Smoked Salmon Waffle

Smoked Salmon Waffle (Nova Lox Waffle)

Okay so I know I say this a lot, but I can’t help myself.  If you tried a smoked salmon waffle, you would probably say the same thing.  If you followed my blog last year, you know I had a mini addiction to smoked salmon bagels at a little restaurant near my college.  (I still do, only commuting 150 miles everyday for a bagel would take a large toll on my gas station coffee funds).

Remember this guy?

Well needless to say eating nova lox bagels was the inspiration behind this waffle.  After all, waffles are bigger, and have more room for salmon and more room to be delicious. More room for a smoked salmon waffle? Plus more carbs?

Smoked Salmon Bagel Recipe:

2/3 cup all-purpose flour, wheat flour, or flour of choice
¼ cup feta cheese
1 package of thin slices of smoked salmon (nova lox)
1 egg
1/2 cup water or milk
1 tablespoon baking powder
Spices I chose to add:  garlic, onion
½ cup plain greek yogurt or cream cheese
¼ cup capers

Smoked Salmon Waffle (Nova Lox Waffle) Directions:

  1. Preheat a waffle maker
  2. Mix all dry ingredients together in a large bowl
  3. Add wet ingredients together and mix in a separate mixing bowl.
  4. Add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients.
  5. Pour into waffle iron and cook until golden brown.
  6. After cooked, put on a plate and add a layer of greek yogurt (or cream cheese), capers, then top with slices of smoked salmon.
  7. Some people prefer to serve the waffles with lemon zest, lemon juice, or fresh dill.
Smoked salmon waffle before adding bonus salmon and greek yogurt!

Walaa.

Why greek yogurt?

They added cream cheese on the bagel when I buy them, but I was feeling a bit healthy and wanted to protein.  Smoked salmon waffles have become one of my healthy breakfast splurges.

Questions for you:

Do you like smoked salmon? Have you tried Nova Lox Waffles?

  1. I love salmon! I enjoy it grilled, and I have never had it on a bagel before! Occasionally I like savory waffles with peanut butter and bananas. 🙂

  2. I literally just had a waffle with apple slices & egg right before I read this post… but now I’m rather sad I didn’t use salmon instead. If only I would’ve read your blog minutes before. Damnit!!

  3. My husband would love this…I unfortunately don’t eat seafood really…haven’t acquired the taste for it yet but my husband continues to work on this, lol. He made us bacon, egg, and cheeses this morning as he was reminiscing about how we always made those in college and both our workplaces closed due to Sandy so we had a nice little breakfast together, lol.

  4. I love waffles every which way–savory OR sweet. Love the idea of a greek yogurt topping for a protein option. I do love my cream cheese, hmmm, hadn’t thought about adding it to a waffle–now I want to do that!

  5. I’m not sure I could do a salmon waffle. I’m not a seafood fan at all so I know I wouldn’t be able to do it…. but it’s such a unique idea! I mean, waffles > bagels so why not use them to eat whatever you would normally put on a bagel? I’ve never had a savory waffle… I’m more of a box mix baker. Incompetent in the kitchen, LOL

  6. HOLY MONKEYS!!!! Girl you are a freaking genius. How have I never thought to combine two of my all-time faves?! 😀 I wonder how it’d be with pb on the waffles…..mwahaha

  7. Smoked salmon is totally one of my favorite foods!!! I <3 smoked salmon bagels! Maybe I'll be brave enough to try the waffles at some point.

  8. You just won my heart! My roommate got me reading your blog and I love it, but this just put the icing on the cake! I love waffle creations and you are giving me so many ideas!!! I cannot wait for this creation to make an appearance in my meals!

  9. I used to work at a restaurant where we would serve a brunch item of smoked salmon with capers, so its literally smoked salmon, capers, and some lemon wedges. YUM!! I have never had a savory waffle and until I cave and buy some almond flour I don’t see any in my near future, it does look delicious!!!

  10. Geeeeeeniuuuuuus! <- I' am "saying" that in like an Oprah voice FYI.

I mean like you said….more surface area and the nooks and crannys so the cream cheeze (or greek yogurt in this case) to "pool" in.

  11. I’ve never had salmon in my life. Gah I can’t believe I’m actually admitting to this publically. Food blogger fail. Big time. BUT I will say that this post has made me want to try it and perhaps alongside a waffle, too.

  12. You are officially the waffle queen!! When I first read the title I was like BAHH GROSS, but then I really thought about it and though I bet that was goood!

  13. I need this. I NEED this. Omg, it looks amazing. Alsoooo, no rugby so no games so we can do funzies soon?! My friend is coming home from Antarctica this weekend, but we should get together before Thanksgiving!!

  14. Umm YUM! I adore smoked salmon and eat it at least once a week. The idea of putting on a waffle (my current breakfast obsession) sounds like a dream come true!
