PMB’s of New Life

Oddly enough, I’m surprised people enjoyed my review post. Since you probably won’t see another one for a few months I hope it tides you over…

Since last week I had a brag session about my time back home, I thought this week it only makes sense to do a brag session about my time back at work.  Which is somewhat stressful, but then again going back to school for the first couple of weeks was stressful.  Starting a somewhat new job and being completely away from the college setting…is well…stressful.

Physical: Physically my photos are starting to trickle in from when I got some done and I’m really happy with how they came out.  I know if you follow me on instagram you’ve probably seen a lot…but if you don’t here is one.

Mentally:  I’m back at work.  I’m mentally nervous and hoping I do a good job at work.  I can’t rely on my parents for things anymore.  That is scary.  A lot of people talk about they don’t know exactly what they want to do after college.  Well I’m out of college (have a starting job) but still don’t really know.  I won’t be at this job forever and eventually I’m going to need figure out a career, but everything seems enjoyable in my career.  That is hard to fathom that I’ll have to narrow down my interests and apply to a job I can move up the chain eventually.

Brag: I’ve cut down on all my workouts and not worried about it.  I’m running more miles, but do far less (if any…I’m working on that) cross training.  I’m putting my JOB first and still training through the winter.   I’m bragging because I’m still training and running outside when I can.

10000 Questions for you:

1.       Did you start a job right after college?  Did you get a masters degree?

2.       Do you know what you “want to be when you grow up”

3.       What are your PMB’s?

  1. I did start a job right after college, Basically I took the first and only job I got, and it was a trial by fire job but made me super thankful for the job I have now, which is only my 2nd big girl job. I really do like technical writing and will probably do it for quite some time- it’s a good industry to be in right now and I have a good writing style for it.

Even if I changed paths, I think I’d always write in some form, there’s something about being a writer that doesn’t change even if that’s not your career- I can’t just change the way I look at the world, through a writer’s eyes.

I love the picture of you! It’s neat to see a picture of you that’s more formal than running pictures, but I understand because I typically don’t dress up and take photos too much either.

  2. I’m a year and half out of college and it’s been a bumpy road since I graduated. I was in graduate school for awhile and working at my old university…but I quickly realized that I was not happy at all. I was trying to hang on to my old life by staying at my undergrad and it just wasn’t working.

Not to mention, grad school is expensive, and I wasn’t getting any tuition help. I’ve contemplated going back to school someday but for now, I like working. My job now kind of sucks but that’s because I’m temping and doing it solely for money. I never thought I’d struggle as much as I have to find a career path! I still don’t know. But I feel like it’s more the norm these days to not know. We have so many options that sometimes it is hard to choose (if you’re indecisive like I am…).

  3. After I got my degree, I worked for a year at a non-profit. I loved it, but it got shut down, unfortunately. I am pursuing my Masters right now, but it’s more of a “I don’t know what I want to do with my life, so I’ll just go back to school” thing. More education doesn’t hurt, right? And I still have absolutely no idea what I want to do afterwards.

  4. LOVE the picture! I’ve said this a thousand times on twitter but it’s so true! Did you start a different job than the one you were doing before you left for break or is it the same one? Either way, good for you!!

  5. Hollie, I’m in the same boat as you in terms of your job status. I’m struggling a little because I thought my internship (and what it entails) would end up being my career, but I’m not digging it so far. I kind of saw this coming, though–I’ve never seen myself working in an office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the next 40 years. Before graduation, I actually talked to one of my professors about my aversion to the corporate world, and she said she could totally see me going to grad school and becoming a professor, and honestly, that’s sounding more appealing every day. I don’t want to go back to school *just* yet, though–maybe in three years. We’ll see.

  6. I love all of these and you look great! I started a job right out of college that was in sales to pay the bills, I started looking for a new one right away! I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do besides get rich quick and retire early, I had zero plans of being a government contractor that is for sure! My one word of advice… If you aren’t happy speak up or start looking for a new job. Have a job you hate sucks and you worked hard for your degree!!!

  7. that picture is beautiful and so are the other ones you have shared on instagram. I do not know what I want to be when I grow up, I am in my second job post graduation. I took time off to travel and it was the best thing I could have done.

  8. Girlfriend, that picture is hawt! I think the best careers are those that you don’t know exactly what you want to do until you find yourself doing it! Personally I k.ow I want to work in the domestic violence field again after I finish graduate school, but I don’t know exactly what I want to do yet. Beginnings are stressful but also exciting!

  9. so much I want to say to this, your picture is gorgeous beyond belief. what are these for? I feel you on I have entered the real world but have no idea what I want to do. I am back to applying for jobs and I still feel lost. ugh, why can’t we just have all the answers? I am so proud of your workouts, you seriously blow my mind with how you train. I need the inner Hollie in me!

  10. I agree with you-the life after college is so stressful! I have no idea what I want to do long term. I’m leaning towards going back to become a RD and get my personal trainer cert soon. Which is a far cry from my degree in Legal Studies that I have now…

I just like to remember we’re young and have our entire professional career in front of us. No need to rush-instead enjoy figuring things out slowly. :)

What is your job that you’re doing now?

  11. Ahh i wish i knew what i wanted to be when i grew up (says the girl 2.5 years out of undergrad). I got a job right out of school but would love to go back to grad school at some point…for what i have no idea since i have too many interests and love to learn…hopefully some day

  12. My parents cut me off after college. I got my MBA and it left me with a lot of student loan debt and 5 years later a career I am still not that interested in. It’s unfortunate. I still do not know what I want to be when I grow up (I’m 27). I do know that a career change would require going back to school, and more loans, which I cannot afford. So I am stuck for now. When I started my career I did enjoy it but I changed as I got older and didn’t think to change my job so I sort of screwed myself!!

