Real Life Adventures

The last few weeks have been a busy time for both my husband and I.  For me, work has picked up because of cross country season and marathon season!  I don’t foresee having a lot of extra time for a few months but I don’t mind.  Considering my husband has also been gone 3 out of 4 months we have been married, I also want to enjoy being a newlywed.  I still have personal time but far less of it!

For our date night last week, we went to the Creperie Beau Monde in Philadelphia.  Crepe Beau Monde was on the Best Thing I’ve Ever Ate for their Crepes.  So of course we had to go.  For an appetizer we split the smoked salmon and leek crepe.  I love that they split it for us and made it easy.  If we tried to cut it ourselves, the melted cheese would have squirted halfway across the restaurant.

For dessert we split the apple, toasted almond and creme with hazelnut ice cream.  It was one one of the best desserts I’ve ever had!  Everything about the crepe was delicious and I wanted to eat 10.  It is a top contender for the Best Thing I’ve Ever Ate.

Finally, the coffee creamer dispenser was one of the most unique creamer dispensers we have come across.  It is a cow and the milk poured out from the nose.  I could not stop laughing!

My blog is not known to document my own personal cooking.  That is because I’m not that great at it.  I don’t think my meals are noteworthy.  At our house we tend to eat very simple: a meat, potato and vegetable.   Something we have been working on lately is cooking together.  Last night we roasted a spaghetti squash (one of my favorite vegetables!).

We used this recipe but also added garlic and butter.   Then we topped with goat cheese, parmesan cheese grilled chicken and roasted tomatoes. We also served with a side salad. It is simple, easy and delicious.

The other major cooking adventure we are pursing is homemade ice cream.  We bought an ice cream maker last month and have been experimenting with different recipes.  Right now we are using variations of this recipe.  The last time we made ice cream we also grilled fresh peaches and it was perfect.  I never knew making ice cream was that easy.

So there you have it.  I haven’t gone too crazy but have been enjoying cooking and going to other restaurants that aren’t diners.  😉

WIAW with the Parents

I never really intend for my blog to be have very many whiney posts but it is realistic updates  of what is going on in my life, whether it’s pancakes, running or life in general.  There haven’t been a lot of life in general posts because quite frankly I haven’t had a lot to report.  I’m boring…sue me.  I don’t have a lot of friends…sue me.   I don’t go out binge drinking with undergradates that I’m trying to teach them alternatives to that culture…sue me.  What am I going to recap each weekend…hanging out and eating popcorn while gossiping on a Friday night with my housemate?  I know it probably thrills you.  I can’t say it’s completely being busys fault but I can say that I haven’t really made the biggest effort to stay busy

I just quite frankly don’t care and I don’t plan to stay in the arctic tundra for my entire life.  I really love my job (and educating students…that’s a post in itself) but outside of that…I don’t know.   Long story short, I’m in a bit of a funk.

So yes, this WIAW with my parents has kind of turned into a bit of a life update which I’m fine with.  As long as I attach a photo of ice cream, I’ll get everyone to just comment on how good ice cream is right?  Moving on, I think part of the reason that I’ve had a hard time here is that the town itself is not runner friendly.

Not runner friendly meaning the terrain and packed snow make it impossible to run outside.  There aren’t many people that run…in Syracuse sure but that is 45 minutes away and if I plan to never eat again I guess I could make that drive everyday.  Plus it’s obviously just a touch to cold to be outdoors anyways…Running isn’t my whole life though and that’s fine.  I can mindlessly watch TV.

While I’ve made great friends, most of my friends aren’t here.  Though I’m not really sure where they are.  Who exactly am I considering my friends that aren’t here, my family and Tim?  I mean I guess both technically are.

For me personally, I find February to be an overall funky month.  Last year at this time I was just recovering from a broken arm.  We did have a warmer winter last year (compared to the winter 2 years ago when it was -30 quite a few times (good thing my hair froze multiple times to and from swim practice) This year it’s much more snowy and winter like but at least not that cold.   Some people might enjoy the winter I’m not one of them…I just find February a month to get through.  Though it’s the shortest month, it sure feels like the longest.

Real Life Hanging Out

So it all happened exactly how I would not like.  I was supposed to go visit the lovely Rachel (my sister from another mister) at my alma mater town on Saturday.  I was pumped, jazzed, and everything.  Until I got an email saying I needed to do a few things that morning until noon.  So I had to wait and then drive up at noon.  No matter, I still made it.

