The Yellow Rose Diner (Keyport)

Recently I met Jess at the Yellow arose Diner in Keyport, NJ. There are a bunch of diners up that way that I haven’t been to yet.

We met around 5 pm at dinner time, and it was empty.

Atmosphere: B
The Yellow Rose Diner is a small building on the main road. It’s not a big, shiny, diner but a more modest building.

The inside looks like most other diners, and there is plenty of seating with both booths and tables. There is a full-length bar and a big TV as well.

Coffee: B
The coffee was brewed hot and fresh, but there wasn’t anything unique or exciting about it. It wasn’t bad or good.

Food: B
The Yellow Rose Diner has all of the regular diner meals. There are plenty of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. There is even a “Del Rio” special, which long term readers know before living in NJ, I lived in the middle of nowhere, Texas (Del Rio).

I’ve been in a Manhattan Clam Chowder mood and ordered a cup of that. It was hot, and I almost burned my tongue. It was good, but I found there wasn’t that many clams and a little too much potato.

For my entree, I ordered one of their special salads which came with spinach, cranberries, raisins, bleu cheese, cucumbers, walnuts, onions, and salmon. The dressing was balsamic. The salad itself was small, but it was good. I firmly believe any salad should come with bread, so I was disappointed it didn’t have that. Other than being small and a lack of bread, it was an overall good salad.

Service: A
The waiter was nice, and our food came out in a relatively fast time. The manager or owner also came over to check on us. I always appreciate when a business owner does that!

Cost: $
For my soup, salad, and coffee, the cost was $15.

Overall Summary/Thoughts:
I liked the Yellow Rose Diner and thought it was a good stop. Was it my favorite diner ever? No, but it wasn’t bad.

Soda Jerk Diner (Hummelstown, PA)

Recently, I was driving through Hummelstown. I haven’t been out in the area in years (it’s right near Hershey Park). I was driving through the mid-morning, and while I wasn’t starving, I was hungry, so I decided to stop.

The Soda Jerk Diner is located in a small strip mall. When I arrived mid-morning, I got the last parking spot in the lot.

Atmosphere: A
The Soda Jerk Diner stands out in the strip mall. It’s a large shiny, chrome restaurant front. When you walk in, you feel like you are in a blast from the past and walking into a diner. It’s everything you picture in a restaurant from the checkerboard floor, shiny tables, and jukeboxes. You couldn’t ask for a more picturesque diner if you tried.

Coffee: A

The coffee was brewed hot and fresh, and it was delicious. I have no complaints.

Food: B
I wasn’t sure what I was in the mood for. The Soda Jerk Diner has everything from breakfast specials, lunch, and dinner. Since I wasn’t starving, I decided to order the Greek salad with salmon. I also added a cup of spicy crab soup because it sounded good.

The spicy crab soup was a pleasant surprise. I like spicy food, and the spicier, the better. The soup had a nice kick but wasn’t overly powerful.

The salad was ok. It was by no means the best salad or best diner salad I’ve had. I could have used more greens as well as pita bread, grape leaves, or anchovies. I doubt I would order it again.

Service: A
The waitress was friendly and my food came out quickly. I have no complaints.

Cost: $
For my soup, coffee, and salad, it was $20.

Overall Thoughts/Summary:
I liked the Soda Jerk Diner in Hummelstown. I would go back, but I would probably order something else.

Park Place Diner (Denver, PA)

While traveling through PA, I decided to stop at the Park Place Diner in Denver, PA.

It’s right off the Pa Turnpike if you’re driving through. I was looking for something easy and right off the road.

Atmosphere: A
The Park Place Diner is everything you picture in a diner. It’s big, cobblestone, and has plenty of windows.

The inside has rows of booths, tables, as well as a full-length bar. You walk by the dessert case, and it was enough to have me committed.

Coffee: A
The waitress brewed a fresh pot of coffee. The coffee mug was a logo mug, and the coffee was just plain good, if not one of the best I’ve recently.

Food: A
The Park Place Diner has everything a diner would have. There is breakfast all day, plenty of lunch and dinner specials.

I wasn’t sure what I was in the mood for. I ultimately decided I wanted some greens and ordered the Greek salad was salmon. The salad was huge and also came with both anchovies and grape leaves. Having a Greek salad without grape leaves seems naked. In all the salad was excellent and I have no complaints.

Dessert: A
I ordered a raspberry mousse cup to go, and it was delicious. The outer shell was a chocolate shell which made it even better. After cake, I like mousse and frosting type of desserts.

Service: A
The waitress was friendly, and my food came out quickly. It felt like I blinked, and it was there.

Cost: $
For my salad and dessert, it was $22.

I enjoyed the Park Place Diner, and I’ll be back again.

Prestige Diner (New Providence)

Recently, I met with my friend Christine at the Prestige Diner in New Providence. The Prestige Diner has been on my “to do list” for a while. I’ve heard nothing but positive things!

Atmosphere: A
When we arrived almost every parking spot in the lot was taken. It was busy, but it was also a Sunday around lunch. We both managed to get a spot and waited at the front for about 15 minutes for a table.

The Prestige Diner is cute. It’s got a large cobblestone exterior. The interior has plenty of seating with booths, tables, and a bar. We sat at a table in the back.

Coffee: A
The coffee was hot and fresh. There wasn’t anything especially good or bad about the coffee. The waitress did add plenty of whipped cream.

Food: B
The Prestige Diner has everything you expect in a diner. From multiple breakfast options to lunch, and dinner you’ll find everything.

We were hungry, so we decided to order the Mediterranean appetizer. It came with a bowl full of olives, pita bread, feta cheese, and tomatoes. The number of olives alone made it worth it.

For my entree, the entire page of salads intrigued me, so I decided to order the “mama besides salad.” It came with Grilled Chicken, Baby Spinach, Diced Tomatoes, Red Onions, Walnuts and Creamy Goat Cheese with Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing.

It was a good salad. I could have used bread with it, but it was filling.

Service: C
While the Prestige Diner was busy, it felt as though the waitress had no interest in being there and was having a bad day. We asked for a few things, like drink refills that took a long time and our food came out fairly slowly.

Cost: $
For my salad, coffee, and appetizer, it was $25.

Overall Thoughts/Summary:
I liked the Prestige Diner, and there is a lot I want to try on the menu. I would go back if I were in the area.

Beach Diner (Point Pleasant)

Recently, my good friend Cyd from New Jersey Isn’t Boring, and I met up at the Beach Diner in Point Plesant, NJ. We had originally planned to meet at another diner, but it was closed for good. Luckily, a quick google search led us to the Beach Diner.

Atmosphere: A
The Beach Diner is located close to Point Plesant Beach. It’s not a big, metallic diner, but a cute beachy restaurant. The inside has local paintings and photos. It fits the area.

Coffee: A
The coffee was brewed hot and fresh, and the waitress refilled it often. I appreciated how much whipped cream she gave as well.

Food: B
The Beach Diner has a smaller menu. There aren’t many unique or special items, but the Beach Diner has everything a stereotypical diner has with plenty of lunch specials.

Both Cyd and I were craving something healthy, so I decided to order their specialty salad which came with lettuce, apples, cranberries, walnuts, cucumbers, feta cheese, and chicken. The salad was good, but somewhat small and I was left hungry afterward. It could have used bread or more lettuce.

Service: A
Our waitress was friendly, and our food was brought out quickly. It was a pleasant experience.

Cost: $
For my salad and coffee, the cost was $13.

Overall Thoughts/Summary:
I liked the Beach Diner, and it turned out to be a positive experience. It’s a great local diner, down the shore. I’m sure it’s busy during the summer!
