February Running Recap

It feels like January was 11 months long, and February was 11 minutes. I’m not complaining because I won’t say it was my favorite month. Has February even ever been close to my favorite? No. Like the month, this recap will be short because there isn’t a heck of a lot to say!

Luckily, compared to many winters we’ve had recently, it wasn’t all that hard to get outside. It’s been much milder.

Miles Run: Around 200

Rest Days: 4

Workouts: 8 Including Lonely 5ks

Races: Cupids Chase 5k (20:32)

Thoughts:

I wanted and hoped to race more than I did. I signed up for another race but things popped up the night before, and I couldn’t go. I bummed but made the best of it. I’ve told myself if I can’t find a race I’ll run a hard 5k alone. I’ve been doing well sticking to that.  The 5k I actually did race, was my slowest but we also ran against a headwind, and I pretty much ran that race alone as well.

I’m slowly coming to terms that this season, while working hard, might not be a “fast” season for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for anyone running a 20 minute 5k, but I want to get back to 18:XX. My body is just not there right now.

February was at least much more consistent than January. In January, I couldn’t get any rhyme in training and often found myself taking at least two if not more days off from running due to things popping up. The goal for March is to be as consistent with running. I am already signed up for a few races including Shamrock Half. At this point, something under 1:30 and close to Carlsbad seems like a dream, but that is the goal.

After sharing on Instagram a few weeks ago, about the Vital Proteins Collagen Creamer, many people asked me if I liked it. In fact, it was one of my most responded too stories. I was not expecting that!

In short, I like the Vital Proteins Collagen Creamer. It’s not as rich as a traditional creamer, but it has far more health benefits. Plus, adding it to coffee isn’t the only way I use it. Unlike other collagen products, the creamer contains healthy fats as well as collagen peptides.

Now that we got a few of the health benefits out of the way on to using it. Many people have asked me how I liked Vital Proteins collagen creamer.

If you like darker coffee that doesn’t taste like milk with a splash of coffee, collagen creamer is the way to go.

The creamer tastes good, but it isn’t going to taste like a super-rich coffee.

Do I like it? Yes.

Do I know it won’t taste like a super rich creamy coffee? Also yes.  It doesn’t take away from the flavor of the coffee. Most people know I like adding whipped cream in my coffee at diners, it won’t taste like a “dessert” coffee.  I appreciate that as much as coffee with whipped cream.

It might sound crazy but adding the collagen creamer to coffee isn’t the only way I use collagen creamer.

Here are a few ways that I’ve found I like adding the Vital Proteins Creamer:

  • Hot Cocoa. This is my favorite method of using creamer. It makes the cocoa much more rich with a hint of coconut.
  • Waffles: Remember early in the month, when I posted the waffle recipe. I’ve occasionally substituted the whey protein for the creamer, and it tastes good. Vital Proteins has discussed using most of their products in baked goods, but I haven’t tried much until this year.
  • Oatmeal: In the winter, I eat a lot more oatmeal. Basically, if it’s warm, I’ll eat it in the winter. Instead of milk, I like adding the creamer for the extra collagen and fat.

In all, I like the Vital Proteins Collagen Creamer. Of the three flavors, the Coconut Creamer is my favorite. The Vanilla and Gingerbread Collagen Creamer are good too. While of course, it can be put in coffee, there are many other ways to use it.

Hiking Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve

Now if that isn’t a mouthful, I don’t know what is.

The final hike while in California was the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve.  After exploring the Marin Headlands the day before, we wanted a change of scenery and decided to go south. The Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve is located on the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Parts of the trail at Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve overlook Half Moon Bay.

At the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, I was excited to get a glimpse of the Redwood trees as I had never seen any in person. Now,  coast redwoods are only found along the coast from Oregon to Monterey.  The coast redwoods are the tallest trees in the world and can grow up to 360 feet tall. The oldest known age of a redwood is 2,200 years, but the average is 500 to 1,000 year old.

When we got to Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, we decided to do the Purisima Creek Trail.  There is no big “parking lot” at Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, and we parked on the side of the road.

At Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve there are several trails including the North Ridge Trail, Craig Britton Trail, Whittemore Gulch Trail, Harkins Ridge Trail, and Redwood Trail.

The Purisima Creek Trail was once an old logging road.  It can get steep, and some of the grade was about 15%.  The views at Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve are worth it, and it was one of my favorite hikes of the trip. We ended up hiking about 6 miles or so.