The way up there was rather uneventful thank goodness (about a 2 hour drive).  When I got to Potsdam, we went to a craft fair (which of course we were late…I’m notoriously late for everything) and people were starting to take their things down.  There was an ungodly amount of placemats there though (random).

So we proceeded to go on a four mile shakeout run with her dog.  Which was fantastic, because Rachel is fast and god knows I didn’t want to slow her down too much…at least with the dog I could blame it on him.  During our run, we saw deer and her dog started chasing them straight into the river.   They literally got within five feet of us.  Scary.

Then after a nice four miler, we went out on a date to one of my favorite restaurants if the area.  I’ve blogged about it before I think (I know so because I found a photo of the salad I always get).   North Country goat cheese is to die for (so good).

Nevermind my eyes are closed…everyone knows the real star of the photo is the coffee poster in the back.

And ice cream.  If you’ve never been to a Stewarts gas station…their ice cream is number 2 to no one.  I had red velvet (nevermind it was 30 degrees out).

And thus next weekend you will see more photos of Rachel because I you know…plan to see her then too…don’t mind my stalkerish ways.

WIAW Timetable

It’s time for my favorite part of the week, WIAW.  These have become a staple of my blog the last few weeks, which surprises me but it’s all good.  Speaking of food, I updated my recipe page.  You can take a gander but it’s mostly just pancakes and waffle ideas. 


Last week, I was asked to include my whole day including workouts and work and everything.   I don’t mind doing that once in a great while but having a timetable of my day seems so boring (to me I guess because I do it everyday). 

6:00 am wakeup and eat breakfast, read blogs…whatever.

I really wish my gym didn’t open at 7, but it does.  If it opened at 6, I’d brave the cold and go before so I didn’t have to shower and go straight to work.

7:30 Gym time

Not sure why I was in the mood for eggs between the gym and work…but I was…

I spend an hour on the elliptical followed by showering and being a real girl and get to work at 9.  (My job is odd hours sometimes and it requires me to work nights, weekends, whatever depending on the day.  Sometimes I work 8:30-4:30.  Some days I work 12-8). 


Work 9-4:30.  I’m not going to go into a lot of details about my work but it was pretty busy.  Obviously during this time I had lunch.  We went to the dining hall which was pretty good.  I have come to terms that I would rather go to the dining hall then eat at one of the al la carte places because the dining has a lot of more healthy options and I can choose what I want…versus being stuck with one item.  I got a random assortment of whatever was going in that photo.  Asparagus is so expensive in real life so I practically got all of it like no big deal… 

If you didn’t know, I work on a college campus in the health center and they pay for me to eat lunch there most days.  As well as we have meetings there or I meet with students in a more comfortable place there.   So I eat at lot on the actual campus.  (Which my undergrad had better food, but this is fine too ;))

Then from 4:45-6 I spend another hour at the gym.  That particular day I was feeling pretty good (also still somewhat full from the dining hall). I had a nice and pretty moderate workout.

From 6-7, I grilled up some steak and whatever vegetables I had in my fridge.  O days I go to the dining hall I get more then enough of my fair share of veggies because I can eat as many as I want and then normally have more for dinner.  I cannot say that for days I don’t but I’m making best use of my money right?  Vegetables are expensive and I’d rather spend it on gas station coffee.

7-10 is spent as personal time.  Honestly, I never really accomplish anything in those three hours.  Sometimes I call my parents, read more blogs, watch trashy TV…if I need to answer a few emails with work I will…but other then that I don’t.

This particular night I spent a good portion wasting time looking at Halloween Costumes.  Don’t worry it’s real life.

WIAW: Since Whenever I Posted My Last WIAW

I feel like as bloggers we must think that our lives are so interesting all of the time.  That if we have down time, how the freak will you ever blog if your life is…dare I say it “normal”. 

Sometimes I wonder if as a blogger, people really think I live some exciting and always joyful life that I can plug an interesting life post everyday.  Or that I’m motivated to post everyday because my life is just that fabulous.

Well my life is fabulous but I must say, even when my blogging has been lacking. So with that I’ll just post some photos of my eats.  Not sure how recent they are and time stamping them won’t do anything for you or me.  I will tell you though what I’ve been enjoying since returning to eating by myself.

Actually that is a dirty lie,I have been eating a lot on the campus with people I’m working with.  I promise I’ll do a full internship post soon but why do one when I haven’t been there long enough to accurately judge.  Seeing as I haven’t done a WIAW in a few weeks is all I’ve eaten since last time…
