Real Talk.

This post is mean..rude…whiny…probably offensive…whatever…oops I don’t really care.

Here is the thing.

I LIKE most of the blogs I read (I fully admit I don’t like every post or blog that I’ve read..).   Some I read to humor myself more than anything…and think shit you are right on board of USS Cray Cray…

I do enjoy seeing what you are up to, how you train, what is interesting in your life.

I don’t live to write my blog.

And I don’t live to read yours.

Yes, I say I don’t have real life friends…that is part of my sarcastic humor.  I can assure you I enjoy time with my friends (away from the computer!)

GASP GASP GASP

I confess to you, I have friends that don’t blog.

I also confess to you I don’t call any of my friends that do blog blends and think that term is overly obnoxious.  I will tell you there are quite a few bloggers I would like to put in the blender…moving on.   That being said, there are several blogs that I find to be truly inspirational and that I do consider myself good friends with.

Something that got under my skin a bit was seeing someone having a giveaway (giveaways don’t really bother me at all…who doesn’t like winning free shit).  First, let’s be honest here…there are very few giveaways that are meaningful and that the point is not draw more readers to your blog.  So you’ve decided to have a giveaway…you feel a bit “crushed” when you only  get 20 entries and no new readers…oh no.

Most giveaways appear on multiple blogs because the company is using bloggers to promote their product.  Let’s be honest here, how many of you who have hosted a nunaturals giveaway have bought nunaturals? Ect.

This particular giveaway had an option to tweet about said giveaway saying “I LOVE X and this product…I want to win”.

You LOVE?  LOVE? LOVE?

Really?  Are we all fucking obsessed with each other that we can’t get off the internet for five seconds to realize that we don’t need to LOVE each other or LOVE food.  I’m not sorry in the slightest to say there is not a food that I can say I love.  Sure I like pancakes and I like to eat, but I’m not at the level to say I love a certain product.

But apparently the blogging world is one big family because we are all stuck up each other asses praising every little thing you do until the sun comes up whether it’s right or wrong.  To be clear, I know for a damn well fact there are plenty of things I do that are not the smartest thing in the world.  I don’t care…call me out on it…

To summarize…some people need to get off their god damn high horse and realize they aren’t god’s gift to the world.  Maybe then you would make some real life friends and stop sitting on your ass for hours on a day refreshing your email to wait for the next comment telling you how awesome to you are to come to your inbox.

  1. I freaking LOVE pizza.

    And I LOVE this post.

I am hosting a giveaway right now, but it’s tied to a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research, and it’s tied to a virtual race, which is tied to a date, which is the day my 6 year old will be cancer free (march 9th, if you want to mark your calendar). It’s not to drive traffic or make friends, it’s to raise money for a cause that’s important to me. Otherwise, I don’t really host any giveaways, because I think they’re weird.

    The end.

  2. Love the bluntness. The blog world really is so fake in many ways. I like the relationships I form with the people I **want** to form them with. I have truly made some pretty great friends out of it. But I’m not into the whole “omg I love you” crap with other people I barely know, nor do I have anything in common with. And the giveaways are becoming an excuse to bring readers to people’s blogs which is just stupid.

  3. please feel free to block me or unfollow my twitter if you get sick of me tweeting giveaways every now and then– I just want free stuff. I don’t care if I have to like a Facebook, follow a crazy person on Twitter, or tweet blatant lies… I’m living on a budget and if I can get myself some free shit, then I’m one happy camper.

      • yeah, maybe I’m lucky and the book blogs don’t seem to do as much product-promoting in the tweets? I generally just tweet a link to the giveaway– I’m not going to totally compromise my dignity to get something free. ;)

  4. Hmm. I saw a few posts lately that fall under that twitter love category. I always just participate in the “following” or “comment” bit. I’m not really comfortable with letting my friends see those lame tweets. Haha. Kind of embarrassing

I may have fulfilled some of these complaints you have, possibly. But still, I’m going to say that I agree with just about everything you said!

  5. I always enjoy hearing your take on other blogs!

I have a giveaway going right now and one option is to follow me on twitter. To be honest I did it to give people another way to enter the giveaway and another chance to win. I figured it was harmless, my blog is not that big and most people who read my blog already follow me on twitter so they have another shot to win. That being said, those tweets about giveaways are pretty awful. I get that giveaway posts can come across as ads (with a chance to win) but I don’t want my twitter feed full of them.

  6. HAHAHAH. I’m not gunna lie, I was afraid to click on your comment section today lol. Um, I have never heard of “blends” before but that has to be the most annoying thing I’ve ever heard. As always, really like the honesty and bluntness. Nice to see other bloggers who are still grounded.

