West Essex Diner (Fairfield)

West Essex Diner (Fairfield, NJ)

Recently I was at the West Essex Diner in Fairfield, NJ. I was in the area and googled diners closeby, and it came up. I’ve been to Fairfield a few times, and I wondered why I hadn’t ever discovered the West Essex Diner. Once I got there, it was abruptly clear. The West Essex Diner takes the place of the Versaille Diner which I went to last year. I didn’t “love” the Versaille Diner, so truthfully I wasn’t surprised it closed. I did laugh, when I got there, and I was like “I’ve been to this location before” and realized it had closed and reopened.

West Essex Diner Atmosphere: A
The West Essex Diner is clean and modern. The outside is welcoming. When I was there last, it was under construction, and I remember watching construction workers do work on the outside. The inside is clean, bright, and looks exactly like what you picture in a NJ diner.

West Essex Diner Coffee: B
The coffee at the West Essex Diner was brewed hot and fresh, but there wasn’t anything unique or unusual about it. It was terrible but not surprising either, somewhere in the middle as diner coffee goes.

West Essex Diner Food: B
The West Essex Diner menu has everything you can imagine. There are pages of breakfast options, different lunch and dinner options and a full page of specials too.

I decided to order the “Heart Attack Burger.” It was two patties with American cheese, grilled onions, and mushrooms. It also came with fries. The burger itself was good. It was a lot of burger, and there was plenty of grease that dripped off. The fries were bland, but they weren’t terrible. I would order it again.

Service: B
When we arrived, the West Essex Diner was about 1/3 filled. We were sat in an awkward location and waited for a long time for someone to come over. It became clear that none of the servers knew we were in their section. Our waiter was friendly, and our drinks were refilled often. I think I blinked and our food came out, in fact, it came out in less time than it took to take our orders.

Cost: $
For my burger and coffee, the cost was $17.

Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back to the West Essex Diner?
I think the West Essex Diner is a much improvement of the Versaille Diner and I would go back if I’m in the area. They have a lot of fun breakfast options that I would like to try.

Diner of Los Gatos

Diner of Los Gatos (Los Gatos, CA)

Before making it to San Fransico and the bay area, we decided to stop at the Diner of Los Gatos. It felt like midnight to me, but it was only 5:30 pm. When we arrived, there were only a few parties in the diner which was nice because I was hungry.

Diner of Los Gatos Atmosphere: A

The Diner of Los Gatos looks like a diner from both the outside and the inside. When you drive by the Diner of Los Gatos, you immediately see a somewhat out of place diner (in a good way).

The entire inside is chrome, with red booths, tables, and a lot of photos of Elvis. There is a giant cardboard cutout at the front, that I thought was a real person, many many times.

Diner of Los Gatos Coffee: B

The coffee was hot and fresh, but nothing too exciting. It was good, but there was nothing to write home about.

Diner of Los Gatos Food: A

The Diner of Los Gatos menu has a small selection listed on a trifold laminated menu.

Some of the Diner of Los Gatos menu items that stuck out were:

Build your own burger
Greek Feta Cheese tossed in a light dressing with a cup of soup
Eggs benedict and poached eggs with hollandaise sauce and has browns
Grilled chicken breast

We were hungry, so we decided to order the Greek platter. It came with gyro meat, pita bread, french fries, tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce. It came only a minute before our meals, so we weren’t able to enjoy it as much as I hoped. In all, it was good. I’ve never had french fries including in a greek platter, but sure why not?

For my entree, I ordered the Garlic Burger. We were only an hour or so, from the Garlic Captial of the Country, so it seemed appropriate. The Garlic burger was massive, and there was plenty of garlic. It was cooked perfectly, and I have no complaints. It was one of the better burgers I’ve had.

Diner of Los Gatos Service: B

It took longer than anticipated to order our food, but once we did, it came out quickly. I would have preferred to enjoy my appetizer versus taking one bite, and the entree was there, but there isn’t a need to complain about food coming out too fast.

Diner of Los Gatos Cost: $

For my entree, appetizer, and coffee, the cost was $30.

Overall Thoughts/Summary of the Diner of Los Gatos:

I liked the Diner of Los Gatos, and it was a great stop just south of San Fransico. I would go back again.

Linden House Diner & Grill

Linden House Diner & Grill (Linden)

Recently I was at the Linden House Diner & Grill in Linden, NJ. I was hungry so decided to stop.

Linden House Diner & Grill Atmosphere: B
The Linden House Diner & Grill is different from many diners. It’s a small, local, diner. There are plenty of cute little coffee designs on the wall. It almost reminds me more of a bistro versus a diner. It’s a locals place, and I enjoyed that vibe.

