Are you curious about the 2026 NYC Marathon Course Change? Read this honest review and run your best race yet. The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon will use a revised route through the Bronx, the first course adjustment in 15 years. I was surprised to learn this isn’t bigger news! The change affects a short stretch around miles 20 and 21 in Mott Haven, while the rest of the 26.2-mile route from Staten Island to Central Park remains in place.
Race day is Sunday, November 1, 2026. If you have already studied an older NYC Marathon course map, the Bronx is the section to review again.
What Is Changing on the 2026 NYC Marathon Course?
Runners will still enter the Bronx over the Willis Avenue Bridge and leave via the Madison Avenue Bridge. The revised course keeps runners on Alexander Avenue farther north, sends them onto East 141st Street and Third Avenue, then reconnects with East 138th Street before the Madison Avenue Bridge. The former path included additional turns around Morris Avenue, East 140th Street and Rider Avenue. For anyone racing, two fewer corners after 20 miles are welcome. You still have Fifth Avenue and Central Park ahead, but I am never going to complain about fewer late-race turns…or really any turns.
Why Did the NYC Marathon Route Change?
The decision was driven by access concerns in Mott Haven rather than an attempt to make the marathon faster. Residents near the Patterson Houses had raised concerns about race-day closures making it harder to reach businesses near the old course. NBC New York reported that the affected block includes a Western Beef supermarket and a 24-hour laundromat used by people in the neighborhood. The Patterson Houses complex contains nearly 1,800 apartments.
Gothamist reported that New York Road Runners began reviewing the Bronx portion of the marathon in 2024. NYRR examined how the event affected local resources, spoke with the community and developed two possible revisions before the updated route was selected. For runners, you have a smoother path through the Bronx and for residents, the change keeps key businesses easier to reach during one of New York City’s biggest annual events.
Will the New NYC Marathon Course Be Faster?
I would not change a goal time and many people will not notice. The New York City Marathon still includes five bridges, the late climb along Fifth Avenue and the rolling finish through Central Park. Removing two turns near mile 20 may help the flow of the race, especially in a crowded field, but it does not remake the character of the course. NYRR’s current course materials remain the best reference for race-day planning.

A Course Change During a Big NYC Marathon Anniversary
In 2026, New York Road Runners is celebrating 50 years since the marathon expanded into a five-borough race. The five-borough version debuted in 1976 after the marathon’s earlier editions were held in Central Park. The Bronx update is small compared with that transformation, yet it gives 2026 runners one new section to learn before November 1.
