Summit Diner

Summit Diner (Summit, NJ)

The Summit Diner is one of the most iconic and well known diners in New Jersey. It’s been featured on several best diner lists and even ranked in many national lists. I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to get there. I was in Summit for the day and decided to stop at the Summit Diner.

Summit Diner

Summit Diner Atmosphere: A

You can’t get a more perfect old school, retro diner. It sticks out on the main street of Summit. The entire town of Summit is a cute downtown and the Summit Diner looks like a blast from the past sitting on the main street. You can’t miss it.

The inside of the Summit Diner has about 8 booths and 15 bar stools. I chose a barstool right in front of the register.

Summit Diner Coffee: B
The Summit Diner coffee tasted good. Since it’s a low key, no-frills diner, the coffee was similar. It got the job done.

Summit Diner Food: A
The Summit Diner menu is written on the top of the diner. You can read it all while sitting. Since the Summit Diner is known for their great food, I had no idea what I wanted to order. I was between breakfast and ultimately decided to order their greek salad wrap lunch special.

The Summit Diner lunch specials came with soup and I chose Clam Chowder.

Summit Diner manhatten clam chowder

I like Manhatten Clam Chowder and it was better than most diner soups I’ve had. The Manhatten Clam Chowder had a nice kick to it.

My lunch special also came with french fries which I didn’t realize. The Greek Salad wrap tasted good and I have no complaints. There was plenty of actual salad and it was wrapped in a way I could eat it. Wraps are often hard to eat but the wrap at the Summit Diner was wrapped perfectly so it wasn’t messy.

The french fries tasted good and they were crispy but not overly crispy.

In all, my meal at the Summit Diner was great and I was happy with it.

Summit Diner Service: B
You have the choice to either sit in or to go and it appears the Summit Diner does about half of each.  The man who took my order looked to be a manager. He was friendly and my food came out within 15 minutes.

Cost: $
For my Greek Salad Wrap Lunch Special and coffee it was $11.50, which was one of the most expensive items you could get.

Overall Thoughts/Would I Go Back?
I liked the Summit Diner and I can see why it’s considered one of the best diners in the state. It’s definitely one of my more favorite diners.

The Truck Stop Diner (Kearny)

The Truck Stop Diner (Kearny)

Recently I was in the Hackensack, Kearny, and Jersey City area. Since it was around lunchtime, I decided to stop. I was hungry but not starving. The Truck Stop Diner is unique because, as the name indicates, it’s located at a real Truck Stop. When we arrived, there were dozens of trucks parked in the massive parking lot.

The Truck Stop Diner (Kearny)

The Truck Stop Diner Atmosphere: B
The Truck Stop Diner has a stereotypical diner atmosphere. The outside is relatively boring and just has the name “The Truck Stop Diner.”

The Truck Stop Diner (Kearny)

The inside of The Truck Stop Diner is everything you imagine in a diner. It’s all metallic with chrome seating. There are old schools, booths, tables, and a full-length bar. At the front of The Truck Stop Diner, they sell lottery tickets and candy-like an old school gas station.

The Truck Stop Diner (Kearny)

The Truck Stop Diner Coffee: C
The coffee at The Truck Stop Diner was ok but not great. It was nothing to write home about.

The Truck Stop Diner Food: C
The Truck Stop Diner menu has everything you picture in a diner and more. There are plenty of breakfast and dinner options. There is a smaller menu at the top of the diner, which at first I thought we were limited too, but then the waitress brought over a full menu. The Truck Stop Diner is known for their “great food”.

When I went to order something, the waitress laughed and said: “oh, we don’t serve that anymore. They try new things and they don’t usually work’. I laughed and tried to order something else which they didn’t sell anymore either. Finally, I just asked the waitress what they did sell and ended up with a vegetable wrap with sweet potato fries.

The wrap was better than I anticipated and the sweet potato fries were nice and crispy. In all it was good food, but I do wonder how many options on The Truck Stop Diner menu they have.

The Truck Stop Diner Service: B
The waitress at The Truck Stop Diner was interesting. I’m sure she’s been working there for a long time. She was quirky but nice and our food came out quickly.

The Truck Stop Diner Cost: $

For my wrap and coffee, it was $12.

Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back to The Truck Stop Diner?
The Truck Stop Diner was a decent stop. I probably wouldn’t be back because there are other, much better places in the general area. Is it a fun spot to check out? Yes. Was the food decent? Yes. Was it a 5-star restaurant? No.

Tuckahoe Family Diner

Tuckahoe Family Diner (Tuckahoe, New Jersey)

While driving down to Cape May, I decided to stop at the Tuckahoe Family Diner. I’ve had the Tuckahoe Family Diner on my to-do list for a while, but the timing never works out. It’s a small diner and only open until 4 pm

Tuckahoe Family Diner

Tuckahoe Family Diner Atmosphere: A
The exterior of the Tuckahoe Family Diner looks like something right out of the movies. It’s an old, small, trolley car style diner. The inside has a few booths and a bar. When we arrived around lunchtime, there were only a couple of other parties.

