New Classes-New Race

Day two of my first week of classes. Today I also had two classes-educational psychology and advanced set theory and logic. Educational psychology I have heard bad things about. I know many people who have taken the class and have not passed. It is about a 50-50 ratio. The teacher is a tad “off,” but hopefully that will not be me. I’m going to have to put a lot of effort into that. Set theory and logic is interesting and it is actually the same teacher that I had last semester and also for my other class modern algebra. She is great, and I have no bad thoughts about that class-yet.

My day begins on Tuesdays at about 6:45am. My first class is at 8, which I do not really mind because I am a morning person. I did not have pancakes today. I actually made a berry smoothie. It consisted of 6 ounces of Chobani vanilla Greek yogurt, ½ cut of fiber one cereal, ½ cup of mixed berries and ½ scoop of Isopure protein. It was very delicious and filling.

11:00am-my boyfriend and I went to the dining hall. I had one piece of grilled chicken and 2 potato bites again. I also had a salad with tomatoes, banana peppers and spinach. I was still really hungry so I went back up and ordered a sandwich. The sandwich consisted of wheat bread, roast beef, American cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and peppers. It was a pretty healthy run I would say.

Insert swimming laps in the freezing cold pool. My college pool was so cold today. They turn the heat off during the summer time so it comes back at about 70 degrees. That is unreasonable but it isn’t like I can do too much about it ha.

3:00pm I had a prerace snack of the protein and fiber one. It really works well in my stomach while running. I didn’t take another photo because it looks the same as yesterday. :)

Insert my first cross country race ever. It was unofficial but it was really fun. The course had two gigantic hills which were really intense. The course was hilly and my final time was 22:15. I was 30th overall between men and woman (I think there were 2-3 girls in front of me) out of I believe 70 or 80. For my first race, I cannot complain at all. It was really fun but I cannot get over that you can hear and see people while running. With swimming your face is in the water and you cannot see how others are feeling.

7:00pm off to the dining hall. Ah-I have been eating a lot lately. I’ve been really hungry but I haven’t been working out as much this week. For dinner I had 1 baked potato, ½ cup of corn, 2 halves of a quesadilla, 5 pieces of watermelon, 3 tofu raviolis and 2 pieces of pork. Needless to say probably about 1000 calories. That puts me at about 2000 for the day.

PS: Here is the new protein I bought. I use 1/2 the serving size but Isopure vanilla is awesome. Can you argue with those stats?

First Day of Classes

Today marks the first day of classes! Yay-finally something to do. Before my food blog, I will give a quick run-through of my two classes today. I am taking Sports psychology at 10 am and Modern Algebra at 2pm. This semester is light because I was not sure what I could handle with running and swimming. I’m taking 16 credits when I normally take 19-21.

Sports Psychology is taught by my favorite professor on campus. It is going to be an awesome class and it goes into detail of things such as defining a sport, athletic performance and even the stress that is associated with certain sports. Modern Algebra was interesting. We have already gotten into proofs and logic and I can tell this will be my hardest class. It is exactly same pupils as were in my previous math course plus or minus 1 or 2 people. I guess us math majors must stick together.

Today began at 7 am. For cross country we had to do somehow manage a short two mile run. It worked out well for me because I had to pick up my car from the shop which is about 2 miles away. It actually could not have been better now that I think about it. I ran and got my car and then came back and my boyfriend was making my favorite pancakes-Sweet Potato pancakes. I made the batter last night so we had plenty of time to just relax before sports psychology. He is also taking the class.

12:00pm My lunch was earlier than normal today. I had an egg and hot dog sandwich on a bagel thin. I made an egg and hot dog sandwich. Chop the hot into thin strips and microwave with the egg, And then add to the bagel thin. I also had it dipped in salsa which adds a nice zest.

3:30pm I had a prerun snack. The pudding and fiber one snack really seems to hold me over and give me some energy. I prepare them normally on Sunday and divide them into four servings.

Insert a nice slow 30 minute jog here. We had to have a nice slow jog again which hopefully will help me do well tomorrow.
6:00pm. I went to the dining hall. I had grilled chicken and baked potato bites as they are called. I think the amount of chicken I had was a bit excessive but I was craving protein and then had about 3/4s cup of broccoli. I ate with the cross country team then my boyfriend decided he was going to come and eat too so I ended up waiting for him. I didn’t even get dessert when everyone else did. Sinless September!

Our first cross country unofficial race is tomorrow and I’m rather nervous. I hope to do well so we will how it all goes. I’ll keep you guys posted though.

