Black Bean Waffle

Black Bean Waffle Recipe

Let’s see here; I’m currently trying to waste as much time as possible by writing up another waffle recipe.  I’ve wanted to try black bean waffles for a while but never gave in.  It’s fun to make a plant-based waffle. Plus black bean waffles are easily made gluten-free.

I had heard from countless sources that black beans enriched the cocoa in brownies, and I assumed that was going to work well for waffles.  Spoiler: it did!

Since I recently got a new magic bullet for my birthday (the black edition…the only big advantage for me is they have bigger cups LOL), I thought it would be easiest to try making black bean waffles.

Black Bean Waffle Ingredients:

2/3 cup flour
¼ cup dark cocoa (I used Hershey’s cocoa personally)
½ cup pureed black beans (done in my magic bullet)
½ cup milk (water, almond milk, even coconut milk)
1 egg
1 tablespoon oil
1 tsp baking powder
*I did not add additional sweetener

Black Bean Waffle Directions:

  1. Pure black beans
  2. Mix all dry ingredients together in a large bowl
  3. Add wet ingredients (including black beans) together and mix in a separate mixing bowl.
  4. Add dry ingredients to the black bean waffle ingredients.
  5. Pour waffle batter into waffle maker and wait.
  6. Once ready, take out of waffle iron and serve with toppings of choice including maple syrup, chocolate chips, or whipped cream.

While these won’t be as pretty and golden brown as a regular waffle, they do appeal more than many other types of waffles. I enjoyed how dense the black bean waffles were and the fact that I didn’t use sweetener.  They tasted more like a big dark piece of fudge than anything.  I couldn’t taste the black beans at all, but maybe that was because they were pureed right into there.  It’s nicer healthier version that you could use a waffle staple in the mornings.

I thought about not pureeing the black beans and just having them as little surprises when biting into the black bean waffle then realized that might be a bit borderline weird. (I’m kidding)

Question for you: Have you ever used black beans in a recipe?

  1. So good. I have made black bean brownies in the past. Maybe incorporate that theory into a waffle????

Also, have made garbanzo bean brownies so there could be a white/black type of waffle/brownie going on!

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  2. Wow! I’m surprised you put black beans in your waffles! I would have thought that would be too “HLB weird” for you! LOL Glad you enjoyed them! I’d love to try these out actually….especially if they taste like big pieces of fudge.

    1. You might have missed the post where I talked about how I have no problems admitting that I was healthy living blogger. I enjoy eating healthy and it’s obviously working for my running. I just don’t shop at a big specialty stores since I would rather spend my money on other things.

  3. I’m still new to the whole “liking black beans thing” so I don’t use them a ton. BUT I am better about letting the nice people at chipotle put SOME in my burrito.

  4. I have to admit to being a little turned off by beans in recipes, but that probably comes down to the fact that I’ve only used them in one brownie recipe, and that was back in my darker days where basically nothing I made was edible so I might be a little biased. I should probably give them a chance again, but the skeeviness is hard to get over!

  5. I have yet to throw black beans into anything ninja style. I am jealous you have a magic bullet, my old roomie had a ninja and I think it’s along the lines of the magic bullet, aka amazing. I will eventually get around to it but I currently have no food processor. Woof.

This sounds like it would be good for a long run or something, eat it a little before and then have it fuel you for the wholeeeee thang.

  6. I made black bean brownies one time which called for a ripe banana and they tasted like SHIT. I can’t even use a different word because it was terrible. I’m not scared to make anything with black beans but after Alex posted her recipe, I might give it a try because bananas were not in the ingredient’s list.

  7. I tried making black bean brownies once and I did not care for them at all. Maybe it was the recipe I used, but yuck. They were bad. I’d still probably try another recipe again, though.

  8. Woooo – I have never inspired someone to try something. Especially when I suck at all things baking. These look good though. Weren’t you surprised at how good they turned out? i couldn’t believe black beans could taste so good

  9. I love that you experiment and change things up with your waffles girl 😉 we know some do not understand 😉 I am not sure I would be brave enough to try the black beans in my waffle though, I have bad luck with waffle makers unless the recipe is pretty plain
