WEGO: Car Accident

WEGO: Third person post. Write about a memory you have but describe it using the third person.

I’m going to write about a serious car situation I got into Junior year of high school.  Quite possibly the scariest thing of my life.

—————–

The rain fell.  Pouring and flooding the streets of Southern Virginia.  Though it was a typical Spring day and not unusual because rain fell most days of the week.  Though this storm was a bit worse than others.  Many puddles already lined the roads of the highway, just waiting to flood the entire road.

The doctor’s office was awaiting my arrival.  Just a standard dermatology appointment to make sure one of my many moles was not cancerous.  (Better safe than sorry).  Leaving before fourth period was the greatest.  A note written for dismissal and missing lunch, meant stopping at chick Fila on the way over.

Running to Lorraine (my car) in the pouring rain wasn’t particularly fun, my clothes drenched and my papers wet.  No matter, blasting the heat would take care of that.  Along with blasting the heat was blasting whatever rap music was currently on the radio.  In the era of 2007 and preNikki Minaj-some sort of Rihanna was probably playing.

Stopping at the drive through at Chickfil A and then heading to my appointment was my only agenda.  Although neither would be accomplished.

My car entered the highway acceleration ramp in the pouring rain.  A low to the ground, two door Pontiac firebird which loses traction quite easily and is easily capable of sliding and hydroplaning in pour conditions.

It only took a puddle with a foot diameter to clip my back wheel causing my tires to lock and my car to begin spinning.  All at 60 miles an hour.

It was only 10 seconds but it felt to be hours or days. It was a rollarcoaster or one of those high speed spin rides at an amusement park.  Only this was real life and there was no safety harness to keep the car from hitting anything or anyone.

As my car hydroplaned across both lanes of traffic and into oncoming traffic, spinning four complete times across the highway, I managed to avoid every car on both sides of traffic.

Plus the guard rails.

Plus the huge noise reduction walls on 264.

My car stopped within a few feet of a shiny silver mustang and a white Toyota on the other side.  Sitting there in a daze it was even hard to comprehend what had just happened.

A miracle clearly.  No accidents.  No scrapes.  No dents, bruises…nothing.

Infact, the only thing wrong was my car wasn’t starting (later to be found, when it locked the battery died so it just needed a new battery).

The tow truck came and went and life went on and the only damage was in my mind.  It took me a solid few weeks to drive again.

Question for  you:  Have you ever been in a car accident?

WEGO: Penguins are cute.

WEGO: Give your blog or health theme a mascot and chat about it.

It’s no secret that my favorite animal is a penguin.  So cute-so awkward-so lolz.  Penguins are actually the only birds that I care for.  I hate all other birds because they scare me.   I think it stemmed from running a road race back in VA when geese chased me…or maybe when turkeys ran me off the road in upstate New York.  Either way-it’s no secret that birds and I are not friends.

Anyways-why make a penguin the lolz mascot?

They are super cute (like me…duh)

They are super awkward (like me…duh)

They are health conscious like me…(who doesn’t love fish)

They hate the winter.  Did you know most like the southern hemisphere and warmer climates?  (Yes…like me)…

They are apparently chatter boxes…yeah that is def like me…

Anyways-so there.  Penguins would be the forever mascot of lolz.

Question for you: What would be your mascot?

Plattsburgh Half Recap (1:27.19)

I don’t really know where to begin-so I will start here.  I was very nervous for this race but if I wasn’t nervous that wouldn’t be fun to write about.

Beforehand with one of my XC teammates Sara

The race itself was on Sunday, but we left on Saturday afternoon so we wouldn’t have to hustle around and drive 2 hours to the race in the am.  That wouldn’t have been so fun to do in the am.

I got there 45 minutes before wearing my new favorite racing outfit.  LOLZwhoisabumblebee?

The race itself was not in my favorite running conditions.  Coming from the Shamrock half last month in warm and sunny weather to this:

35 degrees, snow on the ground and cold…well…I’m a southern girl at heart to say the least.

Honestly though, bitching about the weather wouldn’t have done anything.  Was I just not going to run because it was cold and miserable.  Uh no.

I checked my bags but was still wearing long sleeves and a sweats and couldn’t go recheck them, so I did what any sane person would do and hid them on some random persons porch about one minute before the race.  (my friends still make fun of me because after the race I was like…uh got to go get my clothes from this random persons porch) If they weren’t there when I finished…well that was gods way of telling me to stop buying so much crap (but they were).

But I tell you-the national anthem was one of the coldest minutes of my life.  With that, the race was off and I was too.

