Catching Up

It’s hard to believe it’s already the last day of the month.  After Monday, this week flew by!

The first half of the week I spent working and cleaning up.  I’ve slowly started to get rid of items I am not using.  I’ve used the idea “if I haven’t used the item in the last year, I probably won’t”.  While I’m not excited about moving, I am excited to clean and declutter my house.

The second half was spent relaxing and enjoying life.

Yesterday, we decided to try the famous Ritz Seafood in Vorhees, NJ.  The Ritz was on the “Best Thing I’ve Ever Ate” for their Coconut Cream Pie.  I will say it was one of the best pies I’ve eaten and I’m a dense cake girl at heart.

The pie has toasted coconut and Lindt chocolate shavings on top.  I would have to agree it’s one of the best desserts I’ve had!

Life Updates

It is hard to believe we are through another week of the summer.  It’s strange to think how fast this summer is going.  A month ago, schools were getting out.  In another month, they’ll be starting again.

This week was unique for me.  My work schedule is beginning to change and I enjoyed a lot of unscheduled and unplanned fun.

Fridays have become a collage of random thoughts on LOLZ blog.  Some weeks I post articles, some weeks I post life updates and some weeks I don’t post…Hashtag so random.

Random Week Activities: 

I went to the track!  I’ve done a few track workouts before but not in a VEERRRRRRYYYYYY long time (think 3+ years).  I was pleasantly surprised with how much fun I had.

I went back to brunette.  Some people pull off blonde hair color well but I’m not one of them.  I don’t regret dying my hair but I don’t see myself ever going back to blonde.

I wanted to wait at least a month before getting it redone because it was such a chemical bomb to my hair…

Two days later and I’m already much happier.

I finally finished my DIY project of repainting my small night stand.  It’s my first DIY project and I think it turned out well.

Power Outage, Reads and Music

This week I had a lot planned that didn’t happen.  The week from hell…o is finally over (maybe because I still don’t have power).  I had a lot to do on Tuesday and Wednesday that quickly went on the back burner when we get a huge storm in New Jersey and Philadelphia.  There was a tornado that touched down and my power was knocked out.

There are two types of weather patterns I am absolutely terrified of:

1. Tornados
2. Thunderstorms

The storm knocked out my power.  The same evening I got a migraine so I just called it a night and went to bed.  So on Tuesday I had one of the most miserable days of the year.  You have to have the good days to have the bad days right?

Since I’m not cleaning in the dark and 90 degree house, I spent time reading in local coffee shops.  I did find a few articles for the week.  They said the power would come back on Wednesday at 5am, then Thursday at 4pm and now the latest is today at 12pm.  I’ll post a bunch of dancing emojis when it does.

Catching Up and a Few Articles

If your week has gone anything like mine, it’s been SAS.  Slow as…well you get it.  This weekend went from boring to exciting in the matter of one day.  The previous week was spent catching up on life, work and everything in between.  I was lucky to hang out with my coworker and go to a new Mediterranean restaurant on Tuesday evening.  The restaurant, Zaffron in downtown Haddonfield is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone in Haddonfield (and their primarily location in Center City Philadelphia).

Then on Wednesday I was able to meet Liz (my fellow 5k runner) for coffee at a local coffee shop.  We ended up chatting for about 2 hours.  It was so nice to talk and not be running.

Will Hall ever finish another successful marathon?

We might never know why Ryan Hall decided to drop out of the LA marathon.

Will he ever finish another marathon?

Will he ever come close to his American Record?

The last few years, Ryan has been under attack by almost everyone.  Since he performance of 2:04.58 in Boston, he has dropped out of several races, or finished disappointed.   He hasn’t had a great distance race (for him, it’s all relative) since his performance at Boston.

To preface this post, Ryan Hall is one of my favorite elite runners.  I also am not (or never will be) an athlete of that caliber.  I don’t rely on running as a source of income and I’m grateful for that.  It would be a very hard job, career and I applaud elite runners who make it work.

For the majority of racers, we don’t rely on running for paychecks.  If we have a bad race we complain for a while then move on.  We don’t worry our sponsors will drop us or that we will be on a strict budget (due to lack of income) for a while.  We have a bad race and move on.

Was it smart of him to drop out of this marathon?  Should he have just “gutted it out”?  Possibly finishing above 2:20 or even 2:30? 

Ryan Hall has dropped out of several marathons he started since Boston:

In 2012, he DNFed at the London Olympics.

In 2013, he ran no marathons.  He was scheduled to run both Boston and NYCM.

In 2014, he ran a 2:17 at Boston and placed 20th. 

In 2015, he DNFed the LA marathon.

For elite athlete distance runners, it is often smarter to withdraw from a race early.  This allows the body to recover faster and prepare for another marathon sooner.  When an elite athlete knows they are extremely off pace, they withdraw…recover and begin preparing for a race sooner.  I think this is wise and tactical.  Why finish a race they know is not going to get them where they need too? They can recover and live to race another day…sooner.

My question is Ryan has not done this.  He dropped out of one race and doesn’t start another.  He hasn’t saved himself for another great race because he hasn’t run another one.

Another point to consider is that it was hot at the LA marathon.  When you prepare for a race, train well, appropriately taper and do everything right training wise…it stinks to have the weather not cooperate.  Am I saying this is the reason he dropped out?  No…lots of runners finished the race that day…including his wife.

In my nonelite opinion, Hall needs to take more time and get back to shorter distances. Like a newer runner just work on shorter races for a while before getting back into the marathon.

That being said I’m not elite, not a coach and haven’t had any marathon races I’m particularly proud of.  This is just my opinion…

Ryan Hall said “You can only have one best day of your life”…maybe he has peaked at Boston a few years ago and we are all having a hard time accepting this.