  7. Not going to lie – this is one of the reasons why I have taken a step back on blogging. Some of these girls and promoting lifestyles/products that I just don’t jive with and for a while it was affecting me mentally. Honestly, there are like 5ish bloggers I genuinely enjoy reading and chatting with…mainly because they have a life outside of the internet.

  8. I think some people go overboard with blogging… I’ve had a few companies reach out to me to do fitness related stuff, but that’s just not my thing… I always felt why would I want to tell my “readers” what workouts to do when they can google that kind of stuff on their own lol it just sounds silly to me to just gain readership, I always just wanted people to read my stuff if they wanted to or thought I was somewhat interesting lol I think I entered 1 contest in my life too and 1 was enough because sooo many people seem to do the same thing over and over again lol you are awesome :)

  9. I love this post and completely agree- it’s always why I easily get annoyed with some healthy living bloggers who constantly talk about how good a specific brand of vitamins is or protein powder or something else. I’m now an ambassador for a local running shoe store, and I do have coupons to give out to my friends and I’ve mentioned it on my blog, shared FB posts, but I did that before just because I like their training programs and shopping there, met many friends through the TrySports program. It’s my responsibility to promote them, but I’m not going to lose a friend over someone who chooses to buy shoes elsewhere, LOL.

The other day someone posted a recipe that called for something specific- like a specific brand of Greek yogurt. I love Chobani as well, but in a recipe, I’d think most any yogurt would work, you know? I know people do things for hits, SEO, etc- i know all about that from my big girl job, but this is just blogging. It’s not that serious :) .

    • I think that makes sense though Amy. You are an ambassador of a running store that you like and promote them. Being an “ambassador for 100 different products”. I don’t mind giveaways at all but I do mind people promoting to love a certain food or love someone else. Who are you to tell me who to love? I don’t know..it somewhat irked me I guess.

      • Yeah, and they don’t provide my shoes or anything in exchange. I get a discount and I also get complimentary race entries, but it’s not “free” because I have to help with awards or volunteer at a tent.

I think I’d do a giveaway or promotion if it was a product I liked and already used. But I wouldn’t try a new protein powder and say I loved it, then show pictures of it in every post, etc. I don’t share what I eat because I eat the most plain foods ever anyway. And no one cares… LOL.

  10. Blends?! What has the world come to??
I think you’re on point with this post. I don’t mind giveaways either, but I absolutely refuse to promote products just to enter the contest.

  11. LOLOLOLOLOL i know exactly who you’re talking about….oh man she annoys the shit outta me. This isn’t the first time either, I’ve had to stop following her twitter and reading her blog because 1) all the retweets of everything good someone ever says about you and 2) ohmygod i shit sunshine and rainbows!! Lol. ANyway. I have nothing more to say, you basicaly took the words right outta my mouth.

  12. I don’t know if I should be happy or sad over the fact that I have no idea who you’re talking about. Happy that I don’t have to be bombarded with that kind of crazy, but sad because I I like to get a good laugh out of it every now and again. I’ve definitely come across the kind of blogs that you’re referring to, though, and immediately have to x out because I can’t quite stomach the whole “OH MY GOD! I LOVE THIS! I LOVE YOU! WE’RE BEST FRIENDS!” crap. Just no…

  13. Well, for once I don’t know the blogger you’re talking about! I thought I had cornered the market in hate-reads :P

I don’t have any friends outside of the internetz but I’ll still never, ever use the term ‘blends’. It makes me want to puke every time I hear it and whoever coined it deserves good poke in the eye.

Love (haha) your humour. Never change.

  14. O my. you flat out called it out. And you know what that is a good thing. I hope this is a reality check because honestly sometimes blogging feels so clicky and I hate clicks. I like what you say about loving food. I think food and HLB especially are too obsessed with the food. life should not revolve around it. And you are right, there is too much fake support and praise for things that should not be praised. People need to be called out in a lot of instances or silence should be kept. This comment is all over the place, you will get what I truly mean at our get together in a few weeks!

  15. I saw your tweets about this giveaway blog thing or whatever but I’m guessing I don’t follow the right people because I never saw the tweets.

I have to admit I read some blogs and just look at pictures and don’t actually read their blogs.

  16. Thank god someone said it. I thought maybe it was because I was British that I found all the excessive blogging love a bit uncomfortable.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good giveaway but the forcing you to sing out praises to a company does irk me. And annoy me when a blogger retweets about twenty of those tweets so it just fills my Twitter feed.
I always love your honesty. It’s refreshing to read.

  17. Your snarkiness and complaining is just as bad as those that have a lovefest with each other. Do you really have to complain about everything that annoys you in the blog/twitter/facebook world? Grow up a little and just ignore or block it if it’s clogging up your feed…it’s not that big of a deal. Your posts may be snarky humor according to you but it’s really just immature behavior and makes you sound petty. You really should take a step back and question why you even care to post this stuff.