Linden House Diner & Grill Coffee: A
The waitress brought plenty of refills. She brewed a fresh pot and made sure drinks were always refilled.

Linden House Diner & Grill Food: A
The Linden House Diner & Grill menu is not as big as all diners, but there are still plenty of options. There were breakfast, lunch, and dinner options but not a 100-page menu like many diners. It has a reasonable menu.

I had no idea what I wanted but ended up ordering a burger. I can’t remember the exact name of the burger, but it was topped with bacon and cheese. In all, it was a surprisingly good burger. The sweet potato fries were one of the best I’ve had in a long time! Nothing crazy to write home about but a good burger and I have no complaints.

Linden House Diner & Grill Service: A
The waitress was very friendly and kept our beverages refilled. She always made sure we had everything we needed. One thing I also enjoyed is it was clear the staff was all friends. They would chat about random things and all got along. It’s always nice to see that! To top it off, our food came out quickly.

Linden House Diner & Grill Cost: $
For my burger and coffee, the cost was $14.

Overall Thoughts/Would I come back to the Linden House Diner & Grill?
I was pleasantly surprised with the Linden House Diner % Grill, and it was a nice surprise.

Red Bank Diner

Red Bank Diner (Red Bank, NJ)

I was in the Red Bank area around 4;30 pm on a weekday. Anyone that knows New Jersey traffic knows that 4 pm starts bumper to bumper, everywhere. I live about 90 minutes from Red Bank and I while I wasn’t starving around 4:30, I didn’t particularly want to wait until probably 6:30-7 when I would actually get home. It seemed like a good idea to find a diner and stop. I didn’t know much about Red Bank, but I remembered I had eaten at Toast last year and had a good experience. I stumbled upon the Red Bank Diner and made my way there.

Red Bank Diner Atmosphere: B
The Red Bank Diner is unique. It’s located on the main road and a local business. It’s not a standalone building and attached to several other restaurants. The inside is clean and modern. It has several booths and a small bar. It reminds me more of a local restaurant than a diner, but that is okay!

Red Bank Diner Coffee: A
The coffee at the Red Bank Diner was good. What gave it an “A” is our server kept it refilled the entire time. There was never a moment that my cup came close to being empty (and believe me, I can drink coffee).

Red Bank Diner Food: B
The Red Bank Diner menu has all of the usual diner favorites. There are plenty of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. When I went, I wasn’t starving, but I was hungry. It took me a while to decide what I wanted.

A few items from the Red Bank Diner menu that caught my eye:

eggs benedict
cheese steak
grilled chicken and french fries

I randomly decided to order the St. Louis Burger. I had no idea why or even what it came with. Honestly, I just did it by name and hmm: I’ve never been to St. Loius. It was topped with cheese, mushrooms, and mozzarella cheese. It also came with “cajun” fries which to be honest were just curly fries.

The burger was delicious and while the “cajun fries” were good curly fries, I didn’t taste much of the flavor I anticipated.

Red Bank Diner Service: A
The server at the Red Bank Diner was great. As I mentioned, he always kept my beverages (water and coffee) filled, and there was never a moment that I felt as if I needed anything. Not only that, but my food came out quickly. I could not have asked for a better experience.

Red Bank Diner Cost: $
For my coffee and meal, the cost was $12.

Overall Thoughts/Summary of the Red Bank Diner:
I enjoyed the Red Bank Diner and had a great experience. It’s a nice local diner on the main street and I have no complaints! The town is worth the stop, even just to drive through.

Brick Diner

Brick Diner (Brick, NJ)

Recently I went to the Brick Diner in Brick. I wasn’t originally supposed to be in the area but found myself in Brick around dinner time. There are a few diners I want to go too, and the Brick Diner looked like a great option.

Atmosphere: A
The Brick Diner has a big sign out front to indicate the diner. It’s not a big metallic diner like a few others in the area. The inside of the Brick Diner has everything you want in a diner: a full-length bar, booths and plenty of tables.

Coffee: C
The coffee was decent, but it was lukewarm. I didn’t hate it and it wasn’t the worst but it had a lot of room for improvement…IE hotter.

Food: C
The Brick Diner menu has most anything you could want or need in a diner. There are plenty of menu options with breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. There is nothing unusual, but there is nothing left out. I ordered a mushroom cheeseburger that came with fries, coleslaw, and a pickle. It was an average meal. The mushrooms and cheese were both somewhat rubbery. The burger was ok, not the best or worst. In all, average.

Service: B
The waitress was friendly and refilled our beverages as needed.

Cost: $
For my burger and coffee, the cost was $11.

Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back to the Brick Diner?
The Brick Diner was an okay stop. Not my favorite or least favorite. If I’m in the area, I might stop again. If you’re looking for a stereotypical NJ diner, the Brick Diner is great.
