Working.

I wanted to wait a while to make this post official.  (IE: I wanted to receive a paycheck first). I’m terrible at keeping secrets.  I’m terrible with lying and terrible at keeping secrets.  So I guess there are worse things in life…I was going to post this last week but then when Tim and I got engaged I didn’t want to bombard people with too much news.

I am excited to say that I have started working in a local running store in NJ.  I couldn’t be happier.  It’s a longish commute but I already enjoy my coworkers (who…fancy that enjoy running), as well as the customers and that atsmopshere.  I am blessed to be able to able to do this.

To be honest, it has been a very long 8 months of not working.  Going from working for a year in Oswego doing something I love followed by not working was hard.  After I moved in August, it was next to impossible to find a job in Texas.  Being there short term, the jobs were not exactly jumping off the page for me.  Please hire me seasonally for anything (nevermind we weren’t in any season).  After constant applying to multiple jobs in NJ (anywhere from health care to running stores), I was so excited to find a job doing something I love.

I’m excited to do something I truly enjoy.

I am a very laid back person and have enjoyed each job I’ve had.  I cannot complain about any of the jobs I’ve had.  My coworkers were nice, I received a paycheck to pay bills and I wasn’t miserable.  I have never been miserable during any of my jobs and have enjoyed each.  Something I have come to realize is I don’t think I’ll ever be the type of person to sit in the same office for 8 hours a day for 30 years.  I thrive on change.  I don’t thrive on moving 4 times in one year, but I do thrive on change.  My last job was sitting in an office or college campus and I loved it.  I truly enjoyed working there.

This job will be working at a running store and my office is a store. I can already tell I will love it.  (It’s only been roughly a month but I am happy to go to work).  (And yes the store does stock Oiselle items so that is the cherry on top).

So that’s where I’ve been.  Not that I wanted to keep it a huge secret, I just wanted to get some time under my belt before broadcasting it.

Question for you: What should I spend my paycheck on?

  1. Congrats! This sounds like the perfect job for you. It matters to do something you enjoy. Life is too short not to. I wouldn’t say my job is the office job you described, but I have been doing it for almost 15 years now. There is a lot of variety and I enjoy it.

What to spend that first paycheck on? No matter what, start saving for retirement. Anything set aside now will be worth more in 50 years than anything set aside later.

  2. I’m so glad you’re doing something you love – and I’m totally with you on not being in the same place forever. I really thrive on change, and if there isn’t enough in one place, I know I’ll move on! Congrats and of course spend it on running stuff! 🙂

  3. I sometimes wish I could quit the job I have now and work at a running store, (Actually, I wish that all the time!) but I definitely wouldn’t be making the same kind of money. Enjoy those sweeeet discounts! 😀

  4. A trip to pittsburgh to run with me! Just kidding although I’ll take you to a variety of diners around us 😉 Congrats on the job hun! It’s been a good month for you, which is wonderful 🙂

  5. sounds like a perfect job for you! Do you get a discount for your new Oiselle clothes? I haven’t worked in a month, and has been a challenge. I like being home with Andrew, but working in the NICU is something I love to do, and wouldn’t want to leave anytime soon.

  6. YAY! So happy for you, Hollie!!!! Also, I wrote in my own answer to your poll… haha you’ll probably know which one mine is 😉

  7. Congratulations on your new job!!! Although I agree with the first person on saving for retirement- Roth IRA is a great idea if you don’t already have one- definitely splurge on a little something for yourself. Because having a job and working is no fun if you can’t at least spend some of the money on something you want, whether it’s shoes, clothes, or beauty related. I tried to plan a little “me” splurge from each paycheck and it really helps. Plus it sounds like the job is a great fit for you.

  8. Congrats on the new job!It sounds like a great fit for you! I get really OCD when I’m not working (I had the whole year off last year when I had my daughter). I must say my house was EXTREMELY clean and organized:).You totally need to blow your paycheck on something fabulous and fun that’s the way it should be… I’m actually rocking a new dress today because I believe in the reward system, I did well over the weekend so I got something new. It makes Mondays less Manic:) Congrats again on the new job doll!

  9. Congrats on the new job Hollie!! I’m both happy for you and jealous at tje same time hahaha lol 🙂 if I didn’t have my current job which I enjoy then I would want to work in a running store

  10. Sounds like an ideal job for you! Working in a running store, around runners all day every day would be great! 🙂 Definitely treat yourself to something nice out of your first paycheck!

  11. Congrats on all counts…hmmm. Go to a B&B near a beautiful natural land feature over the weekend, and spend two days running, reading, and reflecting on the important things?

  12. Congrats to you! My sister works at one in Florida. She used to work at one here in Dallas when she lived here – I liked that because of the discounts she got me! Haha

  13. Good luck! And working in a running store sounds perfect for you! As for your paycheck, from the list of things you wrote… you should really spend it on the one thing you’d enjoy the most!

  14. Congratulations!! I used to have several friends who worked at my local running store downtown and they seemed like they loved it. 🙂

  15. I’ve always thought working in a running store would be great – it’s definitely a perfect fit for you (I am too useless at social interaction…) and I’m so happy that things are falling into place for you with your running and your work 🙂

    xxx

  16. Congratulations! I worked at a running store for almost a year and I loved it…back when my focus was still on running. I have a feeling you’re going to love it! 🙂

  17. Congrats sounds like a great fit!

While suggestions at saving have a time and place I believe firmly in treating yourself. I do it every single week – but obviously not all are “big” splurges!

I say if it has been a while treat yourself to a little spa day. Mani, pedi, facial, massage…have some you time! Can always find great deals on groupon or lifebooker so that you can have multiple treatments for minimal price 🙂

  18. YAY this is so exciting. I am the same way as you-can’t keep a job too long only because I believe there’s so much out there and so much to learn! Congrats Hollie-you’ve had a hell of a week in releasing big news 🙂

  19. Congratulations Hollie, that is so awesome!
Not only is working in a running store super cool, but liking the people you work with makes all of the difference in the world!

  20. Yay Hollie! Congrats! That sounds like the perfect place for you, and exactly the kind of thing you were hoping for when we first talked about it 🙂 That will be a great place to learn, and be around the sport, helping people out with their own running lives 🙂

  21. I’m so glad you’re enjoying the running store! I think that is absolutely the perfect fit! Work takes up so many hours of the day, it should be something we enjoy and are passionate about.

  22. Congratulations on the new job! It’s been a seriously amazing week for you- engaged-check! new job-check! half marathon PR-check! Way to go and what a perfect fit! xo
