Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT)

Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT)

When in Connecticut for the Sea Legs Shuffle 10 Miler, Alexis and I wanted to go to a new diner. I’ve been to a bunch of diners in Connecticut, but new diners are always fun.  We noticed the Shoreline Diner was conveniently located near the race start and it looked interesting. How many diners also promote a vegetarian menu?

We arrived around dinner time, and it wasn’t too crowded.

Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT) Atmosphere: A
The Shoreline Diner exterior is bright purple and retro. It’s not metallic or shiny, but any purple building stands out.

The inside is that of a typical dining experience. There are plenty of booths, tables, and a full-length bar. It’s bright and open, so you don’t feel like you’re sitting on top of anyone.

Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT) Coffee: A
The coffee was brewed hot and fresh, and I enjoyed it. The whipped cream tasted good too.

Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT) Food: A
The Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave menu is unique that they have many different vegetarian options. You don’t see that very often. Everything is fresh and one of the freshest I’ve seen for a diner.  They are known for their vegan breakfast, greek salad, sweet potato fries, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. How many diners do you know, known for their vegan options? If you need to follow a special diet, they have plenty of safe options and the waitress even asked if we were allergic to anything before taking our order.

I wasn’t sure what I was in the mood for so I decided to go for a salad and their chicken souvlaki.

The “Super Salad” was fresh and had organic baby kale, strawberries, walnuts, and goat cheese with a balsamic dressing.  It was one of the better salads I’ve had a diner.

The chicken souvlaki was good. There were plenty of sautéed vegetables with chicken and all on a pita. It tasted great and was filling.

Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT) Service: A
Our waitress was friendly, and the food came out fast. I couldn’t ask for a better experience.  She refilled our beverages, and I have no complaints.

Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT) Cost: $
For my salad, coffee, and chicken souvlaki, it was $30. I technically did order two meals, though.

Overall Thoughts/Summary of the Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave (Guilford, CT)?

I liked the Shoreline Diner and Vegetarian Enclave. It is one of my more favorite diners in Connecticut.  It’s one of the more unique diners I’ve been to. I would love to come back sometime and explore some of the vegan and vegetarian options.

Town Square Diner (Matawan)

Town Square Diner (Matawan)

Town Square Diner (Matawan)

Recently I went to the Town Square Diner in Matawan. One of my goals is to go to a few more diners in that general area.  Previously the Aberdeen Diner, a few years ago, it was reopened under the name Town Square Diner.

Town Square Diner Matawan

Town Square Diner Atmosphere: B
The Town Squire Diner is located in the Aberdeen Shopping Center. It’s not a standalone diner and just blends in with the rest of the shopping center.

Town Square Diner Matawan

Once you get inside, it looks like a diner. It’s dimly lit with plenty of booths, tables, and a bar.

Town Square Diner Coffee: B
The coffee at the Town Squire Diner was brewed hot and fresh. It wasn’t anything unique or unusual but it was good. I could have used more refills, but other than that, it was good.

Town Square Diner Food: B
The Town Square Diner menu has everything you would expect in a diner. There are plenty of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Plus there were several different menu specials.  In fact, the specials are what spoke to me.

Town Square Diner Matawan

I arrived around lunchtime and didn’t know what I was craving. One of their specials: The Shrimp Salad caught my eye. It came with arugula, shrimp, avocado, and artichoke hearts. The salad was good but I do wish it was bigger.

It also came with soup and I chose lentil. The lentil soup was delicious but it was hot, so hot in fact, that I burned out my tongue. That was my fault, though.

For my salad and coffee, it was $18.

Our waitress at the Town Square Diner was friendly and our food came out fast. Without rushing, I was in and out within 45 minutes.

I liked the Town Square Diner. The meal was fresh and the food came out fast. I would go back.

Stargate Diner (Seaford, De)

Stargate Diner (Seaford, De)

A few weeks ago, I stopped at the Stargate Diner. I’ve driven by the Stargate Diner in Seaford about 50 times going from New Jersey to Virginia. Located in Seaford, De, the Stargate Diner is an easy stop for anyone going down route 113.

Stargate Diner seaford DE

Atmosphere: C
The outside of the Stargate Diner has a large sign and is a modern building. It’s not an old metallic, shiny, diner, but it looks and appears clean.

The Stargate in Seaford has the typical feel of a small-town diner; there are plenty of booths, tables, and even a salad bar.

Stargate Diner seaford DE

The bathrooms were out of service, and there was a sign that said: “Rotorooter on the way.” Had I desperately needed to go; I would have been forced to leave the restaurant and drive somewhere.

Coffee: B
The coffee was good, but nothing extraordinary.  It was hot and fresh.

