It’s how I feel with the weather in NY right now. I am typing this as we are having a warm front but it’s dumping snow…
| Sunday: | 50 crunches | 14.65 mile run untimed, very easy. (maybe 9 minute or so pace?) |
| Monday: | 50 crunches | 11 mile progressive run (8:30 pace to a final mile of 6:21) |
| Tuesday: | 50 crunches | 10 miles easy in my favorite park in Syracuse, NY |
| Wednesday: | P90X | 4.7 mile treadmill run |
| Thursday: | P90x | 10.73 Treadmill Run (8:23 pace) |
| Friday: | Nike training App (for iphone) | 10.75 Treadmill Run (8:22 pace) |
| Saturday: | 50 crunches (my abs were tired this week!) | 15.4 Long Run at a park (outdoors) 8:30 pace |
| Total: | My #corewhore challenge has started to actually take off | 78 miles |
This was another high easy mileage week for me. My only goal is to come out of winter being injury free. I wanted to take a second and talk about my “love” for running on the treadmill. Look at this weather in the next week (not including wind chill…so it will be colder):
Don’t ask why I would rather run on the treadmill.
My only goal for winter is to maintain my base as much as possible. I hate running on the treadmill, but it is better than not running. Plus, in all honesty I don’t have cable at my new apartment so I’m able to watch TV while I run and get my dailyfix of trash. What I personally do is run for 90 minutes. I don’t run for a certain amount of miles (because then I find myself trying to push the pace the last half trying to get them done). I’m doing to be running on the treadmill for 90 minutes whether I run 9.456765…or 11…I plan to write a blog about this soon.
About my corewhore challenge: I have been getting my core workouts in the morning before work. (thus actually putting a bit of effort into them). The problem for me was that I was waiting until 9pm and I was tired from the day. Now that I get it over with in the morning it’s one less thing to think about.
So if you just want to know how my training is going…I’ll tell you it’s going well and I have no complaints. It was a good week of running for me. I don’t have ANY plans of racing anytime right now but who knows.
Questions for you:
Favorite workout of the week?
Do you like working out in the cold?

Look at those temps.–know ‘em all too well! I absolutely hate running on the treadmill, but given the current tundra situation, hitting the ‘mill is better than zero running at all, like you said. When I was home for the holidays, I refused to go on the treadmill, and my runs outside weren’t very productive; they probably fell in the “junk miles” territory because I was running very slowly (for me). You should write a post about P90X!
I totally start running faster on the treadmill if I have a certain mileage goal just to get it over. Although I can only run a few miles at this point so its not really the same…still, you are smart to give yourself the time goal. Treadmill stinks for sure, but it is better than no running and better than freezing/falling!
Your mileage is insane! In a good way. That’s actually such a good point with the 90 minutes versus mileage. That’s why I don’t wear my garmin when I run. I end up trying to push it so I can get it over with and it makes it so much less enjoyable. If I get stuck on the dreadmill this winter, maybe I’ll try that strategy instead. Also, I REALLY like that you don’t push the pace. It just goes to show that you don’t have to train fast to race fast. A lot of people could take a lesson or two from you.
I’m currently in the process of unfollowing quite a few blogs that irk me of how they train. It’s none of my concern if they want to run fast but you cannot train fast all the time and expect to run fast in races. My training runs are 2 minutes per mile slower AT LEAST then my races…
Favorite run this week… the long one on monday…
and yes – I like working out in the cold. Just those snowy – slushy – icy conditions are not my favs… well I am not injury prone… so there you go…
I am injury prone sadly. The ice is what ruins my running (more then cold). Cold is all about layering up but ice makes running much more difficult.
hi holli ( i suspect
) correct me if i’m wrong and don’t mind the lower case… i am just the lazy type…
totally agree that running on ice is difficult, if not to say dangerous… however cool is that we are out there… so running on ice might not bring the fastest times… but – who cares… that is my motto…
hollie
I’m exactly the same way. I have absolutely no problems slowing down the pace to run outdoors. I would rather run outdoors it’s not icy but I won’t risk it when I fell and broke my arm last year walking into the gym (not even running on ice…just walking from my car into the gym LOL). About 90% if my runs are actually easy.
