Factual Friday: Blogging and Controversial Food Blogging

This is one of those times I’m going to stand on a soap box so bear with me.  I won’t judge you if you choose to skip this one.

I actually had a way different post scheduled for Factual Friday but after reading THIS blog, I was completely inspired.   I was actually going to post a blog about my top ten favorite foods, but I feel this is worth being said as well. (Not that I know you probably would love hearing about my love for ketchup and Greek yogurt…)

In the blogging world, a food blog means you claim you are a  healthy eater.  And do you know what, 90% of food blogs post pictures of healthy foods.  But I can guarantee you, I don’t post to you everything I eat.  Why?  Some things are boring-how exciting can a power bar be?  They don’t even look good to begin with, no camera magically look delicious.  Some-others will look down upon…Oh you actually ate an entire piece of cake and ice cream not just a single piece of chocolate?  When I want chocolate, 1 piece of Ghirardelli will not cut it in my mind.

As you guys know, I am a two sport athlete-I run and swim.  (And yes I do get a lot of criticism that I don’t enough calories, if you want to email that to me lolzthatswim@gmail.com) but, I don’t post every single thing I eat.  It is highly unreasonable to post everything and anything that goes into my body for a single day.  Plus who cares.

I actually have two reasons.

1. My camera is not small.  I have a big Nikon D70.  I can’t even fit the lense in my pocket let alone the body of my camera.  I’m not bringing a tiny suitcase around with me to carry my camera in.

2.  Why would I bore you, if I eat the same thing every day?  I always have a snack before swim practice. I always have the same sort of snack between classes. Normally my snacks include and range from an apple, grapes, power bar, fruits, nuts, leftovers, yogurt or even more pancakes…it’s not something exotic and just takes up space in my blog.  Space I don’t need to bore you with.

I’m not going to guarantee to you that from now on I’m going to post everything that I eat.  In fact really, what do I need to guarantee?  I am going to guarantee you when I am exercising I get the adequate nutrition I need to do well.  I wouldn’t ever put my body through that much pain to not succeed.  Nutrition is something you can control and one of the easiest aspect to hence or hinder your performance.

On to my next topic.

It was made a very good point in her blog about not comparing yourself to others.  What I eat, isn’t what you eats or she eats. (Or he eats)  I doubt we all have the same exercise plan, the same circumstances, we aren’t the same height or weight.  Um hello, that is why you have a different identity.  You are a different person, with a different genetic makeup.  Unless you are my secret clone (which god knows the real world or the blogging world is not ready for at all) then please, don’t follow my eating habits.  Don’t do what I do.

It is true, I want the entire world to love pancakes and waffles so eat them!  But don’t criticize my breakfast eating.  I eat what fuels me properly and what I like.   I like to share my ideas of recipes because quite frankly, I don’t find many people who think like I do (for the better).  My odd combinations of food, may interest you.

But really-if you have anything you would like to say on a more personal level, please feel free to email me.  lolzthatswim@gmail.com.  I love and read each email that you give me.  J

But on a lighter note-Do you know what I did today?  Besides running because that obviously makes me happy.  I ran.  With someone!  Aren’t you proud?  I just posted a blog about having no friends (ha) and now I do.

Anywho-to say the least our friendship blossomed because I’m extremely creepy.  Cait has a blog as well and she actually goes to my school!  So since you will be seeing a lot of her on my blog I feel, you should go check hers out. So now that I have real friends, or she has an extremely creepy stalker.  But we went to the gym and ran-I ran 6.7, and I think she ran 7 miles, I never asked but she is an awesome runner and has too many similar interests to mine.

After we made some delicious waffles (blueberry!) and I would have taken pictures but after gym pictures are always too beautiful…  So go check out her blog.

Day 11: A picture of you with a ton of jewelry.  Well sadly the most jewelry I wear is on Halloween.  The only jewelry I normally wear are pearl earrings and my Pandora.  With swimming, it’s hard to really wear jewelry.  But here is the most I have worn all year…two necklaces, a headband and earrings.  Would you believe I didn’t have my ears pierced until a year ago?