Stargate Diner seaford DE coffee

Food: B
The Stargate Diner has everything a stereotypical small-town diner would have. From multiple breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, they have it all. They are known for comfort food like french toast, crab cakes, country fried chicken, sausage gravy, pork chops, or onion rings, but they have healthy options like salads or even turkey bacon. There were a few specials as well, but nothing that called my name.

Since I was on the road, I wasn’t in the mood for anything hot or too heavy and decided to order their greek salad with chicken. The Greek Salad itself was a decent size and had plenty of chicken, olives, grape leaves, and feta cheese. I didn’t love their homemade dressing, and it was so thick and salty. The salad itself was decent, and I would order it again, but I would choose a different dressing.

The waiter was friendly, and my food came out fast. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. Which is great, because my bladder would not have lasted much longer.

Cost: $
For my salad and coffee at the Stargate Diner, it was $11.

Overall Thoughts/Summary:
The food at the Stargate Diner wasn’t bad, but I don’t know if I would come back, due to the bathroom situation. Hopefully, they fixed that within the hour I left.

DeLuca’s Diner (Pittsburgh)

DeLuca’s Diner (Pittsburgh, PA)

Recently I was in the greater in the Pittsburgh area, and I wanted to try a new diner. A quick google search found the DeLuca’s Diner.

DeLuca’s Diner Atmosphere: A
DeLuca’s Diner is located in a large shopping center. The inside is brightly painted with the solar system. There are plenty of booths, tables, and a small bar as well.  It is stereotypical of a diner.

DeLuca’s Diner Coffee: A
The coffee was brewed hot and fresh, and the waitress refilled it often. In all, I have no complaints.  While the mugs given were not personalized, they have many options for sale.

DeLuca's Diner Pittsburgh coffee

I ended up purchasing a personalized coffee mug (which the proceeds go to a local animal shelter!).  How awesome is that?

DeLuca’s Diner Food: A
There are plenty of menu options from all-day breakfast and lunch.

Here are a few DeLuca’s Diner menu options that interested me:

  • Mancini raisin toast and marbled rye toast (nowhere has marbled rye)
  • Soft tortilla filled with refried beans, tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers.
  • House salad

All-day lunch isn’t something you find everywhere! From the tables around me, everything looked delicious.

DeLuca's Diner Pittsburgh breakfast sandwich

I decided to order a breakfast sandwich. It came with meat, cheese, and an egg, all on a homemade piece of bread. It was a great sandwich, and I have no complaints.

Vicki’s Diner (Westfield)

Vicki’s Diner (Westfield)

A few weeks ago, I met Christine at Vicki’s Diner. Christine and I have been to many diners together, including one of my first 30. She was one of the first friends I made when I moved to NJ. We have both moved multiple times since.

Anyway, we arrived to Vicki’s Diner in Westfield around lunchtime. It was busy, but there was still plenty of booths and tables available.  Vicki’s Diner is one of two Westfield Diners. The other diner is Westfield Diner.

Vicki's Diner Westfield

Vicki’s Diner Atmosphere: A
There are very few diners in the small towns of NJ. It’s fun to see a diner on a Main Street. Vicki’s Diner is the only diner on the main street of Westfield. It’s metallic and shiny and stands out in the storefronts.

The inside is what you imagine in a diner. There are plenty of booths, tables.m, and they fit a lot in a small diner.

Vicki’s Diner Coffee: A
The coffee at Vicki’s Diner was brewed hot and fresh, and was tasty. They brewed it well and one of the better coffees I’ve had.

Vicki's Diner Westfield coffee

Viicki’s Diner Food: B
Vicki’s Diner menu has everything a diner typically has. There is plenty of breakfast, lunch, and even dinner too.

I wasn’t sure what I was in the mood for. Then I saw there was a “jumbo salad” designed for two people. When I see a salad that is designed for two people, I always think it’s a good salad for me. More often than not, I’ve been disappointed with a salad size.

Vicki's Diner Westfield salad

I ordered salmon on it, and I was happy I did. The salad itself was good but could have used more toppings. The only thing that made it a “Greek salad” was the feta cheese and onions. It lacked toppings like pita bread as well as olives. In all, it was good, and the size was perfect for me. Most people would have to take some home.

Vicki's Diner Westfield salad

My issue with the salad was how it was packed. It was stuffed into a tiny bowl that looked pretty but once you attempted to eat it, it made a mess. I wish restaurants would use more practical dishes to plate food. If it barely fits into a bowl, how am I supposed to eat it?

Vicki’s Diner Service: A
The waitress at Vicki’s Diner was kind, and the food came out quickly. I couldn’t have asked for a better service.

Vicki’s Diner Cost: $
For my salad and coffee, it was $20.

Overall Thoughts/Summary of Vicki’s Diner:
I liked Vicki’s Diner, and if I’m in the area, I’ll be back. Westfield is one of my favorite small towns to walk around.  It’s fun to see a diner on the main street.