breaking your arm while on the way to the gym… wow how unreal is that, hope you recovered from that…
personally speaking – runnning slowly is not my thing, however when the road conditions aren’t up for it – i like to slow down… and you know what they say about slow running – it consumes more calories… not that you would have the need for it…
I love winter running — snow, cold, you name it. But there’s really only so much I can take. haha. Soooo I’m “treating” myself to some warm treadmill runs this week. The high most days is going to be -5 to -10F BEFORE the wind (yeah, I know), and with the rain we’re getting today that means ice. Ice + frigid temps? No thanks. I’d much prefer to make it through this week uninjured.
That being said, if I am going to be hitting the TM, my paces are going to come wayyyy down. It’s all well and good when you’re outside and stopping for lights, traffic, what have you, but if I’m going to go-go-go, it’ll have to come down. My 17 miler yesterday was SO MUCH FUN. And it was at my slowest pace in forever. I felt like I didn’t have a care in the world and it was AWESOME. Getting ready for a 20 miler this weekend (eek!), so those easy miles through the week will be key.
As always, fab training, great advice, and great inspiration.
Exactly. Why would I want to get wind burn on my face. Have some great treadmill runs.
If i lived where you do I would run on the treadmill too! I don’t like it but living in SC I actually love winter running because it’s the perfect temperature for it. The race yesterday was in the 40s and great. Lots of us ran in shorts (myself included) and short sleeves (I did wear long sleeves… probably should’ve worn short sleeves though). But it’s different here, summer is almost unbearable sometimes. Glad you got your training in and I agree on doing the core in the mornings, that way it’s done and you can feel accomplished all day.
It’s terrible Amy…I live in Southern VA (during college years) in the summer where it was 100 degrees and now upstate NY in the spring/fall/winter where it can be negatives. LOL, maybe I should reverse that. I’m glad you had such an awesome race yesterday!
I hate running in the cold, but I would rather run in cooler weather than hot weather. I have an easier time breathing in the cool air.
Cold weather definitely makes going outside less enjoyable. I’m dealing with that myself today. It’s -2*F and feels like -18*F right now. Highly unlikely that I will go outside unless it is unavoidable.
Ugh, the temps here are even worse – we’ve had the same temperatures as the end of your week for 10 days now, and they’re set to drop further next week
I don’t give a damn about the cold (I have so much built-in blubber…I mean insulation, that I’m still running in shorts) but I hate, hate, HATE the snow and ice. I’m trying to mix up TM workouts with outside stuff and 90 minutes is my absolute tolerance limit as well. Actually, I’m just about crying with boredom after an hour to be honest.
I don’t know how the snow doesn’t torch everyone else’s pace :/ Trouble is that it keeps melting and refreezing here and it’s not compacted, so it’s more like running on either the surface of the moon or sand. It’s doing my head in.
xxx
As I said in twitter yesterday, I really thought I was the only one that happened too. My paces add at least another minute or so. I don’t have a single problem with it though.
Just I am amazed. The treadmill is death to me, a big bag of it. The fact you ran double digits on it blows my freaking mind. that is dedication girl. More power to you
Wow, I’m impressed by how much you did this week and how many miles you ran! It’s super cold here too ( though those temps in your screenshot are even worse than here!), and I can’t stand working out in the cold.
I will not work out in the cold. I’ll run on the treadmill all day before running outside in that cold.
I just found your blog via Run with Kate! I, too, hate the treadmill, but sometimes needs must…as I type there is about 3 inches of snow on the ground with more falling. I would run outside, but I would end up being the dumbass who falls over and breaks her ankle! So, until it melts, I guess I’m running on the treadmill
. My favourite workout this week has got to be the early morning Spinning class (6:15am!!!) I dragged my ass out of bed to go to. Disco lights and music pumping at 6 in the morning is a fantastic way to wake up!
I’m loving what I’ve read so far on your blog! I like people who are just honest and sarcasm is part of my daily life (I live in England and I think most people eat it for breakfast here)!
