Random Musings of the Week

Oomph what a week but I decided to participate in a thinking out loud post and update you on my life!

This week has not been optimal for sleep.  I don’t know why I’m not sleeping well, but I’ve found myself tossing and turning most days of the week.  I need 8+ hours of sleep to function well.  I’ve said before, some people can function on 2-3 hours, however, I’m not one of those people.

Hopefully I can focus on getting some sleep for the next few days.

So what else is going on?

Let’s start with the good news.  I was recently selected to be on the Rock N Roll #rocknblog team.  I’ve run a few Rock N Roll races, including Virginia Beach in 2014 and 2016 as well as Philadelphia this year.  I’ve always had a great time and so when I saw there were applications, I decided to apply.  I thought, why not me?

Rock N Roll RockNblog

I received an email a couple of days ago saying I was accepted.  To be honest, I was surprised!  I don’t apply to be an ambassador unless I already like something a lot…to me, it’s too much commitment.

So what does this mean for my running and racing?

I will run a few more RnR races.  I’m hoping to travel a little bit, and RnR Denver, Chicago and Seattle have all peaked my interest.  Since I’m not made of money to fly for every race, I probably won’t make it to all of them (or maybe any?).  I will do RnR Virginia Beach again.  Surprisingly though, the timing of Philadelphia probably won’t work for me.

I will say, I don’t have plans to take midrace selfies and will still race as if I’m paying for the race.  My only obligation for #rocknblog is to have fun and of course promote the race series too.  To me, “having fun”, is running well and being able to smile at the finish line.  For others “having fun” is about posing at various signs and statues during the race…whatever floats your fun boat!

I feel like that is my big and exciting news of the week…can the rest of my post even compare?

I found a mysterious crack at the bottom of my windshield.  My guess is a rock hit directly underneath my wiper causing a huge crack.  It was invisible to the driver or passenger.  I was cleaning my windshield from the salt only to lift the wiper and see a noticeable crack.  The entire windsheild had to be replaced, and it was not cheap.  Much cheaper than my previous Pontiac Firebird, which I do believe half of the car was a giant windshield.

One of the few photos I have left of my car...seriously all windshield

Moving on, a few people have asked how my skin has been since my antibiotic problems.  In summary, I went on a new antibiotic which took over two months to feel good again.  Before October, I had never had any issues with antibiotics.  I never had any reactions and I honestly have a stomach of steel.  Then in October, everything was thrown off and even after going off the medication I felt off.

Now I’m not longer taking an oral antibiotic and just using topical gels.  My physical health and my skin have been a lot better since just using the topical gel.

Questions for you:
Have you run a Rock N Roll race? Is there one I should look into traveling for?
What’s a random fact about your day?

  1. I ran the inaugural Rock n roll marathon in Liverpool in the UK last year, it was amazing! I’d love it if you could get to and blog about the Denver one. Denver is my favourite city!

  2. I was wondering what all those Rock N Blog posts were all about!? Congratulations and I’m very happy to know you will be staying true to yourself and not snapping any mid-race photos. I think I would die of shock if I saw that on your feed!!
And OMG that Firebird is definitely ALL windshield – HAHAHA!

    • I think if I attempted to take photos and run could possibly take out half of the racers. I should probably just focus on running. Ha!

  3. Yay! I’m apart of RockNBlog and feel the same as you. I’m not made of travel money either. But there are a few races close to me like Savannah, Nashville, Virginia, and Raleigh….but MAN. I’dlove to see Colorado or San Diego. It’s so awesome to have all the races!!! But not so awesome to not have all the travel sponsorship. I must get faster… Ha. I usually don’t take mid race selfies either.. I’m too serious for that 😉 but pre and post I’m all about. Random fact? I haven’t slept either. We just bought a home! Yay! But I don’t do well on less than 8 hours either. I’m a total grouch currently lol

  4. Congrats Hollie! I didn’t know that taking selfies and posing at statues during a race was a “thing”. Thank you as always for enlightening me.
I think there’s a way to add your windshield to your auto insurance coverage? I know I’ve gotten my windshield replaced for free before- they even came to my workplace and replaced it in the parking lot so I didn’t have to wait.
    Random fact- I miss you!