Tuckahoe Family Diner

Coffee: A
The coffee at the Tuckahoe Family Diner was brewed hot and fresh. It tasted good. One unique part was the Tuckahoe Family Diner had french vanilla creamers. I like french vanilla, so it was a fun addition.

Tuckahoe Family Diner Food: B
The Tuckahoe Family Diner menu has everything you want in a small-town diner.  There aren’t a lot of healthy options, but there are plenty of breakfast and lunch specials. I decided to order the Greek wrap, which came with egg, feta, greens, and onions inside a wrap. It also came with chips and a pickle.

The wrap itself was good, but it wasn’t wrapped well and immediately imploded when I went to eat it. Other than that, it was good, and I would order it again.

Tuckahoe Family Diner Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back?
I liked the Tuckahoe Family Diner and if I’m back in the area, I will go back. It’s a fun stop on the way to Cape May or Wildwood. You won’t find anything fancy, but it’s a good stop.

Nudy’s Cafe (Paoli)

Nudy’s Cafe (Paoli)

A few weeks ago, writer Jen M. and I met up at Nudy’s Cafe in Paoli.  Jen was out that way and we both wanted (and needed) to get out for a hike. She suggested Nudy’s Cafe, which recently opened.  Nudy’s Cafe has several locations in the suburbs of Pa; including Ardmore, West Chester, Phoenixville, Exton, and many more. After spending more time than anticipated riding through Philadelphia Traffic (when is that not the case?), I made it.Nudys Cafe Paoli

Nudy’s Cafe (Paoli) Atmosphere: A
The exterior of Nudy’s Cafe is clean, modern, and cute. It’s not a big, shiny, diner but a small modern building. The inside is bright and clean. There are several tables throughout the diner.  We sat in the back corner.  It wasn’t crowded but there is plenty of space, so you don’t feel like you’re sitting on top of anyone.

Nudy’s Cafe (Paoli) Coffee: A

The coffee at Nudy’s cafe was great. The waitress kept both Jen and I’s coffee refilled at all times.  It was hot and fresh, locally brewed Lacas coffee. I couldn’t have asked for better coffee.

Nudy’s Cafe (Paoli) Food: A

The Nudy’s Cafe menu has everything a stereotypical diner usually has, but it’s only open for breakfast and lunch. The promise at Nudy’s Cafe is to make you feel welcome, nourished and excited about coming back because of the freshly-made, great food.

On the menu, there are plenty of omelets, sandwiches, and salad options. On the back, there was a full page of specials. I contemplated the avocado toast (I’ve never had that before) but ultimately decided to order the Greek Wrap with a side mixed salad.

Nudys Cafe Paoli wrap

The Greek wrap was stuffed with chickpeas, feta cheese, greens, onions, and tomatoes. The side salad wasn’t anything unusual but tasted good too. In all, it was a good meal.

Nudy Cafe (Paoli) Service: A
Our waitress at Nudy’s Cafe as nice and our food came out extremely quickly.

Nudy’s Cafe (Paoli) Cost: $
For my wrap, side salad, and coffee it was $15.

Overall Thoughts/Would I Come back to Nudy’s Cafe?
I liked Nudy’s Cafe and I would go back. There are a lot of different breakfast and lunch options. I appreciate the specials too.

Bandwagon Diner (Toms River)

Bandwagon Diner (Toms River, NJ)

Recently the owner of New Jersey isn’t boring, Cyd, and myself met at another diner in Toms River. We’ve been to a few Toms River diners, a few months ago; we met at the Fast Break Diner as well as the Four Seasons.  We’ve been to over 20 diners together!  The Bandwagon Diner is a family owned diner that takes pride in the standard.

band wagon diner toms river

Bandwagon Diner Atmosphere: B
The atmosphere of the Bandwagon Diner is stereotypical of many diners down the shore. It looks rustic and beachy. The inside is a bit outdated but still decent. There are several booths, tables, and a full-length bar. Plus, it has pink curtains.  It could use an update, but it was clean, which is what matters.

Bandwagon Diner Coffee: B
There was nothing unusual or unique, but it was hot. The waitress refilled it a few times too.

band wagon diner toms river

Bandwagon Diner Food: B
The Bandwagon Diner menu has everything from big breakfasts to lunch and dinner specials.  The family-operated restaurant serves the freshest breakfast around with a full breakfast menu.

A few of the Bandwagon Diner menu items that spoke to me were fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, juicy burgers. I was going to order off the Bandwagon specials menu with a wrap that contained  “chopped meat,” but since I had enough mystery meat in high school, I ordered the Mediterranean wrap.  It contained grilled chicken, mozzarella cheese, tomato, and spinach. In all the wrap was good but the tomato cooked spinach made it soggy.

I ordered a side salad which was nothing unique.  In all the meal was good, but it wasn’t my favorite.

Bandwagon Diner Service: B
The waitress was friendly, and our food came out quickly. In fact, the food was one of the fastest to come in out in any diner I’ve been too.  We were in and out of the diner within 30 minutes!

Bandwagon Diner Cost: $$
For my wrap, salad, coffee, the cost was about 12.

Overall Thoughts/Summary of the Bandwagon Diner:
I liked the Bandwagon Diner, and it is one of my more favorite diners of the area. I would go back.  The service was quick.
