Weekend Fun

Last week and the Fourth of July weekend was low key for me. I was happy to relax.  I was able to see my inlaws in PA, have some personal time, run and work.  I also got some necessary cleaning done. I feel like I had a balance of everything!

Last week I visited my inlaws in Central PA. Even though it was a short visit, it was great to get out of town and see them. I always enjoy Central Pa because of how quiet and peaceful it is.  It reminds me a lot of where I went to college.

We did a lot while I was in PA but we were able to relax as well.  We relaxed by their pool, had all your can eat crabs, went for an extremely hilly run and had gas station coffee of the area (Rutters).

If you are ever in or around Chambersburg, PA, I recommend going to Trickling Springs Creamery. It’s an adorable creamery and the ice cream is homemade. I tried the butter brickle and maple bacon.  They also have lunch too and it’s a perfect cafe and ice cream stop for anyone.

I never thought I would enjoy maple bacon anything but the ice cream is really good!

I back on Thursday and they restored my internet.  I haven’t had internet since the storm 10 days ago so it was nice to get that finally restored.  I had power and lights but did not have central air, hot water, internet and cable.  I missed hot water more than the internet.

On Saturday I ran a local 5k. It was actually the highlight of my weekend.  I got to hang out with friends and coworkers before going to work.

In my personal experience, Holidays are always harder when family is gone. This Fourth of July was mentally difficult and honestly I was glad to be working and to stay busy.  I honestly didn’t do a lot for the Fourth of July.  I ran a 5k, worked and then got a deep tissue massage.  Due to a change of plans, I grilled at my house.

On Sunday evening, Liz and I ended up grabbing dinner at a local diner. I haven’t been to a new diner in a few weeks so it was nice to do that. I love catching up with Liz anywhere and everywhere.

Now begins another work week. I’m excited to hopefully have a “normal” week that doesn’t involve loss of power or traveling. I have a few things I need to finally get done!

Questions for you:

How was your July fourth weekend?

Do you like the countryside or city better?

  1. Butter brickle and maple bacon ice cream sounds strange and yet amazing! Glad that you got all of your power/internet back–I could not imagine! Looks like you had a great week, enjoy the start of this one 🙂

    1. I hope you are enjoying the week as well Cody! I honestly think there are worse things than not having internet…it was tough but not the worst thing!

  2. It sounds like you had a good trip to Central PA and a good weekend. Congrats on your 5K and hooray for hanging out with Liz (I read her race recap too). Clay’s grandparents live way out in the country/mountains and it’s fun to visit them and sometimes go for very hilly runs.

  3. Ooh that ice cream looks good to me – sounds interesting but delicious! And your comment with the crab picture made literally LOL.
Fourth was great – took a nice weekend trip. And I typically enjoy the city more; however, I don’t mind a countryside vacation now and then!

  4. Central PA is so gorgeous! I went to college at Penn State (as central as you can get) and loved it. Dan grew up near Chambersburg, in Carlisle, so next time we’re visiting I’ll have to check that place out! I’m definitely a city girl, but I do enjoy the peace and quiet of country life every once in a while. I don’t think I could live there though!

Hope you have a great week Hollie 🙂

  5. I’m glad you got to PA to see your in-laws. Holidays away from family are really hard even if they aren’t “big” holidays (like Easter for me). It just seems like you’re supposed to be with family during that time so when you’re not, something is missing. At least that’s how I felt this weekend. I’m glad you made the best of it! And I could really go for that ice cream.

  6. “Crabs – the god kind” – I literally laugh out loud 😉
Sounds like a lovely holiday! And maple bacon ice cream?! Amazing.

  7. Glad you had a good weekend 🙂 holidays without family would be hard. I couldn’t imagine.
and I’m such a country side girl.! the city is so not for me.. I get overwhelmed by the traffic and just not knowing where I’m going. lol

  8. I want to live in an area outside of a city with easy access INTO the city. I would never be able to do city life 24/7. Too fast (and toxic) for me and my lungs. Haha! I never went to trickling springs when I was at Shippensburg 🙁 🙁 This makes me sad!

    1. Ah, I hope you are able to go back sometime. That place is amazing. Although there are plenty around us we can go too as well.

  9. Fourth of July is a big family holiday for us. Well, actually, all holidays are … we had everyone over for a feast/BBQ. My grandma went to town with the baking: cookies, creampuffs, the works. Mmmm!

  10. I love the city more for sure, however it is nice to getaway countryside and just listen to the quiet!

Do you wear the Garmin 10?

  11. That race was the highlight of my weekend too! I love running with a fast field. I also love diners. I needed a good diner coffee/chit-chat session so I’m glad we made it happen!

  12. Celebrating holidays without family is always tough, but I’m glad you were able to make a trip to see your parents. I’m totally a suburban type of girl. I can handle the city for likeeeee 6 hours. When I worked in Manhattan I would literally sprint for the train to get me out of th city!

  13. Yay for strangely flavored ice-cream, sometime you can get an amazing flavor combo! I am definitely more of a city girl. I get bored easily, so a city life would always give me something to do. However I enjoy stepping out every once in a while to go to a nice forest trail and just zone out :).

  14. I made Maple Bacon ice cream before at my job (obviously an ice cream shop). The hardest part was caramelizing all the bacon with brown sugar. I had to do so much of it and got so greasy. It basically gets into the air! I also spent the 4th working. It’s a busy time of year, so it kept me happy. I like to help out with big weekends at work. I hope you get a lot done this week!

  15. I always enjoy reading your posts 🙂 That ice cream sounds awesome. I live in the city and love it because everything is always close at hand. But, I really miss the quiet and peace of the country. There always feels like there is this frenetic energy that you can’t escape. Plus, I would love to live close to some quality trails and not have to drive or run far to get to them.

  16. I did absolutely nothing this 4th… or for my birthday. I did a lot of sleeping and coffee drinking though so it was pretty stellar in my eyes 🙂

I’m nervous for the holidays alone… I know it’ll be a while before I find friends and a MS ‘family’ so I’m enjoying as much time with friends and family now as I can.

  17. I like country and city. I live in a small-ish town, so its nice to visit the city, but once you’ve spend some time in the city it is nice to slow things down and enjoy the country too. I love a nice weekend with the family, but it is so nice to have a week (or weekend) with no plans so I can get things done at home!