The Redwood Trees, themselves at Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, did not disappoint. They were huge!

Hiking through California was a lot of fun. Even though the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve hike was the shortest, my favorite was the Anderson County Park, but I enjoyed each of them. Each was different and unique.

Anderson Park was a surprising and beautiful dam. I’ve never hiked a Volcano until Calavera Hills. Marin Headlands had beautiful views on the entire route. The Los Robles Trail was fun to get out of traffic for a while and of course, seeing my first Redwoods at the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve was wonderful too. I hope to be back to California again and check out some more different hikes.

Training: 5ks and Rain

Another week of training in the books. Despite not racing, I had good workouts.  To be honest, I haven’t hated “not racing” recently.

I’ve enjoyed waking up, running my own 5k, and getting on with my day. I still show up, work hard, but in the comfort of my own time. There haven’t been a lot of races lately locally anyway.  Recently, I haven’t particularly wanted to drive 90 minutes round trip. I haven’t been feeling it.

Monday: .1 outdoors/easy 60 minutes treadmill
Tuesday: Easy 60 minutes
Wednesday: 6X800 with 400 jog in between
Thursday: Rest
Friday: Easy 60 minutes
Saturday: 5k (20:01) 6:37, 6:21, 6:26
Sunday: Long Run (14 miles)

Thoughts:

Last Monday, I was in Albany. We had gotten some snow overnight.  When I lived in NYS, I ran outdoors before, so I wanted to be “badass” and run outside again.  That was a terrible idea, and it ended like this:

The rest of my daily runs were easy.  Nothing of note.

Workout Wednesday: 6×800 averaging 6:10 pace with 400 jog in between.

I wanted to get a good 800 workout in. When I started running there was no snow, but it looked like it may snow. In the end, the snow was coming down hard, and there was a lot on the ground. By the end of the day, we had a good 3-4 inches.

As far as the workout, I felt decent. My legs still don’t feel like they have a lot of pep, but they don’t feel bad either.

Lonely 5k: (20:01) 6:37, 6:21, 6:26

I had other plans this weekend to run the Frostbite 5 Miler. Things changed and driving 90 minutes round trip wouldn’t fit in, so I ran at home. I’m not entirely sure my watch didn’t pick up, and I ran a little long, but that’s ok.

Long Run: 14 miles at 8:13 pace

It was pouring rain, 45 degrees. The East Coast racing favorite!  On paper, 8:13 pace doesn’t seem that “fast,” but I negative split and had a quality run all around.

Thoughts:

In all, I had a good week. I’m not racing as much, but I don’t mind. As I look more into the Spring, I’ve realized this might be more of a stepback season for me. I’ll still run and race, but I’ll see where it takes me.

Talk of Broadway (Redwood City, CA)

The last diner I went to while in California, was the Talk of Broadway. We were on our way south and wanted to eat before hiking.  The Talk of Broadway was right on our route.

The Talk of Broadway is located in downtown Redwood City. Redwood City is a lovely town, filled with restaurants, and shopping. The outside blends in other restaurants and the inside is a no-frills diner. There are a few booths, tables, and a small bar to sit. When we arrived around lunchtime, it was crowded but not overwhelming. I appreciated no one sat on each other.

Coffee: B
The coffee at the Talk of Broadway was brewed hot and fresh. In fact, the coffee station is in plain sight, so I watched them do it.  It was a little darker than I would like but in all good.

The Talk of Broadway has plenty of breakfast and lunch options. They are only open until 3 pm, so there isn’t anything heavy or dinner related.

There were many different unique pancake options including “pigs in a blanket” and sweet potato. The pigs in a blanket intrigued me, and it was a sausage wrapped in a pancake. I decided to order it because I don’t remember the last time I saw it.

I wish the pigs in the blanket had lived up to their excitement. They were kind of bland and boring. I was still relatively hungry afterward.  I could have probably eaten two meals of them.  Was it bad? No. Was it my favorite thing I’ve ordered from a diner? No.

Service: A
The waitress and entire staff were friendly.  We had plenty of refills on coffee, plus our food came out fast. The staff was the highlight of the experience.

Cost: $
For my meal and coffee, the cost was $12.

Overall Thoughts/Summary:
The Talk of Broadway was a decent diner. It wasn’t my favorite of the trip, but I would be willing to go back and order something different.
