Rewriting NYC Marathon Training Week 5

I had written a rather lengthy blog post about changing my training and why a sub 19 minute 5k would probably not happen this training cycle and I was fine with that.  From Friday until Sunday, I had been (and am) working 10 hour days each day.  Needless to say when I signed up for a local 5k at 7 am 30 minutes away, I had somewhat regretted that in the midst of all of the work.  I toyed around with doing it but ended up deciding that I would do it.  (That is what happens me when you actually pay for races).

But anyways, I feel like my only summer goal of conquering a sub 19 minute 5k again is achieved and I’ll recap the entire race later in the week.

I have quite a few races coming up in August which I’m excited for (and will serve as speed workouts anyways).

July 30: Memorial Scholarship 5k (6:30pm start)

August 10th: Mud Run Obsticle Course Race (with dad…”fun race”)

August 17: Strider 1 mile race (my only track race ever)

August 24: Either ECSC 8k or Patrick Henry Half Marathon

August 30: Rock and Rock Half Marathon VA Beach

So that is quite the varying distances.  So with all that excitement this was a very mentally challenging week for me, but it was also a very productive week.  Which is surprising because every day was a constant battle of should I run or should I not run.

Monday: 11 miles (8:10 pace) after going shopping with mom
Tuesday: Off
Wednesday: 12.5 miles
Thursday: 15.5 miles at 8:38 pace
Friday: 11.2 miles at 8:52 pace
Saturday: Operation Homefront 5k (18:35 PR!) total miles 12.28
Sunday 13-15…I haven’t decided.
Total: 75ish

Training:

I’ll be the first to admit this week was a hot mess as far as training goes.  Running wise, I had honestly felt really lazy and down on myself for the last two weeks.  Between both jobs and just life in general I hadn’t wanted to do speed work.  Monday I didn’t feel like running prior to going shopping with mom, then changed my mind around 5pm when getting home.  I decided to just not run on Tuesday because my GI system was off.  Wednesday I would have normally decided to do speed but I didn’t feel like it.  Thursday I did a long run (because two days before a race that is a good idea) and then Friday was a decent easy run.  Friday was the first day that my GI system wasn’t screaming at me and I didn’t feel completely bloated.  Then Saturday I randomly PRed in the 5k.  So with that I had a surprisingly good week of training.  I got in my miles and PRed, which is something I haven’t done since my 10k in early May.

Training next week:

I hope to be more consistent but I’m actually going on a minivacation to Long Island to do that open water 2 mile swim that I do with my relatives.  I hope I don’t drown but it’s more of a family reunion then anything else.  I honestly could care less about the swim (as long as I don’t die) but I love to to see them.  I’ll work training around that and see where it goes.

Questions for you:

How has your motivation been lately?

Do you have family reunions?

Honestly seeing my two uncles this weekend is about all we have.

  1. CONGRATS again with the PR like I said so well deserved! 🙂
Hm as for your questions… My motivation isn’t there really but I NEED to run as therapy right now BUT my body isn’t letting me it really sucks and feeling really depressed but meh oh wells… As for fam reunions sadly my only family is dad… and my dad’s step brother so no. I wish I had brothers and sisters though! Ok end of rant… Hope you have an awesome training week and don’t lose your running mojo! 🙂

    1. My running mojo was a wee bit lost the last couple of weeks but I think after my race this weekend I have somewhat found it again. Hopefully it stays. 🙂

  2. Congrats on your PR!!! Holy speedy! Looks like you’ll be pretty busy racing 🙂 My motivation lately has been good. I finished my half marathon and now I am running for fun. I am enjoying it more now that the half is over. I am just going to do a bunch of 5ks the rest of the year. We don’t have family reunions. It would be fun though. We have a pretty small family.

  3. Congrats on the PR!!! Speedy Gonzales!

We only have one family reunion each year on Father’s Day. It’s the one time we get to see really extended family and it’s a lot of fun. Otherwise, we see close relatives on holidays. BE CAREFUL on the Mud Run! If I did one of those I’d probably break or sprain every bone in my body… But then again, that’s me. LOL

      1. Yeah, I watch those on television and YouTube and every limb on my body clenches because I know damn well I would trip or something. I’m a clutz.

  4. whoa had no idea VA beach rock n roll was in august – seems like an odd time of year for it. I have to say, when I stress less and just succumb to bad weeks of training (this past week… for instance) I surprise myself with a killer week after that. Just like your PR. I mean the PR is awesome and I have no doubt we all need those shittier weeks to make others seem great.

    1. Even though I just talked to you about this I do think it’s so silly that the RnR VA Beach is on Labor Day. Though it was the second ever RnR and the first ever half marathon so they’ve kept it there. It draws an ungodly amount of runners both elites (please Ryan Hall if you are reading this come) and runners.

      1. I didn’t even think about that! I guess that is pretty cool elite runners flock to it. I love watching them run – like I said it is the best motivation for me personally to watch those types of people kick ass

  5. My motivation hasn’t been there. I’ve basically been exhausted and took the past two days off from running which has helped tremendously! I feel rested and refreshed!
I had a family reunion in May for my grandmother’s 90th. It was the first time the whole family got together in 22 years. It was amazing!

  6. I’m glad you got your 5k PR, I hope training goes a little better next week. Running while miserable sucks, but the alternative is to not run, which sucks more.

  7. Wow your PR on your 5k is absolutely incredible!! I set a PR on my last 5k too! Not quite like yours, but I was still proud haha. 🙂
My motivation to run is remembering how amazing it makes me feel! I also want to make sure I’m in good shape for my half marathon in two months so I keep that in mind too. 🙂

  8. Congrats on the PR! For something like a month straight all of my runs were pretty sucky but this week they seemed to have turned around and I couldn’t be happier. I try to picture myself crossing the finish line in New York in my goal time when I need a little extra motivation!

  9. Congrats on the new PR, that’s fabulous! I almost always PR short distances, when I’m marathon training! One of the perks! 🙂

I always have too much motivation, I need to learn how to reel it in, so I stop getting injured!

  10. Congrats on your PR! I can’t wait for the recap!
I’ve had a really weird for me confidence shake the last two weeks from factors outside of my control. Thats really weird for me, but keeping on trying the next day is the best way to get over it

  11. Im so proud of you with the PR, especially with the week that you had. You’re setting yourself up for some awesome upcoming races. Motivation definitely changes like a roller coaster for me but right now it’s pretty high (thanks to you and heather 🙂 )

Family reunions in my family are known as weddings and funerals. Yep.

  12. Very impressive race schedule there! looking forward to following your constantly moving forward journey! PS making your nutella waffles this weekend for brunch when my friends come round. Nutella is more popular in peanut butter here in Aus!

  13. Congrats on the PR! I remember you mentioning that the 5K PR would happen when it happens… there you have it, it happened! 🙂 My motivation is all over the place, was high this morning, blah this evening… no family reunions here!
