Not Being a Pain While Eating and Traveling

As some of you (may or may not) know-I’ve been traveling a lot lately.  In this last month between coming home, going to races and visiting friends, I’ve literally been gone every weekend.  Meaning eating on the road and eating out…all the time.  Which is hard enough but having special (high protein and fat diet requests?) Pain the butt.

I try and be flexible though because all my travels have been worth it and so what if I get 100 grams of protein versus 102…who cares…no big deal.  Flexible is key.  Also-I tend to have a lot of coffee (meaning a lot of cream with a splash of coffee…when I travel).  I don’t really care about the either.

It’s not real coffee unless you take a photo with it.

Most hotels (that serve) have eggs for breakfast.  If not-they have cereal…if not they have peanut butter and if that all fails they should have milk (if a hotel doesn’t have milk for breakfast…I’m just not eating there).  When at a hotel breakfast I look for eggs, yogurt, cheese, milk, peanut butter…anything higher in protein.  It won’t be a peanut flour protein pancake but it happens.  You have to think to yourself, should I not travel because my diet will be messed up.  Will I really care in a week if I had that muffin for breakfast…no, no I won’t even remember what I had for breakfast.

Really.

I normally pack a ton of snacks too.  Those can come in handy for breakfast (if there is absolutely nothing you want…but honestly I can find things at Mcdonalds…I’ve had their oatmeal and added protein powder before).  It’s delicious and filling.  I’m not one to be a pain in the butt when traveling so I just roll with the punches.

Lunch and dinner are normally similar situations.  Hotels don’t offer lunch or dinner, so I’m normally eating these things at a restaurant (fast food or not).  I stick with things I know.  It’s easier for me to find lunch I care for (because I go out to eat on the regular when I’m home).  I love having salads with salmon, feta cheese and balsamic.  If I can find one at whatever restaurant I’m at…that’s what I’m getting.  Every time.

Dinner is the same..unless I’ve had a salad…then I try and mix things up to be different.  I don’t really care though-I could have the same meal every single meal…please feel free to judge me.

hey this salad is from Dennys and it was good.

Salmon and yams while on the road. So good!

So in short, foods I pack on vacations:

  1. Plenty of bars
  2. Protein powder
  3. Peanut butter

That’s all I really need to be productive.

Foods I normally gravitate towards:

  1. Gas station coffee (I guess this counts a drink)
  2. Eggs
  3. Salads with balsamic

Finally, I never really limit myself.  Though I’m traveling, I do think-hey I am on vacation, so what if everything isn’t exactly to plan.  It is okay.

Question for you:  How do you eat while traveling?

  1. We travel often and my favorite thing is WaWa. I get the turkey sub with tons of veggies and then they always have carrots/yogurt/bananas in the produce area. I love it!! We were always getting fast food for convienance before but now never again….well maybe sometimes ;)

  2. I agree, I eat whatever. Trying to be ‘healthy’ should never stop you from doing anything that you’d like to do. The whole point of being healthy is so that you don’t have the restrictions of sickness holding you back. If being healthy has restrictions, then there’s no point!

  3. I love some gas station coffee too. Actually, I have to go out later so I may get myself a cup! And you’re totally right, you can find healthy options anywhere if you have to, even fast food. You just have to use common sense and watch what you get with condiments, etc.

  4. I totally agree. I usually eat what I want within reason on vacation. I know that our vacations are more activity heavy than my normal 9-5 sit at my desk work week, so I give in a little :)

  5. I usually bring protein powder, nut butter, protein bars & glutenfree oatmeal.
I prefer making my own breakfast because I can’t eat gluten/dairy/soy/eggs/sugar – BUT lunch and dinner are usually fine – just give me a big piece of meat or fish and some veggies and i’m good (and some GF carbs if i’m lucky :) )
    That salmon looks SO good!

  6. I have been traveling so much and eating graduation party and restaurant food like it’s my job. I’m trying to just enjoy the traveling rather than focusing on eating. I know I’ve totally been overdoing it though to the extreme.

  7. When I’m traveling, I eat a lot of greek yogurt and instant oatmeal. Since I have things I just can’t eat because of allergies/intolerances, I just tend to bring all of my necessary food.. If that means oatmeal for 3 meals, then so be it! You have awesome travel eats though.. Salmon and yams look heavenly.

  8. I laughed at the picture caption “hey this is from Denny’s and it was good” haha. When I travel I just roll with the punches as well :)

  9. I find that when I travel I tend to let what I eat go downhill. AKA I think I can eat/drink/FEAST on whatever my little heart desires :)

  10. I probably eat very little when I travel because I never bring enough for my hunger. But in high school I hated traveling for the reason of not having what I liked to eat when I wanted it. Now look at me. I’m in Japan and Greek yogurt if four bucks for four mini Oikos.

  11. This is a great post! I sometimes feel like a pain when I’m traveling with my friends and family because I like to eat healthy and sometimes everyone would rather just stop somewhere quick for a burger, so I try to be flexible and creative.

  12. I like the challenge of finding healthy on the road!
I pack a lot of cut up fruits, veggies, oatmeal packets, bars, and nuts. I usually get a sandwich or wrap for lunch, and a huge salad with protein for dinner…then ice cream :)
yay for traveling, so much fun!
I used to think that gas station coffee is so fun because of all the flavors, but I’ve lost my liking for them (years of traveling to swim meets, burnt me out!) so I seek out Starbucks/little coffee shops for a dark bold brew<–lame on me I know!
ROAD TRIP to California?!…I've been looking at flights to Virginia, I need to get out there late summer and visit my Gram, I will keep you updated!
    xoxo!
