Diadora GARA CARBON 3 Review

Advertisements

I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Diadora Gara Carbon 3. I’ve been a huge fan of Diadora for quite some time. When I worked at RunningCo. of Haddonfield, we were lucky enough to be one of the first running stores to bring them in. Since then, it’s been fun to watch the brand grow and evolve into what it is today.

I wanted to try one of the Diadora carbon-plated fast shoes, but the opportunity hadn’t presented itself, so I was excited when it did. Diadora has always used premium materials compared to other running shoe brands, and their shoes have always been priced higher. At $320, you may wonder if the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 is worth it, and that’s probably the most common question I’ve gotten. I do think so, and I think you can tell the craftsmanship of the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 compared to other brands.

Diadora Gara Carbon 3 FAQ:

Is the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 worth it?

That depends on what you want out of a super shoe. The Gara Carbon 3 is well built, feels more stable than most, and doesn’t have that overly soft or unpredictable ride. It also costs over $300, which puts it at the top of the price range. If you care about a controlled ride and durability, it is a great option. If you want the most aggressive, propulsive shoe there are options that feel faster right away.

How does the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 compare to Nike Vaporfly?

The biggest difference is how they ride. The Vaporfly feels softer and more aggressive, especially when you pick up the pace. The Gara Carbon 3 feels firmer and more stable, and it’s easier to stay in rhythm over longer efforts. It doesn’t give the same “pop” as the Vaporfly, but it also doesn’t feel as unstable late in a race.

Is the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 a good marathon racing shoe?

Yes, especially if you prefer a steady, controlled effort. The geometry and carbon plate help you roll through your stride without feeling overly aggressive. For runners who fade late in the marathon because their shoes feel too unstable or too soft, this can be a better option.

Does the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 run true to size?

Length is true to size, but the fit runs narrow. The upper has a structured feel but it doesn’t leave a lot of extra room. If you have wider feet or tend to size up in race shoes, it’s something to pay attention to.

How long do carbon plated running shoes last?

Most carbon-plated shoes last somewhere between 50–100 miles, depending on how you use them. The Gara Carbon 3 feels like it might hold up a bit longer than average because of the outsole coverage but it’s still a race-day shoe. It’s not something you should use for daily mileage.

Now, let’s get into a Diadora Gara Carbon 3 shoe review.

Quick Facts

Diadora Gara Carbon 3 Upper and Fit

The Diadora Gara Carbon 3 upper uses what Diadora calls a Matrix Mesh with carbon fiber reinforcement. That sounds like a lot, but on foot it just feels structured and secure.

There’s more substance here than most race shoes. It doesn’t disappear on your foot, and the lockdown through the midfoot and heel feels deliberate. If you’ve struggled with sloppy race-day uppers, this is going to feel better.

That said, it runs narrow. I wear a women’s size 11 or men’s 9.5. When I first tried it on, I thought I had accidentally ordered a women’s size 9.5 (which I have done before). It was very tight. It took me a couple of runs to “break it in,” which you shouldn’t need to do. Anyway, they are tight.

The best running shoe uppers disappear off your feet, and once you order the right size, the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 does that. It’s comfortable and breathable, and I do appreciate that there is more structure than almost any other racing shoe I know of.

As far as fit, as mentioned, in running shoes I wear anywhere between a women’s 10–11 wide. The best fit for me would probably be a men’s size 10. It’s a shoe I like, but I encourage you to try it on first so you can get the right size for you.

Diadora Gara Carbon 3 Ride

The midsole is where the magic happens, and the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 is a fun racer. Diadora uses ANIMA PBX foam, which is a supercritical foam designed to be lighter and more responsive than their previous compounds. They claim around a 55% increase in rebound and a significant reduction in weight compared to traditional EVA.

There’s also a full-length carbon plate embedded in thermoset resin. The goal is to keep the structure rigid enough so that the energy you’re putting down isn’t getting lost. That all adds up to a high energy return system. Diadora puts it in the 80–85% range depending on how it’s measured.

The plate is noticeable, but it’s not overly aggressive. The foam has some bounce, but it leans a little firmer, and I feel like you can feel the ground a bit more than other brands. Instead of feeling like you’re being launched forward, it feels like the shoe is helping you maintain speed once you’re there.

Outsole

There’s more outsole coverage than you see in most supershoes.

It feels like it’s built to last longer than a couple of races, which lines up with the rest of the brand. Diadora is priced higher because they use premium materials. Most carbon-plated shoes last between 50–100 miles, and I think the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 will last closer to that 100, if not a little higher.

As far as traction, they are fine. I wouldn’t be afraid to take them to a rainy race. I wouldn’t take them trail running, but you don’t need to worry about sliding around or making hairpin turns.

Where the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 Fits in a Rotation

The Diadora Gara Carbon 3 is designed for race day and hard efforts, and that is what I use it for. It doesn’t feel great at an easy pace, and that is partly because of the tighter-fitting upper and partly because of the firm race-day feel.

However, when you are running fast, you do feel like you are moving. I appreciate that the Diadora Gara Carbon 3 doesn’t feel like it’s really propelling you forward, but more enhancing the speed you already have. I’ve taken it out on long, hard tempo-style efforts as well as a few races and have been happy each time. For me, I think I enjoy it best as a 5K–half marathon shoe, and I appreciate that I can feel the ground a bit more than other super shoes.

Diadora Gara Carbon 3 Conclusion

I really like the Diadora Gara Carbon 3. I think the hard part for many people to get over is the fit, but once you find your right fit (which will be a half to full size bigger than your regular running shoe size), I think many people will enjoy racing in it. Especially if you want a super shoe without feeling like you are bouncing around.