Question for you:

1.       Do you feel the blogging world hides what they eat?  Do you post everything you eat?

  1. I only post the chocolate that I eat. And not all of it.

I’m pretty sure most people think I weigh 500 lbs based on my blog. They can piss off. And so can the people who want to be stoopid about your breakfast or you not eating enough or whatever.

  2. Love this =)

    Dana xoxo

PS i’m glad to hear that you DO eat enough! i’ve always wondered with all your exercise how you could possible get enough food lol but it makes me feel better to know how much it matter to YOU that your healthy!

  3. Hey. So I completely agree about your opinion. I dont really care how much peopel eat, as long as its enough for them. I also agree that most bloggers dont post EVERY SINGLE bite they have. That would be borrowing. I hope people arent being mean about your eating and exercise habits again….
Just remember your blog is awesome!
Im also glad you made a new running friend- happy weekend!

  4. I just came across your blog and I loved this post… I mostly post everything I eat with an exception of snacks…and usually i have more dessert than I post. I dont want to promote eating a ton of chocolate & peanut butter but thats what I like and that’s what I crave so thats what i do!
Ignore the negative comments… really, people should have better things to do. Nice to “meet” you :) Have a good weekend!

  5. It’s so important not to compare yourself to others! That’s why I only occasionally post how much I actually workout and I try to avoid talking about how many calories I eat. Some people asked for my meal plans, but since those are so person specific, I don’t give out that much detail.

And also, you’re right- do people really want to see my bag of granola and protein shake? Lol I doubt it. And you NEED that whole slice of cake- who cares if you show us- you need that fuel to thrive and be successful!

    Have an awesome weekend Hollie!

  6. Hollliiieee! I know we talked about it this topic earlier but seriously great post. It came out really well said. Plus thanks for the shout out my creepy stalker friend….I’m just thankful you didn’t show up to the fitness center in that furry costume eating couch cushions….

  7. I don’t think a lot of people realize how brave you have to be to start your own blog and put all your thoughts and emotions out for anyone to read! I have always been impressed by your courageousness to have your own blog :) You have the right to say whatever you want to say, and to post whatever you want to post (or not want to!) People that don’t like it, don’t have to read it. (I, however, LOVE reading your blog and I love this post.) I love reading blogs and getting ideas and inspirations from other people’s meals and ramblings, however I am careful not to get too caught up in them since it can be tempting to slide into judging yourself off of others or trying to fit into someone else’s lifestyle. Everyone is unique in their tastes, desires, likings, and body, therefore I think everyone needs to realize when they’re reading blogs to take everything they read with a grain of salt, and an open mind.

  8. I love this. You are soooo right- so many people try to compare what they eat/ how they exercise to other bloggers, I’m the first to admit. When I first started reading blogs I tried to mimick some people, but it just wasn’t practical & it’s just not me. It’s so much more important to do your own thing, eat what you want & exercise how & when you want!
So cool that you got to meet up with another blogger…and THEN make waffles- haha- I love it!

  9. I don’t expect to see everything someone eats because it would be boring, and I know people don’t share everything. Unless I know someone personally, I don’t feel comfortable giving nutrition advice to someone because it’s their body & food & their choice. As an athlete, I’m sure you do know how to eat right. I don’t post my food on a regular basis because I don’t carry my camera around everywhere, don’t feel like taking pictures of everything, so I only share something that’s really good or a recipe.

  10. People totally choose not to blog about certain things they eat! I don’t post everything either. I think you can tell if a blogger has issues with foods in their words, not just in their pics. I can tell you are a healthy girl with a good attitude about food and you are honest with your struggles. I don’t need you to prove it to me with detailed pics! I like to post food sometimes, but not always. Depends on what it is, if i feel like taking a pic, and other stuff. Good post Hollie!

  11. I definitely don’t post everything. I tend to eat the same cereal everyday, and I agree, it’s so boring to post the same thing over and over! And while I love the blogworld, I’m not going to change the way I eat just to make things interesting :)

  12. I feel barely anyone posts everything they eat and I don’t really post about food for this reason. We are all interested in what another person eats, but I feel like a lot of people only do it to put themselves down and compare what they eat to other people. All that happens is that a person will be left feeling inferior and will lash out at the person they are watching.

I say, keep it up, Hollie! I love your blog and I love what you eat. Cheers to being healthy!