  13. Still in college…still have to (hopefully) get an internship before I start my career! haha. From what I have heard, it is pretty normal to not know exactly what you want to do right out of college. Heck, my mom got a psychology degree and ended up working in the hotel business…haha.

PS. The model-esque pictures are stunning. The one when you are walking all I could think was banging bod. haha

  14. Ugh, the career thing – bane of my existence for sure. I’ve been out of school for a little over a year now and I’m still trying to figure out what it is that I want to do. The problem is that I keep changing my mind, or finding something wrong with everything, but I know that I’m going to have to just commit to something eventually, because this floating around is driving me crazy. I was thinking about going back to school to get my master’s, and an all honesty that’s kind of the direction that I’m headed, but it’s still not something that I’m 100% sure about.

  15. First, I’m 4 years out of college and currently in grad school and STILL don’t know what I really want to do with my life. That will sort itself out, so don’t worry too much. Just keep doing what makes you happy. Second, I know it can be really hard to cut back on the workouts to put other things first, so that’s awesome that you are doing that (and still managing to get your miles in) and being mentally okay with it. Awesome job!

  16. I got my master’s degree and still don’t necessarily know what I want to do. I’m finding that knowing what your passion is and making it into a career is not as common as I was brought up to believe.

The not relying on parents thing is also really scary. It took me about 6 months to start to feel comfortable about how I spent my money. It’s a long process (and I’m still going through it) but eventually it will start to feel really rewarding!

  17. First jobs and the real world is scary! I remember my first month of work being SO worried about doing something wrong! It took me about 1 year to finally feel comfortable in my real world position, and I still ask questions!

I loved your photos. You should be America’s Next Top Model. That could be your career choice! ;)

  18. So I talk about how much I just want to get out of school and into my life career but you are right and I know how scared I will be when it happens. And it will be scary to think that it probably won’t be where I stay. I know you are doing your best and rocking your new job. It is so great to know someone who is so passionate about training and working out but you realize that work comes first. You go girl! You are rocking life!

  19. I started working THREE jobs right after college, haha. It took a year to find that full-time real-world job business, and in the meantime? There was suddenly a life to support! It’s a big jump, but totally worth it! I bet you’re going to rock in the new place, welcome to the adult world ;D

  20. oi understood. I have been out a year now and still just don’t know…i’ve had 3 jobs at one time..only one being in the field i really want. it is still a confusing time. grad school may be in my future but I’m not sure! BLAH. :(

  21. I started a job right away after college. It was in my field but it was certainly not something I wanted to do forever. I stuck it our for a year (for the resume sake) and then moved on. Being young, we have the freedom to try a few things and discover what we want to do! It’s stressful but refreshing!

  22. aaah Hollie that photo of you is GORGEOUS!!! I’ve loved stalking your beautiful modelesque photos on your instagram!!

I used to want to be a pop star when I grew up, and shh don’t tell anyone but that’s still the dream ;)

I hope your job is going well and have a fab weekend!! <3

P.S. I love your posts and especially your PMB ones!!

  23. I feel like it’s perfectly normal to not know wat we “were made to do” right out of school.
I began working right out of college. I know I am in the right field but as to exactly what function, all I can do is work my hardest in my current job and trust that, that will lead me to the perfect function within my company!

  24. I have my first job after college and am hoping it’s my foot in the door to be able to move up within the company. I’m still at home so I don’t feel a lot of pressure to provide for myself. Super thankful my parents are letting me pay off my student loans before making me leave the nest.

  25. On the other hand, you’re so lucky to have SO MANY OPTIONS that sound appealing to you!! A lot of people graduate from college with nothing that sounds right – that’s kinda what happened to me, when I graduated in 2011. It wasn’t til I got to CTS that I figured out what I really wanted to do and I’m gonna have to go back to grad school for it, so no starting a career yet for me! Also, I love love LOVE the prints from the photoshoot you did – you seriously look AMAZING. are you thinking of modeling at all?

  26. So I was going to school for like 5 years for a certain profession, and just changed it to something a little different, but in the same field. I swear at times I never know what I am going to be when I grow up, but I slowly try to figure it out haha.

  27. Choosing the right career is SUCH a huge and tough decision. I’m only 24 and I’ve already switched jobs a couple of times and switched my original career path (from engineering which is what I studied in college). While I don’t think that where I work now will be where I ultimately end up, I’m starting to enjoy it and feel like I’m on the right path towards whatever. Don’t stress too much about it and realize that it’s never too late to change career paths or try new jobs (within the same path). The world is yours!

  28. As you know I am not working right now and back in school. I see many of my friends getting jobs, moving away from home, living in the city and just living so very differently then I currently am. I also do not plan on changing this anytime soon, well at least for another 1.5 years, as that is how much time I have left in school. I know it’s what I need to do right now, but I am just ANXIOUS all.of.the.time on how I feel about this… what I could be missing out on, if this is really what I want to do, am I capable? Goodness sorry to make this all about ME here, your words just got me thinking woman

  29. I actually got my current job before I graduated from college (Bachelors degree) and this is now my sixth year there. I got my Masters part-time while working full-time, perks of working at a college, and it took me three years.

I didn’t know that I wanted to be a sign language interpreter, I actually went to school for computer science and then quickly changed. Funny though, when I was in Kindergarten I said that I wanted to be either an artist or a runner, guess I got one part right!
