also like a lot of different fruit flavors with dark chocolate.

2.       Are you a fancy cooker or do you prefer easy and quick recipes?

Ding Ding Ding Now Starting Round 1

Of Finals week (for me anyways).

Finals Day Round 1. An excuse to wear makeup and put my hair in the worlds greatest messiest side bun on top of my head. AKA anti real girl days.

Don’t think I’m lazy my blogging bffs, I’m not.  I have two finals that required any studying and one that requires much more than the other.  Both of them are math.

My first one was today at 10:15 and it went well.  I was very pleased with it.  I’m pretty sure I got at least a 90.

The second one (and harder one) is on Wednesday.

I have a few presentations for education amongst there…but if you can’t tell I enjoy talking so no big deal.  Apparently I’m a decent public speaker as I can keep the class amused for a rousing 20 minutes when I normally present…go figure.

Needless to say, I have never really been in a situation like this that my finals aren’t making me sweat too much.  I mean they are obviously, but there is not a need for me to stay in the library for countless hours like every other time.  My finals this semester have more or less have been a culmination of projects and speeches with two intense math tests.

I won’t complain because I don’t want to jynx it.
Today because it was blistering cold and rainy the temperature dropped back down to 35 and pouring rain.  Needless to say I kind of hid in my room before and after finals and under about 1000 layers of covers.

Since it was so cold out, I decided it was appropriate to have a nice ole warm blueberry waffle topped with Greek yogurt and more blueberries.

I’m rather proud of how my photography skillz have progressed since the year has gone by.  One day I hope to be as classy as some of those photographers that make you crazed with hunger just staring at their food.

To continue to chain of food photography, I took a picture of my “garbage salad”.  I call it a garbage salad because it was like I dumped everything and anything found on the salad bar into the salad.  All topped with feta cheese.

Yes there is chicken, ham, banana peppers, olives, spinach, oranges, pears and cheese all in that salad.

If you squint you can see my corn and roast beef sandwich in the background...somewhere...

I’ve also been getting into tuna fish sandwiches for snacks lately (because I have 10 cans of tunafish that I need to use up before the end of the week).  1 can of tuna fish+1/4 feta cheese+ half a bottle of parmesan cheese, all toasted up.  It is certainly a nomtastic snack that I can eat in class and guarantee no one will sit next to me.  Perfect.

Questions for you:

1.       Did you have any particularly rough or easy finals weeks?
Last Spring Semester, I had a rough one studying for my graduate level math course.  (I almost decided to do a BA/MA (bachelors-masters) program at school where you get your masters  in math alongside your bachelors in 4.5 years.)  Uh yeah hardest test of my life.  It was worth it though because I got a 3.0 in class but was more in limbo about math in general.  Needless to say I didn’t want to get a masters in math.  That was the hardest semester of my life to begin with though.  It began my questioning of weather math was really for me or not or if I care for proofs. Random side notes of my life.

2.       Would you rather swim 2 miles in open rough currents water or run 15 miles on the treadmill staring at the wall with no music or tv?  Feel free to tell me why.