  5. Congrats on getting that ambassadorship! Very well deserved 🙂 Random fact is that I started my very first link-up today! I would love if you joined, and this would be a perfect post to fit with the theme of “What’s new with you?”

  6. I don’t understand people who can survive and function and be kind people on 2-3 hours of sleep. My husband used to be that way (he drove us to Texas from NJ, 27 hours, without stopping to sleep AFTER he worked an 8 hour shift and was fine.) until we had a kid and now he conveniently needs 8-10… thanks, babe.

  7. I love Rock N Roll races! My favorite so far is the New Orleans- I highly recommend running it if you haven’t already. I ran the full but they have a half. It’s awesome that you were selected! Congrats!

  8. Lol that car is seriously all windshield. That’s hilarious.
I’ve done 2 RnR, Vegas half was my first half marathon and it was awful. Probably because I had no idea how fast I would run so I stuck myself in the very last corral with the strollers. And I guess a whole bunch of people got sick from the water. I did Seattle full a few years ago and it was incredible. The most beautiful race (besides Asheville) I’ve ever done. And it didn’t even rain. 🙂 congrats on being chosen!

  9. Denver! Yahoo!!! I have been an official pacer in that one once and also in the marathon, which will no longer exist. Hope you come out this year!

I’ve run rock ‘n’ roll Arizona and San Diego, my first and second marathons.

  10. Congratulations on the ambassadorship!! RnR races are not my cup of tea, but I definitely understand why they appeal to people and I think they can be great events. My second marathon was actually RnR San Diego and the course was gorgeous!

  11. Congrats on the Rock n Blog ambassadorship! I do enjoy RnR races. It was my first half and I PRed in Philly so maybe they’re just lucky for me haha I feel like we all have different goals for races and you are still able to promote the race even while racing hard. RnR Denver would be amazing!

  12. Congratulations on the ambassadorship! The cities you mentioned sound awesome! Well, as long as the Seattle one is during their sunny season 🙂 But Denver?! How fun! I hope you’re able to make it out to some of them. Jon bought his Jeep and a week later his windshield got a HUGE crack in the driver’s side so he had to replace it. Then, about a month later he got another crack but it’s low on the passenger’s side. So he decided to just leave it since we had literally JUST replaced his BRAND NEW windshield! And then a few weeks ago (so now his car is like, 1o months old), another rock hit the passenger’s side and he has a small crack starting in the upper windshield now. We’re not replacing it till it spreads really bad because obviously, his car is going to just keep getting rocks in it. I toss and turn at night a ton now too and I definitely need a good 8 hours to feel normal. I get 6 usually before work (but don’t work much anymore) and am so exhausted for my whole shift! Sleep is so fantastic!

  13. congrats on being an ambassador that sounds like a lot of fun! i bet chicago would be a great race, its on my list of places to run a half marathon one day. the only time i take pictures during a race is when im at disney, i love meeting characters so those races are never for a PR

  14. I have run R-N-R races in Phoenix, Chicago, Philadelphia and Virginia Beach (x3). I haven’t had a bad experience yet. Chicago was probably my favorite—I just love running the streets of Chicago.

  15. Congrats on RocknBlog! You should definitely run RnR Seattle, it’s so pretty that time of year here! It’s during sunny season which makes it all the better time to visit.

  16. Congrats on the ambassadorship! That’s super exciting. It’s on my running bucket list to travel somewhere new and cool to run one of the RnR races. Traveling and running.. 2 of my favorite things:)

  17. Congratulations on RockNBlog – that’s awesome!
I decided to cut back on travel in 2016 so didn’t apply, but maybe things will change for 2017 🙂

  18. I found out I was allergic/sensitive to (my doc has used both terms) an antibiotic and it wiped out my whole immune system! I ended up with c.diff twice, which is no fun at all, so I completely understand the bad reactions to antibiotics. I’ve run RNR Seattle and Denver twice. Both are really great races (Denver is close to me though!). Seattle is a really fun course (a little hilly though) and it is actually my PR marathon. Congrats on getting selected for the Rock ‘n Blog team!!