I actually tripped and fell last year and broke my arm on the ice (part of the reason I run inside!). I used to live in England, where did you live?
I love to get up early and run…I just wish the weather would allow that. It would take me longer to scrape my car, and go to the gym then actally work out. LOL
All I can say is – BEAST!! Love what you said about just running for 90 minutes to zone out. I hate to admit it but I am a huge whimp when it comes to the treadmill. I just can’t mentally zone out.
Have you watched trashy tv while on the tread? It’s real easy to zone out or get sucked in that way. LOL
Love that idea about going for time rather than pace – great way to not get injured on the TM for sure! I definitely admire your mental stamina….I always say that there’s no weather I wouldn’t run in, but then I’ve never lived anywhere colder than 20 above in the winter so I’ve never NEEDED the TM….so if I lived in the arctic tundra like you do I guess I’d have to eat my words!
I agree. I absolutely detest the treadmill but its really my only option right now with the weather.
I love that you are OK with the treadmill. It really shows your love of running girl! I also am happy to hear you say you do time rather than miles so you stay healthy! I used to do my abs at night and I ran into the same issue of being tired and wimping out or not putting in real effort. I actually love how abs wake me up in the mornings! How do you like P90X?
I really like p90x actually. I splurged on the 80 doller program and while I don’t use the DVD’s that often I found it was so motivating for strength training. When I went into the gym, I was like a chicken with their head cut off. I had no idea what to do…but with the DVD’s it’s all in your house and he is showing you EXACTLY what to do and how (therefore no room for mistakes). (Do I sound like an infomericial or what…but I really do love it!).
Fuck snow. That’s all I have to say.
You’re starting the bikini body early!!! Woo for abs!
I need to adopt that core in the morning philosophy. I do all of my exercise in the morning….except core which I always put off until later. If I can’t motivate myself to run in evening why do I think I’ll motivate myself to do core in the evening?
Amen to the treadmill. I used to be anti-treadmill. Then I moved to a town where it’s not safe to run outside along in the dark, which is the only time I can. Needless to say, I’m all about it now!
Pretty sure we have the same thought philosophy LOL.
Look at you dominating your core challenge!!! BEAST
I won’t go anywhere remotely close to a snowflake in running shoes. I HATE cold weather running! It’s uncomfortable and I get sinus headaches, so really I’d much rather just head to the gym. Although I think about 40 minutes is about my max for the treadmill – 90 minutes at a time is impressive!
And corewhore? You definitely win for most creative workout tag, I love it. :-p
I thought it sounded funny. My New Year’s reslution was to do some sort of core training every day of the year…whether it’s five minutes or an hour and I don’t know why core whore popped into my head…I don’t know a lot of things though LOL
Your mileage is so good. This might sound like a totally sappy thing to say but you inspire me! I’m so worried about extending my runs but I know I just need to SLOW DOWN and not try and run too fast and it’s comforting to see that’s exactly what you do. I need to enjoy the long runs and take it easy. I totally understand what you mean about running for a certain time. I should probably do that more than just running a set number of miles.
Awe thanks Anna that means a lot. Ot’s true though-when I started running easy most of the time I felt less tired and able to extend my runs a lot.
Haha, I like that treadmill time is tv time for you! I truly hate running on the treadmill and I am going to avoid it at all costs this winter (although one of our friends asked us to run with her and her boyfriend at their gym on Thursday, I owe her for running outside with me at night haha). I don’t mind running in the cold, just as long as it’s not TOO cold!
The problem with Oswego isn’t the cold, it’s so darn windy that it kills me everytime. I could run in zero degrees if it wasn’t windy…well okay maybe 10 degrees LOL.
Ouch, the temperature literally dropped 30 degrees overnight here too. It’s brutal! Helloooo winter! Although we have no snow around these parts and it’s annoying…I want SNOW.
Nice work with the miles. When I was in NY over Christmas I managed to get out in 24 degrees (pre wind chill) but that was it. I felt like I was going to die. I am with you on defaulting to the treadmill over not running. Nice work.
-4!!!!! Im frozen just thinking about it haha
