Random Thoughts

Something I’ve learned in the last year is most of the time life is boring, and that’s okay. Sometimes there is nothing exciting going on that merits a blog post. I post the majority of days, but most are about running and training and, of course, diner reviews. I haven’t posted about personal life in a few weeks, and that’s because I’ve just been boring.  While I have other interests outside of running, for the most part, it is a running-oriented blog.  I’ve been racing so much that between racing and training posts, half of my blog week is filled!

In thinking out loud, my day consists of I going for a run, going to work and then coming home watching TV and sleeping. Lather, rinse, repeat with a few a diner dates in there too.

Here are a few random blurbs:

Music I’ve been enjoying:
I recently downloaded a Ke$ha remix CD, and I love it. The music is fun to listen to while running.  If you are looking for something fast, slightly vulgar and pop…this is your CD.

Running Shoe Rotation:
I’ve gotten a few questions about my running shoe choices Right now I’m currently running in these:
Saucony Triumph ISO 2 (majority of runs)
Saucony Zealot (warm up and cool downs, occasional weekly run)
Altra Paradigm 1.5 (once a week)
Nike Pegasus (sporadically 1-2X per week…review to come)
Saucony A6 (racing)
That is my current shoe rotation.

TV Shows I’m Watching:
America’s Next Top Model: I’ve watched every season of ANTM, and I’m sad this is supposedly the last season. Now what I will do?
Bar Rescue
Restaurant Impossible

What’s been going on life wise?
Honestly like I said, I’ve just been running, working and getting ready for the Philadelphia Marathon weekend. Not only for myself but with work too. We’ve been a little bit busier with the end of cross country season as well as the end of North East marathon season.

Yesterday I opted to run a 5k on base instead of doing my “regular” one-mile repeats. I’ve always wanted to get a turkey from a turkey trot and the stars aligned.  I ran a 19:30 and felt completely awful.  I’ll probably do a race recap since it was technically a race but, in summary, it was windy, my legs were still sore from my deep tissue massage, but I still had a good time.

VMA Talk

I’m not sure if I have an excess amount of time right now or I was legitimately into the VMA’s this year.  My gym has a “current music videos” section on the cardio machines so I had actually seen all the nominees.  Since I had nothing better to do on Sunday night, I decided to watch.  While watching I jotted down my thoughts of the night.  I’ve always thought the VMA’s was more about entertainment versus music quality.

Then I went to bed because it way past my old lady background.  Imagine my joy when I got to read it back on Monday morning.

Incase you didn’t know, the Video music awards gives awards to various artists based on their video’s corresponding to recent hits. While their music must be decent, this award show is all about the videos and how interesting, crazy and entertaining they can be.

Is the song “Anaconda” the greatest song you’ve ever heard?

No, but is the video probably one of the most interesting?

These days a lot of songs are more visually interesting than musically creative.

Just to preface: I have no musical experience.  I am tone deaf and all of these opinions are my own. I have no credentials to be judging music videos or music…

Some thoughts I had while watching:

Gosh I just love Swift more and more.  (I’m currently obsessed with her newest song: Shake It Off)

I loved her onesie (I think I was the only one who did) but I loved her performance outfit too.

It's so bright I forgot my pants...but I'll shield my eyes.

My exact thoughts during her performance:

Oh my gosh, did she mean to panic like that mid performance.  Quick, ask the twitters what is going on.  Oh okay good she did to not jump off the stage and take a dig at Nicki Minaj.  #womancrush

VMA Taylor swift

During the VMAS, I concluded Taylor and I must be twins because…well she dances like I dance…Really awkwardly and all the time. .

Thoughts during Nicki Manaj’s performance

OH. MY. GOSH. I guess Anaconda was real life.

I don’t think they sterilized this waxing cream at the nail salon…if you know what I mean.

She has really pretty hair but I guess no one really looks at that.

Oh no, I bet she totally meant to have to hold her dress…yeah I don’t believe you didn’t have time.

WTF is that white thing she is wearing (With Usher).  Nicki, no, just no.

Thoughts about Miley Cyrus winning best overall video:

She really did come in like a wrecking ball.  I mean I do have to say, there isn’t anyone that hasn’t seen it.  I think it’s well deserved.

