First Watch (Suffolk, VA)

Advertisements

For some, First Watch might not be a diner. It’s an exclusive breakfast and brunch spot, and it’s a chain. I’ve reviewed other chains, including Black Bear DinerThe Metro Diner, and Silver Diner. I decided to include First Watch because I’ve been to many spots with “diner” in the name and are less diner.

First Watch Atmosphere: B

The First Watch is open and modern. If you are looking for an upscale and modern diner, this is it. They have a fairly open floor plan with plenty of seating inside and outside. Both the inside and outside are bright.

Coffee: A

The coffee at First Watch was brewed hot and fresh. First Watch mentions they use specialty “Project Sunrise Coffee,” and it tastes good. Plus, they included a lot of creamer (which, if you know me, you know I love my coffee creamer).

First Watch Food: B

The First Watch menu is fairly large for a restaurant that only serves breakfast and lunch. They have plenty of options, including several types of pancakes, omelets, and sandwiches. You can see the full First Watch menu here.

I was craving pancakes, so I decided to order the lemon ricotta pancakes. The lemon ricotta pancakes came with fresh, whipped ricotta cheese to a multigrain batter. They are served as a mid-stack of two pancakes topped with marinated berries and creamy lemon curd. They mention the “pancakes are humongous,” but I wouldn’t necessarily say that. Are they more significant than average? Yes, but are they huge…not really. They were good, and I was glad I ordered them. I like lemon flavor and really enjoyed the lemon-flavored curd.

First Watch Service: A

The host at First Watch was pleasant, and the entire staff was nice. Despite there being a relatively long wait, the food was ready quickly. I have no complaints.

First Watch Cost: $

For my pancake and coffee, it was $15. While more expensive for diner food, it wasn’t the most expensive food I’ve had.

Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back?

I enjoyed First Watch and had a good experience. I think it’s a lovely spot before a race to get pancakes. I want to try other menu options like their power bowls! Everything sounded and looked good. I do appreciate the high-quality ingredients, and there are plenty of locations around the country.
