After nordic skiing, we stopped at Ruth’s Diner near Salt Lake City. It’s not actually in the downtown but located in the mountains close by. It has a gorgeous view and probably one of the best views from a diner. Although, River Star Diner has a great view.
Ruth’s Diner (Salt Lake City) Atmosphere: A
Ruth’s Diner doesn’t have the big shiny metallic diner look, but rather a rustic log cabin look. If you picture a family-owned, local mountain town diner, it’s what Ruth’s Diner looks like. The building is long and looks like a log cabin.
Inside, there are plenty of booths and tables, and they are all made of wood. When we arrived, it was fairly quiet.

I didn’t order coffee this time around, because we had a long car ride ahead.
Ruth’s Diner Food: A
The Ruth’s Diner menu has everything you picture in a diner. They have all-day breakfast and plenty of lunch and dinner options. Unlike many diners, Ruth’s Diner has plenty of healthier options and a lot of seafood. It’s rare to see so much smoked salmon at a diner. The menu is a diner with a unique twist.
Some of the options on the Ruth’s Diner menu that stood out include:
- Smoked Salmon – in-house smoked salmon, capers, red onions, roasted tomatoes, spinach, and feta cheese. Served open face.
- Red Trout & Eggs – Cajun-spiced filet, grilled and topped with salsa Fresca. Served with two eggs
- Grandma Claire’s Baked Mac and Cheese which they claim is “better than Mama used to make.”
- Pulled Pork Tacos – three flour tortillas filled with Holy Smoke pulled pork, fresh pineapple cilantro slaw, lime crema, Cotija cheese, and Ruth’s hot honey sauce, served with Spanish rice, fat-free pinto beans, sour cream, and salsa Fresca.

Ultimately I decided to get the Aussie Burger which came with lettuce, tomato, red onion, grated beetroot,
grilled pineapple, cheddar cheese, chipotle mayo, and an over-easy egg, on a toasted ciabatta roll. When it arrived, it was massive! I was impressed with how many vegetables they fit on there. I was intrigued by the combination of pineapple and vegetables, but I ended up really liking it. I am not usually a fan of mayo, but I enjoyed the chipotle mayo. Both the burger and the fries tasted great, and I would order them again.
Finally, the meal came with Ruth’s Diner homemade biscuits and jam, which tasted great. I would order the biscuits and jam just as the meal. They were massive and fluffy. If you stop by, you need to make sure you try them.

For my burger and fries, it was $13.69. Reasonably cheap as far as diners go.
Ruth’s Diner Service: A
My entire experience was great, from the host to the waitress. Everyone was friendly, and I enjoyed my experience.
Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back to Ruth’s Diner?
I enjoyed Ruth’s Diner in Salt Lake City, and I would go back. There are so many options I want to try, and the biscuits and jam tasted good. If you are in the area skiing or just visiting, I highly recommend it. In fact, I would go back solely for the biscuits and jam.