I had no idea she was so involved with that but that is truly great.  She has grown up from the twerking of last year.  Good for her.  (I was sad she said she was retiring the twerk.)

That is really awesome she wanted that guy to accept the award for her.  My views for Miley changed a lot during that video.

Beyonce closing:

Personally I think they gave her too much time to close the show.  It was at least 1/3 of the actual aired portion.  I’m happy for Beyonce and I do think she is an incredible performer but I would have liked to see other awards being given out.

Weekend Warrior

Wow what a crazy weekend.  Last weekend was one of those weekends where you look back and say…um where did that go?  How is already Wednesday?

Rewind to an entire week ago, I went home on Wednesday evening.  The drive from NJ normally takes about 6 hours.  It took me abut 6 hours but it felt like it was never ending.  I thought I might be really close to VA…then realized I was just getting onto the NJ turnpike  (ie: 20 minutes into my drive).

Tim’s parents arrived Thursday night.  His mom was coming to look at wedding dresses with me and his dad was coming along for the ride.  Since Tim and I are getting married down in Norfolk, VA we wanted to show them more of the area, venue, etc.  It turned out to be a jam packed but really amazing weekend.

Friday we looked at wedding dresses.

Saturday morning we did the Strider Mile (Tim’s father, myself and dadLOLZ). It was a lot of fun.

After the race (eating and showering), we went and explored downtown Norfolk.  I cannot tell you the last time I was there for something other than a road race.  I went to Nauticus way back in summer camp.  The last thing you want to do in summer camp is learn anything.  My memories of Nauticus were “I want to nap on the bus”.  We probably went to Nauticus 20 times during camp…which is 19 too many.  This time we went and it was a lot of fun.

It was enjoyable to go again 10 years later.  Dad gave us some cool information about the ship there (DAD spent 30 years in the Navy so knows a bit about that…).  We walked around downtown afterwords but then it got extremely hot.

That night we went to a Kenny Loggins concert (sings Footloose).  It was really enjoyable.

My parents and I

My parents and I…Can you tell it’s past my bedtime?

Sadly Tim’s parents had to leave on Sunday morning.  I had a great time and I’m sure I will see them soon.  I’m lucky to be so close with Tim’s family as well (of course)as my parents.  It was a great weekend with all four of them and we were only missing one person to make it perfect.

I left VA on Tuesday and headed back home to NJ (still weird to say). My orginal plan had been to leave on Monday but I was so exhausted that was not happening.  I could barely keep my eyes open on Sunday, let alone pack.  I could have packed on Monday and left later in the day…but then I found out I could hang out with Katie if I left Tuesday.

Katie and I

So that was more of an incentive to be lazy on Sunday and most of Monday as well.

Whew that was tiring just typing it out.  After a nice long week long (very productive) vacation, it’s nice to sleep in my own bed.  Running shoes and feet await me at work.

Questions for you:

So old, but how was your weekend?  Any plans this weekend?

What was the last concert you went too?

Running Music

A common question I get is “do you listen to music while running?”

The answer is yes if I am running alone I listen to music about 90% of the time.  The other 10% is normally because my phone is not charged and so it’s sitting on the charger.  I also listen to pandora on top hits too.

I love running to music.  It makes the time go by faster and plus it gives me a great way to learn more song lyrics.  I actually used to listen to ebooks in college and got a lot of reading done that way.  Now I don’t have studying to do so as an old crusty graduate I listen to music.

I enjoy listening to current hits and top 40.  I’m not ashamed of it.  Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Kesha, Nicki Minaj…I love listening to them all.

I compiled a list of my top 25 most played songs in the last month.  Judge me if you want…(I actually just screenshoted my itunes top 25).  As you can see I really enjoy a lot of remixes.  I love the original versions of each song too but I like to relive my college bar days and listen to remixed versions while running…

It’s important to note that recently I downloaded the Iggy Azalea CD.  Although she hasn’t currently made it onto my top played, I can assure you in the last week I’v only been listening to that CD.

My two favorite songs from her CD:

Work (Warning vulgar)

Change your life (warning also vulgar)

You should probably go download them.  After I went and found them on youtube, I listened to them another few times…
