OC Fair Run 5k (20:40)

I’ve now run the OC Fair Run 5K four times, and in 2026, it was my slowest. At first, I blamed the heat, but I could tell something felt “weird” on race day…little did I know, I had bronchitis. I found that out the next day when I woke up and my chest was tight. Funny enough, it was on the random day I decided to publish the “should you run while you’re sick”Should You Run While Sick? Running With COVID, Flu, RSV, and a Common Cold blog post. Anyway.

Did I choose the most flattering photo…of course

Before the OC Fair Run 5K:

I didn’t feel bad before the OC Fair Run 5K, but I did feel off. We had a fun (and very hot) day at the Fair. I probably walked around a little more than you would want to the day before the race…but why not! I had entirely too much sushi the night before and went to bed stuffed. I regret nothing, but I’m telling you all that because it was not surprising that I woke up and “didn’t feel my best.” I wasn’t having any chest pain, though, just tired.

I did about a 3-mile warmup as usual, got to the OC Fair Run 5K race start at 7:55, and the OC Fair Run 5K race went off at 8:00.

OC Fair Run 5K:

I actually didn’t feel too bad for the first mile. I was working hard, and it felt like I was running about 6:05-6:10 pace. I thought, maybe I don’t feel as bad as I thought…then we reached mile 1 of the OC Fair Run 5K, and I logged a 6:25. LOL. That’s a fine time, but I’m in a lot better shape. The first mile is also the fastest because the next two miles go into and around the Fair.

As we entered the Fair, I noticed there were some cyclists on the course. I was trying to figure out what they were doing. At first, I thought they were course marshals, but they were weaving in and out of runners and, quite frankly, getting in the way, so I wasn’t super sure. During the next mile, I found myself fading fast. I had passed one woman and was in third, but I knew another one was right on my tail. She ended up passing me around mile 1.7, and I thought for sure I was fourth. I hit mile 2 in 6:47.

During the last mile, we merged with 1.1 milers, most of whom were families jogging 3-4 across. I was highly concerned I would run into a child, and we would both topple over. Plus, we also had a few cyclists on the course, as mentioned. It was such a chaotic and dangerous mess because there were parts where it was pretty narrow. As we exited the Fair, I watched as the cyclists cut off some of the runners, and they came to a stop.

The last half mile or so is a straight shot to the finish. I had somehow repassed and placed myself in third. I kicked as hard as I could…which for the day was 6:06 pace, and crossed the OC Fair Run 5K as the third woman overall.

OC Fair Run 5K Thoughts:

To be honest, I felt like trash, and it just happened to be that it was the third-fastest time of the day, which saved my streak of 5x 3rd places at the OC Fair. I was feeling pretty down about it. After I got home, I started to feel some chest tightness, and the next day I woke up and got looked at…turns out I have bronchitis, so it all makes sense. Would I have raced if I had known that? No, probably not, but it is what it is.

I do always have fun at the OC Fair Run 5K, but I hope they figure out how to make it less congested and chaotic while running through the Fair.

OC Fair Run 5K FAQ

Where is the OC Fair Run 5K?

The OC Fair Run 5K takes place at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, California. In 2026, the race started near the Main Gate at 88 Fair Drive. Runners head through sections of the OC Fairgrounds, which gives the race a different setup.

When is the OC Fair Run 5K?

The 2026 OC Fair Run 5K was held on August 9 at 8:00 a.m. The separate 1.1-mile Carnival Detour Dash started at 8:10 a.m. August weather can mean warm temperatures by race time. In 2026, it was one of the more hot and humid days in Orange and Los Angeles County.

What is the OC Fair Run 5K course like?

The course starts outside the main Fair entrance before heading into and around the OC Fairgrounds. The opening mile is the fastest section. Once inside the Fair, there are more turns, narrow areas, and other runners to navigate. There are a lot (and I mean A LOT) of turns. In 2026, congestion increased late in the race when 5K runners mixed with participants from the 1.1-mile event.

Is the OC Fair Run 5K a fast race?

You can run fast here, although I would not choose the OC Fair Run 5K specifically as a PR course. The Fairground sections can get crowded, and August weather adds another challenge. I have run the race four times, and each year has been different.

Is the OC Fair Run good for families and walkers?

Yes. The event is designed for runners and walkers, while the 1.1-mile race is stroller-friendly. The official schedule gives participants 1.5 hours to finish before the OC Fair opens to the public.

Would I run the OC Fair Run 5K again?

Yes. Despite the congestion in 2026, I always have fun at the OC Fair Run 5K. Running through the Fair gives it a distinctly Orange County race-day atmosphere. It’s just a fun summer race.
