**Warning: This is a documentary about eating disorders. Sorry if my post title is a bit point blank-but I don’t want anyone who this would make uncomfortable to read/watch ot.
After opening my blog reader sometime last week and opening Health Craved blog post link to this video…I thought…well I think I’ll watch it.
As some of you know, I’m doing my senior project on anorexia nervosa. I’ve been watching vdeos, doing extensive research, and writing a 50 page paper. It isn’t the most glamorous topic (as some of my classmates are doing theirs on gum disease or heart disease…) but it is a topic that interests me.
*I have never been diagnosed with an eating disorder. It is a topic that interests me because 80% (and this is estimated low) of females show a determinant of disordered eating as a means to control their weight.
Interesting points that came from this video. It followed several females who suffered from eating disorders from bulimia to anorexia to eating disorders with athletics (What I found the most interesting). If you have a few minutes (or 50) and this is something that interests you-I’d watch it. It is by far one of the most interesting videos I’ve watched on eating disorders, especially since the focus is with athletics.
I watched this after seeing it on her blog. From someone who has suffered from anorexia, I thought it really did a great job at addressing issues beyond that of just eating. It really showed the self esteem and mental trials that go on behind the underweight or overweight or normal sized female. It wasn’t too much of a detailed documentary at all but did hit some great points.
I agree-I enjoy how it hit all the major points without being a 6 hour documentary!
thank you for sharing this! I think it is a topic that shouldn’t be kept quiet. HOpe your paper is going well!
Awesome, I’m going to check it out. I’ve been doing an internship with a RD that specializes in eating disorders, and I find it SO interesting. We had a big talk today about how it’s a huge battle with insurance companies to get nutrition coverage (more than 3 appts) for eating disorders. Someone with an eating disorder needs months of treatment, not just 3 weeks. Some won’t pay for a weekly visit to a RD but gladly cover residential treatment (which costs $800+ a day) for 20-30 days. Are you doing your internship in the fall on anorexia or eating disorders?
Actually no, my internship will be working on a college campus (not mine) in downstate NY. Well (central). I’ll be doing a lot of overall program planning with wellness. Two of my classes (epidemiology and program planning) were doing studies on eating disorders and specifically anorexia. I’m going to have a total of about 60 pages of writing on the topic combined.
It baffles my mind about what insurance will/won’t cover. It’s quite similar for drug abusers too which is just as expensive.
Gosh, I think it was a Runner’s World early this spring that talked about disordered eating and how athletes suffer from it. I can say I’ve had moments of disordered eating in that you’ll think “1 extra mile, because of xyz I ate”. I had never associated myself with that until reading that article. Just a thought. Random, I know. Great blog post, by the way.
I didn’t know you were doing your senior project on this, so I’m so glad you found it helpful!
I ran xc in college. I too developed an eating disorder. I thought the skinnier= faster…SO NOT TRUE. I’ve also suffered from bulemia too. I can’t say that xc triggered it, or just college, or what. I do know that NOTHING was done for me. My coach never helped me. It makes me soooo mad now. Im sure soooo many other girls are suffereing and their coach doesn’t acknowledge it.
I too suffered (at times still struggle) with an eating disorder in college while I ran xc. I thought faster=skinnier. SO NOT TRUE. The bad part is my coach never did anything to help. Its like it didn’t exist. I know he noticed it, but he didn’t have the “guts” to bring it up. I think many more coaches are like mine. I think it should be required to coaches to take training in ed and how to help.
Thanks for sharing this video! I love documentaries about things that interest me, soo this is great!
I enjoyed reading this but don’t know if I’ll watch the video, although I probably will. Thank you for sharing.
And um, gum disease is not “cool” lol… at all
Senior year of high school I did a documentary myself on eating disorders.