Question for you-What is (was) your prerace ritual at night/in the daytime before a race?

For me-Big swim meets I always have raspberry pancakes the day before morning before the race. For instance, I would have a lot of carbs the Friday morning before a big Saturday meet. I haven’t established anything for running yet but everywhere I have read and heard, carb loading 2 nights before versus the night before is more beneficial. It is very similar to swimming I suppose.

What is your Trigger Food?

Today started at 8am today. Not my usual 6am, and it was lovely. My boyfriend asked if I wanted to go to Dunkin Donuts before our shopping excursion and of course I agreed. We went shopping to the closest mall to me at school which is 45 minutes away.
We wanted to get off the campus while everyone was moving in and I needed more protein powder. I came back with a new jar of “Isopure.” I have never tried it before but I like to change my protein powder everytime I go. I also got some fancy coffee to brew and a few house items. He, of course, was able to find clothing. I wanted to get a new sports bra and a couple pairs of jeans but it was not my lucky day. I can never find jeans that are long enough. I came back to my townhouse and the rest of my housemates had moved in. Everyone is here now so it is not as lonely. Plus they have things that I can use for more cooking ha.

12:00pm I was hungry again. Instead of buying some sort of snack at the Auntie Anne’s, I went and bought grapes at Hannahfords. I am admitting it loud and proud. Grapes are my trigger food. I ate 2.5 pounds of grapes. The entire bag. 400 calories of grapes. How I managed those in my stomach, I’m not entirely sure. Are you trigger foods necessarily bad? I understand that too much of anything is never good but I suppose that having 2.5 pounds of grapes sitting in my belly isn’t optimal either.

Grapes

1:00pm now my boyfriend was hungry, so we went to our dining hall-Lehman dining hall. I tried to balance out the amount of carbs I had with some protein and got ham and about a half cup of eggs substitute. Powdered eggs, I believe. I also had about a cup of strawberries.
I was already up to 1000 calories and it was only 1:30 bah.

Insert a nice hill interval workout with my boyfriend on the elliptical today. The last thing I needed to do was run-I needed a break and my coach wanted us to take a break either today or yesterday. I chose today. We also did an intense core workout. He loves the 10 pound medicine ball.

6:00pm Eating dinner again at my dining hall. I had 3 pieces of grilled chicken, about a cup of broccoli, 1 piece of manicotti and 1 spankopita. Spankopita is more of a treat because I can only imagine how they are made.

Next week with classes and everything falling into place, it will be a lot easier for me to cook and have a routine schedule. I don’t want to fall into a food routine and have the same thing every single day so I’m going to go to the dining hall a lot for dinner and make breakfast and lunch. Today I went to Dunkin Donuts to avoid those pancakes that I always seem to have.

Hersheys Cocoa Sinless Pancakes

I crave chocolate (a lot) and when I have these in the morning it really takes care of my craving for a while.

4 tablespoons of Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa
2 packets of splenda/truvia/ect
1/4 cup fiber one pancake mix
1/2 cup crushed fiber one cereal
1/4 egg substitute (1 medium sized egg)
1/8 tea spoon baking powder
(Optional 1 tub of individually sized Greek yogurt. Normally at 5.3 ounces).
(Optional-1 scoop of whey protein powder)

I first start by crushing the fiber one cereal. I personally use my magic bullet but you can also put it in a Ziploc bag and smash it up. Then add all dry ingredients. Cereal, baking powder, protein powder, cocoa, truvia, and pancake mix.

Add the liquid ingredients together separately and mix up. (Eggs, milk, yogurt).

Then add dry to wet. Add water until batter is at a pancake consistency and add to griddle.

Side notes-I add yogurt because it makes the batter much more rich and creamy. Vanilla yogurt adds a nice punch to it. I have added strawberry and raspberry which were good as well.

I add protein powder because in season I need more protein and few extra calories.

Mountain Hiking

Today was a great day. For practice today, we ran up a mountain. This is a mountain that you would normally hike up but we had to run up at a 9 minute mile pace. I was so uncertain at first but once we got up there it felt amazing. It is one of the single most proud accomplishments that I have done. The team was very supportive of each other and I really feel I became closer to them all. Here are a couple of shots from the top. The first shot is of my team which is the 4 point guarders. The top five girls score points in an event and the rest of exhibitioned. Our fifth female hurt her foot which is obviously not what we want in preseason. The second photo is of most of our team. I also just got back from a 45 minute slow jog with a teammate Kelsey. She is the one wearing yellow.

For you-What is one of your greatest (athletic or not) accomplishments?
