BistroMD Meal Delivery Service: Is it actually worth it?

I was curious about the BistroMD Meal Delivery Service: Is it actually worth it? Meal delivery services are everywhere now. And most of them are either geared toward bodybuilders eating 40 grams of protein per meal or those dieting. I decided to give BistroMD a try because it promises something a little different: doctor-designed, chef-prepared meals aimed at sustainable weight loss.

Note: As many people know that consistently read the blog, I opt not to plate and make meal delivery menu items look different then they are. I want to see what they *really* look like, not a doctored up view.

Before trying BistroMD Meal Delivery Service I had a couple of questions:

  • Is BistroMD Meal Delivery Service good? To me, it’s fine. It’s not the best or tastiest meal delivery service but simply: “fine”.
  • Is BistroMD worth it? I don’t believe so. You can get very similar frozen meals from the grocery store at a fraction of the price.

Let’s get into an honest review of BistroMD Meal Delivery Service.

BistroMD Meal Delivery Service Review

About BistroMD:

BistroMD was founded by Dr. Caroline Cederquist and her husband, Ed, with a clear goal: make healthy eating simpler for real people with real lives. After years of treating patients struggling with weight gain and metabolic issues, Dr. Cederquist realized that even the best advice doesn’t work if meals aren’t satisfying or convenient. So, they built something better: nutritionally sound, doctor-designed meals that actually taste like something you’d want to eat at your own dinner table.

Unlike other diet programs that leave you hungry or confused, BistroMD gives you fully prepared meals created by professional chefs and guided by actual science. The meals are high in protein, balanced for blood sugar, and portioned with long-term success in mind. Members get access to real dietitians and a supportive online community.

About BistroMD Meal Delivery Service:

I’ll admit…I was skeptical at first. The branding feels very clinical, almost like a hospital wellness brochure. It doesn’t have the same fun, trendy vibe as some other meal kits, but that’s probably because BistroMD isn’t trying to win over the TikTok crowd. It’s targeting people who want structure and results, especially those who don’t want to think about what to cook every day.

BistroMD Meal Delivery Service Website:

The website is not great. It’s slow, and I don’t love that you must pay for your service before choosing meals. I would prefer to see what I’m buying. Then it just takes forever to load. It was painfully slow to order, and I actually gave up at one point. They choose meals for you, and there were a few different options I wanted to try BUT I didn’t want to wait for the website to load, HA.

You can pick a plan (5 or 7 days per week, with or without snacks), and they’ll recommend meals for you. As mentioned, you can customize them if you want, which I appreciated. I just didn’t appreciate how slow the website was. I’m not trying to lose weight, but there are options for weight loss, gluten-free, etc.

It’s also not apparent how many calories or macros the food has. I’m used to other meal delivery services like CookUnity or Factor where you can see exactly what you’re ordering (and CookUnity has options that are 300–1000+ calories), so I prefer to know that before I decide what kind of meal I’m ordering. I guess you just trust BistroMD.

BistroMD Meal Plans:

Each plan is designed by doctors and dietitians. Whether you’re managing a specific condition or just looking to simplify your healthy eating routine, there’s something here for you.

BistroMD Meal Plans Available:

  • Standard Plan – Ideal for overall wellness. This plan is flexible and fits a variety of lifestyles.

  • Gluten-Free Plan – Carefully crafted and tested to FDA gluten-free standards, this one’s great for people with Celiac disease or gluten sensitivities.

  • Diabetic Plan – Every meal contains 25g or less of net carbs, supporting steady blood sugar levels throughout the day.

  • Heart Healthy Plan – Meals meet the American Heart Association’s guidelines with less than 600mg sodium and under 3.5g saturated fat per serving.

  • Menopause Plan – Designed to stabilize blood sugar and manage insulin, helping with energy, fat metabolism, and hormonal balance.

Packaging and Delivery:

Everything arrived frozen and packed well with dry ice. No weird leaks or soggy boxes, which has happened to me with other services especially during the Mojave Desert summer. Each meal was labeled clearly with nutritional information, ingredients, and heating instructions.

I liked that there was no prep required. You literally just pop the tray into the microwave, heat, and eat. No dishes. No cleanup. And honestly, that’s a game-changer during busy weeks. The one thing that is confusing is it says on the package: “keep frozen” but then the directions say to put in the fridge to microwave.

How Do the Meals Taste?

For me, BistroMD Meal Delivery Service is not the right choice. Most meals are between 300–450 calories. Which is fine, but that isn’t filling. I felt (and I did) eat two of them or one and a half, and I never really felt like it was enough.

The meals themselves are just fine. I don’t feel like I’m getting a super unique option as a meal delivery service, and a lot of them felt like things I could have picked up frozen in a grocery store. There is almost no salt, and they don’t have a ton of flavor. They were still edible, but I don’t believe they were the “best ever” or tasted amazing. They were ok. I ate them, but they weren’t things that I was like, wow, I want to order this again.

BistroMD Cost:

  • 5-Day Plan (Lunch & Dinner): $149.90

  • 5-Day Plan (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner): $187.35

  • 7-Day Plan (Lunch & Dinner): $188.86

  • 7-Day Plan (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner): $219.80

BistroMD isn’t cheap, especially compared to making your own meals, and I don’t believe it’s worth it. To me, you can get similar options at the grocery store for less. There is nothing really that stands out to me from a frozen meal at the grocery.

BistroMD Conclusion:

At the end of the day, BistroMD just wasn’t the right fit for me but I can see how it could work for others. If you’re someone who needs structure, doesn’t want to think about what to cook, and prefers a more clinical, results-driven approach to eating, it does deliver on those things. It’s consistent, it’s portioned, and it’s designed with long-term goals in mind. But if you’re someone who enjoys flavorful meals, bigger portions, or more flexibility in your daily diet, you might find it lacking.

The meals were fine, the convenience was great, but nothing about it wowed me or made me want to reorder. I think there are better meal delivery services out there that offer more variety, better taste, and even more transparency around calories and macros. And if you’re just looking for a healthier frozen option, your local grocery store probably has similar choices for way less.

That said, I do appreciate that BistroMD is built around science and real medical expertise. It’s not just a trendy fad. It’s clear they’re trying to solve a bigger problem and for the right person, it could be a great tool in building healthier habits that actually stick.

Who Is BistroMD Good For?

  • Busy professionals: If you don’t have time to cook but still want nutritious meals, this is for you.

  • Those with dietary needs

Who Should Skip It?

  • Foodies: If you love cooking or want Instagram-worthy meals, you’ll probably be underwhelmed.

  • Athletes needing high-calorie meals: Most meals fall in the 300–400 calorie range, which is not enough.

  • People who hate microwaves: Everything is designed to be reheated, so if you’re against that, this isn’t your service.