  18. Haha, I don’t call my blogging friends, ‘blends’, they’re just my friends! Most of the people whose blog I read regularly I have actually met, or will someday soon meet, in real life.

I don’t do giveaways often because it’s too time consuming, and I’ve actually be considering stepping away from one ambassador role that I do most of my reviews for. Not really worth my time any more.

But sorry, I do LOVE Saucony haha.

  19. I seriously love cake…like LOVE. It’s almost unhealthy. I think you should continue to blog however you want to. This is your space, so write what you want! Who cares if it’s offensive, people can stop reading if they want. Either way, I dig the blunt words and this shit cracks me up.

  20. I am just a reader not a blogger myself, but I completely agree with what you typed. I always want to call people out on things on their blog but it’s not my place and because I don’t know them, I wouldn’t want some random person hating me on what I do with my life so I don’t. But i hate what I ate wednesdays, you always know when a company is trying to increase their patronage through websites (all the blogs just happen to be shopping at the same place at the same moment for the same gear), among other things. I still enjoy reading blogs and will continue to do so, although some days I do laugh out loud more than others…

  21. I might not curse as much, but I love the honesty :) I did a lot of giveaways when I started blogging years ago for exactly what you said I thought ok this is how to get readers. Now I do what works for me which are challenges because I love them and if 1 person signs up cool…however now that I’ve been more true to me there are a lot more people who want on that same bandwagon which is a healluva lot more fun.

oh and I’m craptastic about keeping up with reading everyone as I should

  22. The whole “blends” thing does go a little to far in my opinion and borders on ‘cutesy’, babyish language that is just annoying. But I just personally stop reading and following people that bother me this much. Sometimes I feel like ranting, but then thinking about putting work into a post just to complain about the small things (in the grand scheme of things) that I find annoying is just a waste of time for me. There are so many other things that I could put my energy towards to let little stuff like what some blogger on the other side of a computer screen is doing. But we all need to let off some steam sometimes so I definitely understand your need to vent! And YOUR blog is the perfect place to do it! That’s what its for after all…your place to let out your thoughts!

  23. LOVE this post Hollie!! This is pretty much the main reason I stopped blogging and basically stopped reading blogs in general. MOST of the blogs I used to read are now just carbon copies of each other. No one has even one single original thought anymore. I cannot stand the posts “here’s my oatmeal!” and 16 damn comments “WOW THAT OATMEAL LOOKS SO GOOD (really?) I LOVE OATMEAL! LOVE YOU!” Ugh gag me with a spoon. Keep on doin’ what you do girl.

  24. You know what kills me? People who BEG in these give away posts. Some people get like 2000 comments for like….a pan. A fucking pan. And all of these comments are whiny “OMG I WANNA WIN ALSO LOOK AT MY BLOG PLZ AND THANK YOU.”

In sum, HLBs are the worst. Though I could rant about certain “running” blogs as well…but I won’t.

  25. This post is fantastic! A friend sent it to me because I was venting to her about lame-o giveaways and people obsessed with page clicks. Thanks for having the balls to write this!

  26. This is refreshing to read. I get sick of all the rainbows and sunshine and general fakeness of some blogs. I’m like, why do you need to show me that imspirational quote with a scenic background? I can google quites if i wan to all on my

  27. There are a few things that really truly bother me about the blog world and excessive giveaways combined with 285903214829034 options to enter (ugh the WORST) top the list. I just…can’t. I’ve done one giveaway on my blog and it was for a product that I really loved (yes I used “love” because I really really really like tea) – Yogi Tea. It wasn’t for pageviews but to share my passion for a great product. And “blend” really? No…just no…

  28. I just got back into blogging after taking a break for the past 7 or 8 months and, I have to say, this post literally sums up why I left in the first place.
    THANK YOU.

  29. You’re the bomb, and I totally agree with this. Even thought I don’t even update my blog everyday or even every week for that matter, I still read them. And when I read them, I don’t always read every post and I definitely don’t comment on every post.

The blogging world is great if you have the time and the energy, which quite frankly I don’t very often and it’s great to see so many people supporting other people…but people need to realize that life isn’t all about blogging. Great you capture every single memory you make on your phone and then put it on your blog…but are you actually enjoying those moments?!

Just my two cents. Speak on girl!

  31. hahaha. this is hilarious. for me personally i do have actual friends that i met through blogging or twitter. that’s the thing though… they become actual friends! friends that email, call, hang out, visit, go for long runs, friends that tell me to stop acting like such a freak over training…

what’s funny is that the last thing we ever talk about is blogging. we talk about REAL life. life outside of the internet.

i dont think the blog world is one big family. there are blogs i won’t read or even follow if a certain hashtag pops up or if like 8936 people are writing the same review on some product they got for free in the mail. also, the word “blog blend” kind of makes me want to gag.

    thanks for keeping it real!