I was staring at a scary sea gull. I'm not joking. I really hate birds.

Mile 1 was downhill and with the wind and I hit it in 6:40-I was a bit worried because I knew that didn’t give me much playing room to break 1:30.

I can always pretend I'm happy by closing my eyes and peacing. duh.

Mile 2 was the uphill and into the wind.  It was a miserable mile and my second least favorite (Mile 12 was the same stretch only more windy). To be as sappy as possible, some little girl yelled high five bumblebee as I ran by (she was about 6) and I gave her a high five.  Honestly, if you are to in your “running zone” to give a little girl a high five…well then…we aren’t the same type of person.  My race was already made.

By mile 2, I had pretty much warmed up (because I didn’t before the race) and my legs fell into a trance only to be awoken by random people telling me I was currently the top female overall (but I knew number 2 wasn’t too far).  Also being woken up by some college soccer boys hitting on me at water stops and asking why I didn’t put my phone number on the bib (because my name was…men are so creative…).

My fastest mile split was a flat one (mile 8) going with the wind and I hit that in 6:05.  I hit 9 miles in 1:00.15 and trekked up the bridge hill on mile 10.  I took about half my gel at this point…which I didn’t really need but I don’t have the balls to not have a gel.  (mental>physical)

My least favorite mile is between 11-12 because you reenter the starting line and can see the finish but know that there is no way in hell that is 2 miles away and know you are going back to face the wind (and uphill) one last time.  Right after mile 12 was the nice uphill against the wind climb.  My eyes were watering, I was instacold again and yelling but I knew I was almost there.

So I continued along my journey to the finish and finished in 1:27.15 as the top female overall.

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am.  Plus I got this stunner trophy to hold more things in.  Or drink from at the bar…I can’t quite decide what.  So I guess this can be my new favorite race.

I also got a trophy to hold all my muscle milk in. So I tell myself.

Training Week (Taper?)

PrePlattsburgh (Half Marathon) Workouts:

If I didn’t say it 100 times already, today I raced my second half marathon of the year (today…Sunday).  The first was last month.  This particular race, my coach wanted me to try keeping my workouts the same until Friday and Saturday.  I tend to run the best on high mileage weeks.  So this was my taper series for this race (mostly normal runs for a while)

Monday:

4X1 Mile repeats:  The goal was between 6:00-6:15.  My average time was 6:07.  I didn’t even feel that great and was honestly a bit frustrated.   My legs felt heavy and the workout itself just made me grumpy.

Cooldown/warmup 6.7 miles easy.  Total: 10.8 m

Tuesday:

AM: 6.3 at 8:00 min pace.  I hit that goal pace perfectly.  I don’t know why

PM: 6.3 UPtempo at 7:15 pace.  This was a glorious run for me because I felt so good running it, and it just felt easy and natural.  Apparently speedy runs that aren’t quite tempo runs are called Uptempo runs…I just call them running quickly…

Wednesday: 10 miles easy

Thursday:

AM: 4.1 miles easy

PM: 6.3 tempo at 6:36 pace.  Incase I fail to mention about my tempo runs, I never have a goal really I just kind of run fast and time it.  That is the extent of my speed workouts.  They are done without garmins and they are done by still how I feel.  I don’t say 6 miles at 6:30 pace.  Way to get me nerve racked.

Friday (off…I would also like to say I ate upwards of 4000 calories today and don’t regret it).

Saturday: 8.2 Shakeout EASY

Sunday: Plattsburgh Half  (I ran this in 1:27.19…I’m happy with it and I’ll post a race recap sometime this week)

Total 65 miles

This sort of taper was somewhat nerve racking for me.  Seeing as really, though I did cut my miles, I didn’t cut until Thursday!   My coach reminded me (constantly) that that is all I really needed since my body had run so many miles prior that this was a huge deal for it.  Okay okay.   It obviously worked out well since I PRed!

Question for you:

How were your workouts this week?

Do you run with a garmin?

WEGO: Be Somebody

Things we forget are sticky notes you can purchase and place anywhere.  They are filled with great quotes that anyone could serve as a reminder for.  I didn’t even know what that these existed until I looked on the link on the list of all the WEGO’s.  So I have already learned something new (which isn’t too surprising).  I could lie to you and say that I didn’t look through all 1000+ of these…but I did.  I legit spent an hour (not wasted…I guess) looking at them all.

For the WEGO, you were supposed to create your own but I instead chose to post this one because it is my favorite life quote ever.

So go do it up.

What do you often forget?
